TT2STConvert Posted July 22, 2009 Share Posted July 22, 2009 The 240Z that I've recently acquired sat for about two decades. As a result, just about every slider on the dash (fan speed, temp, etc) is seized. Is there any kind of spray I can use to loosen these up or do I simply have to dissect them, clean them, and use dielectric grease? Any advice is welcome... this is my first older car, so I have no experience with this kind of stuff (my other Z's were all Z32's). Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

langfordchuck Posted July 22, 2009 Share Posted July 22, 2009 the nice thing about the old mechanical design is that it is not that hard to free them up: just some awkward reaching. i use white lithium grease: trace the wires (oops, cables...) back to where you find a pivot point, lubricate it, and work it back and forth with your hand using the cable (not the lever, it may break on you and then you'll be pissed off). It may take a bit of tweaking on the angles if the pivot and joint points are out of alignment, but I find it usually works pretty good in terms of freedom of movement. Sometimes the cables rust out a bit and stick in the outer plastic tube, but a bit of lithium, or even silicon spray and some moving back and forth will work. thrustnut Posted July 23, 2009 Share Posted July 23, 2009 We just got a new product at work called Kroil. Its a rust inhibitor and it is AMAZING! I am an aircraft mechanic and have used it in the turbine section of jet engines to loosen up hardware and have never been let down. I used it a couple weeks ago on the unions on my front brake lines that where stuck to the point that I thought I was gonna have to make some new lines. I sprayed it on twice waiting about five minutes between coats and it worked like a charm. Its in an orange can, if you need more info let me know.
