Guest iamjackal
I have almost enough T56 parts now sitting in my basement for probably 15 or so trannies.Only problem is that there are some T5 parts as well.I have tried countless tranny shops and dealerships but can not find a service manual for these trannies.Has anyone found a source Ive tried everywhere.I believe I will be buying the Weir Products adapter to run hydraulic throwout bearing so let me know if anyone needs anyone bellhousings or other parts. Also have a Ford T-45 for sale
Guest Jason
I have no idea where you'd find a manual for a T56 but if you were adventurous you could try reverse engineering one. Any suggestions on where I could get a used T56 cheap? -Jason
Guest Locutus
Start calling junk yards, look for the ones that specialize in camaros firebirds, and trans ams. I live in houston, I found mine for 600, BUT it did not have the bellhousing, or the splash gaurd, clutch fork, anything other than the transmission, So far I been lucky, I got everything else I need for less than 300 bucks, I think I got very lucky finding a bell housing, and the rest was buy from chevy, around a 120 for a special bolt and pivot, a bracket for the slave cylinder, the clutch fork, and the splash shield. I plan on purchasing a new slave cylinder for around 35 bucks(it helps to have family in the transmission business even if they are only soon to be inlaws). I am also planning on using the Ford master cylinder setup described in here, I will probably have about another hundred bucks of stuff to buy. So in all I figure I will have paid about 1000 for my tranny. MAKE SURE you can get the whole thing it will be easier in the long run. I think I got very lucky finding the bell housing, if I had to buy it from Chevy it would have been 300 bucks. Also if you find a junk yard that is hooked up to lots of others ask them to put what you are looking for out on the line, it is possible someone will have it. When you do find it pull numbers call chevy, make sure you are getting what they say you are. You want a 6 speed manual transmission from a 94-97 camaro trans am or firebird. Most of those guys won't know what T-56 is, infact even the guys at the chevy dealer didn't know what that was. Thier computers are based on the car and the year. Hope this helps Mike
Guest iamjackal
if you get in the same situation then Ive got all sorts of bellhousings and other spare parts. How are you guys doing your speedometers though.I read that the Viper tailstock has mechanical gear drive all ready there but I have a bunch of those and see nothing but an electrical conector
BLKMGK
I'm going to use the Autometer 5 inch speedo - electrical - with the stock sender. I'll match it up with the 5inch Monster tach too. At this point I'm waiting to see if they get the Luma series in production otherwise I'm using the Ultra Lites. I liek th elooks of the Phantom series but the tach features I want come in Ultra and I like it. They'll make custom guages but I'm not sure I want to go that route (shrug). What's this about a Ford master? I've ordered a Tilton 7/8ths master for mine from Pegasus. I also spoke to a guy who claims to have done several swaps and he says to use the 1 inch master (sigh). I'm sticking with Mike on this one
pparaska
Iamjackal: Check out the Sept 2000 issue of GM High Tech Performance magazine. It's kind of hard to find, but they go through a T-56 rebuild with D&D Performance in Wixom, Michigan. D&D offers a synchro rebuild kit ($250), and notably, a manual for $20 if you buy parts from them. Guest Jason
Is there a difference between 94-97 models and a 6 speed from a 1998 Camaro? Perhaps the bellhousing would be different? Or maybe JTR should update their page on the T-56?
Guest Locutus
I believe the 97 has a different bell housing as well. It has the bell housing for the new style engine with one bolt up top istead of 2 like tradition small blocks of the past have always had. I don't know much about the newer chevy engines, I think this is the LT4 engine? but either way, the 97 came with a different bell housing. pparaska
Just remember that if it came with an LS1, it has a different bellhousing that won't work with the earlier motors.
Guest iamjackal
Thank you so very much it was driving me nuts trying to get anything on T56s.Thanks again.
Guest Locutus
You can get a different bellhousing of course. The tranny bolts to the bellhousing the same its the engine bolt pattern that is different but that is only the 97 model I know for sure
