Guest zphreek
hey guys, i was sitting around last night thinking of things i could make for my Z and i thought of making a single groove crank pulley for my 72 Z. I was hoping that some of you experienced guys could answer a couple of questions... first, the only material i can get to make stuff out of is mild steel, would i need to make it out of something tougher?? second, would i need to get it balanced after i made it?? i would make it on a lathe of course. what do you guys think?? grenade?? Mudge
It would have to be balanced yes, if the engine is internally balanced then it must be neutral balanced. It would be better to have a harmonic dampner than just a solid chunk of steel, most dampners have rubber when in OEM form.
TomoHawk
I think that 'roundness' would be more important for a crankshaft pulley, because you need a good grip on the belt to keep the power to the water pump, etc.,so you don't through the belt off. You also don't want to add any shaking to the already out-of-balance engine (no reciprocating engine is perfectly in balance.) So my opinion would be to do the best you can at both
