Guest Fast Frog
I'm planning a new ZV8 project with a 700R4 tranny. 350 cid with 350-400HP. I want this new setup to be able to clock out between 6000-6500rpm in 4th gear. I'm planning to install a Crane "631" HR cam with valve float at 7000rpm. Is a good 700R4 in OD 4th gear capable of that rpm range???
John Scott
Thats 194 mph @ 6500 with a 3.54! That might take more than 400 ponies(?). Only had mine up to 5600rpm. Scarey! What are the top speeds of the Auto corvettes? You might pose the question to one of the 700 specialists like Carl Rossler transmissions. Guest Fast Frog
Thx John! What is the OD 4th gear ratio?? About .70 ?? I'm really only looking for 150 +/-mph!!
John Scott
3.06, 1.62, 1.00, .70. .....if my math is correct, 150 mph would take only 5000 rpm with 3.54s. (what gears are you planning on running?) You'll be shifting out of third 6500rpm @ 136 mph. ( a little less accounting for slippage. None when locked up in fourth) JS
Guest Fast Frog
Thx, again, John!! I,m going to be running 3.54 RE. Anything numerically higher and 1st gear is useless. Anything lower and 4th is a dog (I would guess). By the way, does your 700R4 that I'm interested in come with a bell hsg??
John Scott
Fast Frog, You've been a hard core standard trans man for ever, haven't you? The autos are all in one piece, i.e. case, bellhousing cast in one. The first gear ratio in the 700 with 3.54s is like running a 4.30 rear with a turbo 400. Its a short trip to 2nd. If a 5.0 mustang can go 150mph, less hp higher weight, and assuming you have the aerodynamics to try it, it should be easy. JS
Guest Fast Frog
Yo John: Oh yeah, I'm a stick man but this new venture is also for the wifely babe!! I believe with the right shifter one can be as good or better than a stick (Hey, don't lynch me yet!! I said the wifely babe would be driving it once in awhile!!). I take her stock 78 automatic up some of these hills in W. Colo (Grand Mesa & Col Nat Mon)and it performs as good as my beast cept my right arm isn't falling off when I'm done. What's a good shifter??? I've been considering the B&M "Hammer" Remember, this isn't for comp or a lot of dragging. Remember, women are involved!!! (hope this stirs up some feminine blood!!!!!) John Scott
Go with a ratched one for sure. The 700's detents are small and easy to overshoot with the cheapie shifters...like I have. Nothin' wrong with autos. Some prefer them. I raced them for years in my 442 Olds. Hard to beat the consistancy. I'll always have one in my 24k/year truck. Modern Motorsports Ltd
I just finally got my Hammer installed after using an OE 280ZX w/ my 700 for over 4 yrs. I love my hammer and wish I had it years ago. It's the pricier version of the Megashifter as I recall but my wife got it for me last Xmas (or I'd of bought the Mega). works great, my exhaust ended up pretty close to my shifter cable though beside my tranny pan...
