jacob80
Hey guys, I have the imfamous rear end "clunk" between shifts and opening and closing the throttle. Now, I know that it is the nuts on the differential rear cover coming loose, so I am wondering if it is possible to drop down the differential by removing the nuts on the end of the mustache bar and taking off the crossmember that holds up the nose of the differential. Thanks!
jt1
Yes, that's possible, but it's generally easier to unbolt the diff cover from the mustache bar and remove the diff without the mustache bar. Unless the bar has been removed recently, it normally doesn't come out without a fight. jt
jacob80
The reason I want to drop it is because I cant get an impact wrench on the nuts, which I want to do. I've also read that people put fat washers on and then tighten them down. We actually just changed the oil in it and put a new gasket on while we put on ground control coil overs. jt1
You can drop them together. Sometimes the bushings on the ends of the bar will fall off, sometimes they are are a real problem. Give it a try. jt
v8dats
i had a clunk in my rear end. checked it out and found out it was the tranny mount.removed tranny crossmember and half of the mount stayed on the tranny and the other half came off with the crossmember. good luck. its not always the diff.. jacob80
Im almost positive it is the nuts that go on the studs on the differential cover because I tightened them with a regular wrench as tight as I could and the sound went away but after a day or two it came back, so I am pretty sure its them. essdeezee
While you're under there, give the u-joints a wiggle. My first clunk came from there.
