Guest Anonymous
The Z is almost ready for paint. Got a couple of lamo questions regarding the windsheild and rear hatch weatherstripping. First, can I remove it and safely drive to the paint shop without the windsheild falling out? I assume that the windsheild is glued in somehow but with the heat lately I could just see the glue letting go at the worst possible moment. Has anyone installed the weatherstrip without the chrome/stainless trim? I was thinking that it might be a cleaner look not to mention easier. Finally, is there any trick to removing it or is it simply pry-and-yank?(I will be getting new stripping). Thanks for the help.
DavyZ
Be careful about driving with nothing holding the glass in. What about fixing it with some duct tape for the ride over? Bring some good solvent for cleaning up the tape glue when you've arrived. As far as the metal trim goes, the problem is that without it dirt gets trapped in the grooves and looks bad. It would look ok if it was just flat rubber, but it's not. You could powdercoat (or just spraypaint) the metal trim black. Yeah, I know not putting back in is easier--just look to see if you like the looks of it... pparaska
The gasket goes all the way around the windshield and rear glass and hold it into a hole in the car that's a good 1" larger than the glass. Sounds risky as hell. I'd just remove it when you get there. Gaskets. I've heard from people that the Precision Parts one is pretty good. but I've also heard that it doesn't sit down very well, but reputed Z car restorers. So I just sprung for OE gaskets front and rear. Ouch. That's about $150 total. And I've also heard from several restorers that the stainless trim helps to flatten the gasket down onto the car. I was going to leave it out for the same reasons, but decided to use it. It's at the powdercoaters right now with the rest of the stainless trim and the sail panel badges - semi-gloss black. Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the heads-up Davey and Pete. The last thing I need is to replace glass at this point. I realized after taking the stainless trim out that it does need to be there. I will probably just take the strip out after I get to the paint shop. I could probably call a mobile glass company and have them go straight to the paint shop when the car is done and put in the new stripping. The worst is almost over...that is prepping for paint and the "s" word. (sanding) It will be a happy day when the car is finally painted. Soon.... pparaska
Big tip on the windsheild stainless, if you use it: Put the gasket on the glass, Put the stainless in the gasket, then install the whole thing into the car. The stainless is next to impossible to put in the gasket after the windshield is in, without tearing up the gasket "lips" that hold it in. Guest Anonymous
Thanks Pete, I would have screwed that up for sure. I could have built two Z's by now considering all the things I have done twice.
Guest Anonymous
Gee, I gues that explains why the trim wasn't in the windshield on mine. The previous owner had just taped around the back one before painting, but evidentualy they put new glass in front, but painted it first.I will be painting relatively soon (within the next 3 years)so I'll just put it back together right when the time comes. I agree that if chrome isn't your cup of tea,to go ahead and "black it out".It definately is obvious "something" is missing without it there.IMO
