PETEW
I am just starting to go over the basics in my '77 280z and making sure it is ready for the added power I will be putting in it. My question is which swap is the easiest and most affordable. I know there is lots of info on the GM350 swap, and I would think the turbo inline 6 would be very easy. I'm guessing those are the easiest but which one is the easier to do initally. I know the 350 will make bigger power for less money, but I'm only looking for a low 13 or high 12 car after it is all said and done. I heard that the turbo motors can do that with out big money being put out. Is that really true? Give me your .02 cents. I be glad to take anyone's info. Thanks
spotfitz
I know for a fact that when I went to the track looking for atleast 15's with my straight 6 w/ stock(basically) everything(minus emissions). SS ZTherapy SU's, ceramic coated 6 to 1 header, intake, fuel rail, 3:90 R200, 5 speed with a (ok, time for discuss) 17 time(with a slipping clutch), yes I said 17's(again, clutch slipping in 2nd and 3rd.). I was very disturbed. After all the money I spent into this car and still only beating Honda's(badly, mind you). Without a V8 in these cars, you are lucky to get 12's without turbo. With a V8 you are easily in the 12's maybe even 11's, which is where I hope to be in the hopefully near future, with little effort. TPIS, miniramIII and T56 is a wonderful thing and within reach without a monthy payment. Keep giving me ideas and I'll run with it! I know enough to be very dangerous. Very, very dangerous. I will be in the 10's, trust me, I'm anal!! Let me be a prodigy. I love a challenge!
pparaska
Everything I've read says a bit of tweaking of the L28T will get you in the 12s. Not sure how much or how expensive, but it sounded simple and somewhat low budget. If this is true, this would be a cheaper and easier way to get into the 12s than a V8 conversion. Of course, the V8 has other attributes that might make it enticing to some of us. Like the easy of getting into the low 12s and 11s.
scottyMIz
Hey pete go with what you want do you want turbo or V8?I personally have a turbo out of an 81zxt and all the wiring.I have put 600 bucks into my 76 280z including the turbo engine and i'm at 12.9@105mph with the clutch slipping and street tires oh ya pump gas too.I'm running the stock turbo bigger injectors,An intercooler and 3" exhaust all the way to the back. The car is alot of fun to drive and launches great my best 60' time is 1.73sec.I haven't had slicks on it yet cuz the clutch is too bad but maybe next year after the snow goes away i'll try.You will get mixed info from us it's what you perfer not us.So far for me this is the cheapest way to go and i love the turbo. Let us know what you decide
Guest Anonymous
well my .02 is a bone stock z motor should be able to handle an 80 shot to the wheels on a consitant basis. i woyld put a header on the car and invest in an exhast system .a cam wouldn`t hurt.and a properly done nitrous system can be done for around 1500 or so including ignition upgrade with a retard for the nitrous. PETEW
I thought the turbo inline six could be a quick motor. How much has to be changed to get it in the car. Are the motor and trans mounts the same. I know you need the computer and fuel controls, but what problems can come up. I know the 350 swap needs different mounts, trans tunnel widening, etc. Is the inline six turbo easier or just different? Thanks again. Nigel
At our club sponsored drag event a few weeks ago, most of the normally aspirated Z's were in the mid 14 to mid 15 second range. They were dusting many of the mid-80's Mustangs and Cameros, even moded ones. Now, these aren't stock Z's mind you. But they were only sporting typical mods like cam, headers, exhaust, carbs, etc. The fastest was a supercharged Z which ran a 13.36. As for the Turbo six, that's what I have, and the engine and driveline was a direct swap. Nigel
