Auto Insurance?

I ran a search and wasn't able to come up with very much. For you guys that daily/often drive (ie: not the classic car insurance plans that only allow you to drive your car once a year, when it's sunny and you aren't feeling gassy lol) your 240z's could you give me some information on what you've done as far as insurance policies (obviously nothing private). I'm looking at getting a 1973 240, and as far as insurance on the actual car, I'm not too worried. The main concern is as a 17 year old in Miami (people are unbelievably quick to sue) I've got to have pretty hefty liability coverage (approx. 500K). I'm coming off a 2000 Acura Integra GSR Coupe (Street racers car of choice, and by the rates I pay, I'm guessing the insurance company knows that) so I'm hoping I won't see too much (little to none) of a jump in my rate. We're also planning on filing my father (70+ years old) as the primary driver (me as a secondary) of the Z and myself as the primary driver of his CRV. Explaining that I'm going off to college and the car's staying here, (technically I'm going to UM, right down the street) and I'm just on it's insurance for the "rare" occasions I drive it. Currently insured by St. Johns (great service, good rates).

Thanks,

Chris J.

I did not qualify for collectors car insurance due to too many tickets from my younger years. I should qualify this summer. In the meantime, I'm insured through all-state. 100/300/100. Costs me about $300 every 6 months. My Z is listed as a secondary vehicle, with estimated mileage as less than 5000 miles a year. You can also get a better rate when you sign up for multiple insurance coverage. For example, by including home owners insurance with my vehicle coverage, I was able to save $200. Strange how it works, but usually if you have multiple insurance plans with the same company, you get more benefits and a lower rate. If you value your soon to be Z, get classic car insurance. Regular insurance will value it very low, and should you get in an accident, totally screw you over.

My Z is a weekend only car, and I have it tagged as an antique. As soon as my current insurance coverage expires, I will be switching to classic car insurance. Its not only cheaper than standard insurance policies ($200 per year), but also has MUCH better coverage, namely agreed upon value. The advantages are multiple. The only downside is the restriction on driving and mileage...but like I said, my car is only a weekend car. If I didnt have so many previous tickets, I would have done it from the beginning.

Look into having your father be the the primary driver under classic car insurance and find out what the rules are for secondary named drivers. As long as you have a clean record, you should be able to be listed. If you get pulled over, just say you are testing the performance of a recently "fixed" item and carry an old part with you like a dirty looking slave cylinder. Usually with cars tagged as antique or classic, and if you have classic car insurance, you are restricted to:

- The occasional pleasure drive

- To or from a car related event or club

- To test the performance of the vehicle

- To or from car related maintenance and service

I looked into the classic car insurances I could find, and few (though CHUBB may be an exception) seem to apply to me as I plan on driving the car almost every day. I'm going to contact my insurance agent and see what they can do for me, but the rate I'm paying right now (Not sure, as my fathers crv and mothers accord are also lumped in, but i'd guess the insurance on my GSR as easily costing me 3500/year. I'll just have to see what they say about a sports car from '73.

Thanks

I put my daughter on my 80 zx last year because it was the car with the cheapest premium for her. She has never driven it, she drives our 02 maxima. She has no tickets. For liability at State Farm I pay $48 every 6 months on the zx. But I also get a multiple discount for 5 vehicles.

Chris J:

I'm in a similar situation, trying to register my '73 240Z (98% stock, value $6K approx) as "collectible". I got this quote last week from Hagerty ( www.hagerty.com ). $170.00/yr gets Liability: $250/500K. Medical: $5K. Uninsured & Underinsured $250/500K. Property: $100K. Comp. & Collision $0.00 (zero) deductible. No limit on mileage, just the stipulation that it won't be a DD. I'm still looking for a few more quotes but Hagerty is very tempting being $90.00/yr lower than my current policy.

Good luck with your search.

Doug.
