rags Posted August 30, 2008 Share Posted August 30, 2008 Guy's, I just found a new machine shop in town that wants to Extrude hone one of my P90's to see what it would do for a turbo l6. I'm very leary as I have not seen anyone here do this to a head, only manifolds. I'd like to get some opinions on wether this will be worth the dollars or should I just pass. The price wouldn't even be half of what is on the Extrudehone web site for the level 2 process (port matched before the process is done). Opinions? Calgary280ZT Posted August 30, 2008 Share Posted August 30, 2008 I believe jeffp has that done to his head. I looked at it and decided to have Rebello do a race port to my P90. As I understand it, Extrudhone doesn't actually remove material, only casting burrs(?) and such, and smooths things out. For the money, assuming you were paying full cost, I would let a competent L6 head specialist port it. I'm no expert, so take my two cents for what it's worth.... Administrators BRAAP Posted August 30, 2008 Administrators Share Posted August 30, 2008 I think the Extradhone would be a great finish process after the ports have been roughly reshaped by hand as the extrude hone process isn’t going to drastically “reshape†the ports, at least in the manner we may desire, For example, the huge step in the roof of the exhaust port reduced/shaped, widening the bowl of the exhaust port for extreme applications, entrance to the intake port raised, etc. I think the Extrude Hone would compliment a rough hand port nicely. I was able to see a few heads that had the process already completed (S2000 head and a VR6 head), neither had the combustion chamber done as it didn't look anything like the intake and exhaust runners. What I think I'm gonna do is port match the head myself and also try to smooth out some of the top of the exhaust runners and then have the extrudehone done. I'm also thinking of cutting a Singh grove in each combustion chamber as well as tapping the water jacket above 5 and 6. The way I'm looking at it is if it doesn't work, I'm only out the price of the extrudehone and a P90. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
