respirator for painting

Plan on spraying primer over clean metal today. I got a high quality polyurethane primer (needs catalyst) yesterday and purchased a respirator that the body shop supply store said is what they normally sell. It is a charcoal and gauze filter type. I notice in some of the shops that they are using full air mask to spray. Is thnis necessary or is the charcoal and gauze adequate. I will be doing in a reasonably well ventilated garage. All other paint work will be done professionally but need to get the bare metal covered now. Thanks. Still trying to decide on spray gun. Probably will go with siphon variety on basis of cost

John,

As for breathing protection, if the primer contains cyanide compounds, then the activated charcoal is not sufficient. However, since you will be venting the area well, probably not worth the expense of breathing apparatus.

I would recommend that you reconsider the gravity feed spray gun. In my experience, they work better and most pros are going that route too.

JOHN G-PAINT RESPIRATOR

WHEN SPRAY PAINTING THE NEW POLYURETHANE

PAINTS, AFTER ACTIVATING THE PAINT, LET PAINT

"BREATHE" FOR ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES. IF YOU DO THIS,

ALOT OF THE TOXIC FUMES WILL ESCAPE. REMEMBER THESE PAINTS ARE HIGHLY TOXIC SO TAKE CARE WHEN

PAINTING.

ALOHA,

SUNNY

Epoxy is a primer that needs a catalyst and does not have any isos. All 2K primers contain isos except a VERY new ppg 2K which is iso free. Read carefully. The masks do not filter isos, no matter how new they are. You need a fresh air system.

I got VERY sick by using a less than adequate mask once. It is a very rotten feeling; took days to feel right again. If I ever do my own painting again, I will make sure I have the right one.
