GrayZee
Ok here's the problem, my oil/temp gauge dosn't work. What I would like to do is put some autometer gauges in the three gauge holes the center dash of my 280z (temp, oil, and boost) My stereo has a clock anyway.. but where can I put that volt/fuel gauge? This was my plan.. You know the round vents on the dash? (one beside the glove box and the other above the trip-meter/dimmer knobs. Has anyone ever put a factory gauge in there? Looks like it just might be the same size as the factory gauge holes.. I know that on a 240 you can turn those vents sideways and they will "pop out" with a pull. But it don't seem to work on these ones.. anyone know how to remove them without damage?
Owen
Kinda dangerous place for them if you intend to look at them. Also may cause a problem if you install a rollcage and the bars pass right in front of them. I took out the stock AC panel (and heater), made a sheet metal plate and opened up holes for two more gauges there. Other than that...how about cups mounted on the windshield pillar, the dash, or the cover for the fuse box? Crazy thing I saw was three mini gauges mounted right under (or above?) the rear view mirror. I can send you a pic if you want. Owen
BLKMGK
I'd put water temp, oil pressure, fuel level in the trio of holes. I'd then put a small boost gauge someplace else liek the steering column or on the windshield where you can see it. Fuel pressure might be nice too... Boost and fuel pressure you tend to need to watch more closely when WOT than the others. If you have to put somehting in an A/C vent maybe do oil pressure or water temp and then wire a seperate warning light to it. I've seen pics of the A/C vents being used before - it looked liek a good fit. However as Owen pointed out - rollbar will block that view, and the pillar too BTW. I test fit a Mustang pillar mount in my car - way off and I couldn't see it. Oh well...
GrayZee
Yeah well I didn't intend to put a roll bar in so that won't be a problem and I figure you only look at your fuel level once in a while (just to make sure you're not empty) Leaving the more important gauges out in the open (oil, temp, boost) I did think of the fuel pressure thing too, however did you ever check out the price of a high pressure gauge that can be safely mounted inside the car? Quite costly indeed! I do like the idea of having a boost and fuel pressure gauge in a pillar though.. Anyone know of a pillar mount kit that will fit nicely in a Z? BLKMGK
I've seen the prices of the high PSI fuel gauges - I have them in two cars I liek the electric ones best though to be honest. If this is a turbo car how can you NOT have one considering what will happen if you lose fuel pressure? As for pillars mounts - I had been told that a Mustang unit could be fitted. I tried it with one of mine - very poor fit. The plastic could be heated and formed I'm sure so perhaps that's an option? With as many pillar mounts as are being made these days surely one of them must work - problem is finding them to test fit without buying them first! Drax240z
Graham, did you get that turbo engine home then? Musta been a heck of a ride doubling it on your bike!
GrayZee
No man, actually my bike is still in Nanaimo! LOL We bought a Found On Road Dead (FORD) truck, and had to rebuild half the truck just to get it home, but that is another story.. no wait, it is more like a novel! Anyway, I got it home but haven't done anything with it yet. I wanna build a stand that will allow me to start it up right on the stand using a removable bell housing from a automatic datsun 510 that I've had in the garage for years. That way I'll have something to bolt the starter to. If it runs good I think I'll just do some detailing of the engine and drop it right in!
