JSM
I have an extra Automatic Transmission that I would like to store from my 280zxt parts car. What is the best method for storage for potential future use? Is it best to leave the fluid in? Drain including torque converter? Searched but did not find anything. DeepV
personally i'd do my best to clean it up, ditch the old atf and get some fresh atf in with a new filter, and it should be good to go. with fresh fluid you'll have less of a chance of contaminents ie water rusting internals and a fresh filter never hurts it either. i have never dealt with one of these units first hand but what i would make sure is that you plug any holes as best you can, cap the tailhousing, and try to cover up the input shaft to protect it from oxidizing. i'm sure a coat of petroluem jelly will do the job just fine. HowlerMonkey
Drain tranny and torque convertor, put convertor back on (all the way) and store. I stored one for 5 years....twice...and the frictions got crispy so....if you are handy with snap ring pliers, I suggest replacing the frictions and the modulator once it goes back into the car. It's messy to work on but damn easy to replace just the frictions. I found the O'rings ok and decided not to replace any that required a special tool to compress springs (only one) and it's going strong months later. You can see some information that might be helpful on the thread linked below. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=144769
hoov100
leave it filled, you can choose whether to leave the converter on or not, if not put a plug over the opening of it and be gentle with it.
