J Taylor
My 280 keeps breaking the 280zx na trannies so I want to get at least get a t5 in it. Anyone know how much I need to have a driveshaft shortened to make it work? Anyone have any kind of aftermarket tranny in their Z? T56, tremec, etc, etc, etc. I need something that's going to stand up to some abuse and alot of power. Thanks alot. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. Guest MistaFosta
Lol. Sounds like too much power.... Good job! Didnt the 280ZXTs have a t5? Still, a t-5 would get eaten alive by that motor. Cant take high horse...There is a company called Transdapt that might be able to make a conversion bellhousing, prices are reasonable from what Ive seen. Good luck
BLKMGK
A T5 built "right" shoudl be able to take the power of a turbo 6 IMO. Lot's of upgrades have been made to that trans in the years since it was last in a Z. Find yourself one that will bolt up and if you're worried about breaking it give HanlonMotorsports a call. I'm pretty sure their WEB site is http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com Bob is a good guy and races a Mustang. He uses what he sells, he ought to be able to build a T5 more than capable of handling that 6 and many V8s too!
J Taylor
Mista: Yeah, the 280zx turbo tranny will bolt right up but I just have to have a driveshaft shortened to make it work. I am in a way hesitant about doing this b/c even my old 84 turbo tore up it's t5 twice with waaaay less hp than what the 280 is putting out. BLKMGK: If was going to go through the expense and trouble of building a t5 I would much rather go through a little more throw in a tremec or something. Know what I'm saying? BLKMGK
Heh, ever shifted a Tremec? I have - I've got one in my Mustang. I still can't hit third gear reliably after driving the smooth T5 for so many years. The Tremec's tend to shift crappy, and the stock Tremec shifter is complete junk! Now, a T56 - that would be a nicer trans! But the expense would be crazy I'm afraid. Up to you obviously but a modded T5 would be the next best step up from a T5 and might not be as expensive as you think. If you've broken T5s with less HP before than a stock one is probably not going to last this time either. (shrug)
randy 77zt
has anybody tried a world class t5 on a zxt bellhousing?the mustang racers have good luck with these and you can get new units from summit.you would have to use a dikfferent clutch disc cause spline count is different. Guest Anonymous
Hey JT, see if an 87-89 turbo transmission will bolt up to a 280ZX turbo t5 bellhousing. If it fits I'd do that. Expensive and needs a custom driveshaft, but pretty hard to break it! Or you could just quit tearing the **** out of your cars and then you wouldn't break transmissions. That'd be the cheap way to go! ------------------ Morgan http://z31.com/~morgan/s30 http://carfiche.com
J Taylor
BLKMGK: Yeah, my first stang had a tremec 3550 in it and I didn't have any bitches about it other than the stock shifter that was on it. I do like how the t5 in my cobra feels alot better but I could definately get used to the tremec knowing I could shift the hell out of it without breaking it. Morgan: The input shaft would have to be changed though, right? JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. Guest Anonymous
I dunno. I bet all these nissan things have the same clutch spline(just a hunch, but who knows). If splines are wrong you can mix-n-match discs and plates to get it to fit. ACT could do that for you no sweat. The release bearing might take a few tries to get it in the right position though, but that's not a big deal. If the shaft is the same length, then you only need to worry about the pilot bushing. Worst case on that is you get a piece of bronze stock and have a custom bushing made. It's worth at least looking into. This also means that a z31 turbo t5 would fit, as would a z32 transmission(same as 87-89 turbo) and give you lots more choices and cheaper prices. ------------------ Morgan http://z31.com/~morgan/s30 http://carfiche.com
J Taylor
The dude in Auburn that basically built the car originally said I can't use a z31 tranny....input shaft is different. I think what I am going to do one more time is get another na tranny to throw in it to buy myself some time to figure out what to do about getting a tranny that will hold up. The guy I got the last tranny from said he would swap it for another since it only lasted a whole 5 days so it is only costing me labor which is no biggie. Maybe it will last longer than 5 days this time..... JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor.
