FlatBlack
I tried to put a new head gasket in my old L28 as it had been leaking a little oil, and ended up cracking the block when I put the new head gasket in. I suppose the people who rebuilt it started the crack, and then I finished it off. Anyways, I got a motor out of a late '80 car, its an F54 with a P79. The car had 80,000 miles when I got it. It also started leaking a little oil when I put it in, so I decided to do another Head gasket swap since my car is down to a severed front diff mount. Today I got much done, cleaned the head and block off, ground down the GM tranny mount, and primed and painted the R/T mount, and port matched my shaved '75 manifold to meet the 240sx throttle body I put in for cable linkage [and MS later on] as I had some jerky throttle response I believe is due to crappy air as it hits the smaller mouth of the intake manifold. The PO of this motor broke 2 of the exhaust studs off in the head so hopefully tonight I will finish digging those out, and I still havent started tearing the rear end out. I really hope to be done tomorrow so I can drive the car this week, otherwise it will have to wait 2 weeks as I am going back to Baton Rouge for Mardi Gras next weekend. I will update this with some more pictures tomorrow, meanwhile, enjoy some pictures! Oh also the bolt for the GM mount came through the poly a bit at the bottom so I had to put two more washers up top. Anyone else had this problem? I'll ask Trumpet when I see him tonight. Roostmonkey I am so incredibly impressed with the quality of your welds... Thanks! [Also thank you so much 70z for selling me this mount and poly ] If you are thinking about buying one, do it! They're not around forever... P79 Head - I like it - alot. Primed R/T mount sans poly I also rethreaded all of the head stud holes It took FOREVER to trim that damn poly down, and it got all over haha Assembled!! Talk to you guys tomorrow... FlatBlack
So, after a debacle with a timing issue after I got the motor back together, I finally got the R/T mount in. It is well worth the time/money spent on it. Shifting is butter. The front rubber on the lower diff mount had completely separated, and the diff was banging every time I shifted. I went on a very 'spirited' cruise today through the western most part of Northwest Arkansas with a few buddies of mine, the lead car was an 84 Supra [thanks Kim for the pics], there was a Jeta/Golf thing [sorry I'm VW retarded] on OZ Ultraleggers - a very nice car, my buddy Kevin's Malibu Chevelle that just got an LS1, and my 78 280Z on Tokico Springs and struts, Flat Top F54/P79, 11 lbs flywheel, 5 Speed, Rota RBs with 225/50/15 Yokohamas, etc etc. I had never really driven the car like this before, and after over 2 years of hard work it has really paid off. I still haven't put my new sway bar in the front yet, but hope to do it this week. The rear did not come out at all unexpectedly, I didn't plow in the front at all, and besides a little bump steer everything was amazing. I had to keep above 4k on the exits of turns to keep up with the LS1 Chevelle but otherwise I was happy with the L28, with the proper gears it just wants to run. Here are the pictures from today: [unfortunately my car was filthy]
