Car sputters and loses all power

Ive finally managed to get everything in order to start driving my 72 240. The car had sat for 15years roughly before I started driving it. But shortly after starting to drive it I noticed that something wasnt right. The car is seeming to run very very rich. It idles fine and free-revs fine as well. I can drive the car for roughly 5-10 mins before I start having a misfire or flooded symptom. Ive checked the timing and it seems to be ok. At first thought I assumed it was being flooded out so I would back off on throttle and it didnt ever seem to fix itself. After thinking some I came to another conclusion that maybe the fuel pump wasnt pushing enough pressure so I would just be sure to drive real easy and be conservative on the gas consumption which appeared to fix the problem but regardless the car starts to sputter and has no power once it gets to around 3k+ rpm. The car runs crisp through 1st and 2nd gear but 3rd and 4th it dies out. Im pretty sure its a fuel delivery/carb problem as the car just appears to be running ultra rich but it seems to eventually be starved of fuel also. The car has a new set of spark plugs and wires and running with an E88 head if that is relevant info for an answer to this post...

So my concern is what I need to do to maybe fix this. Im in between jobs at the moment and need to get the car to be drivable.

With the given info above can someone tell me what appears to be the cause of this? Im using my general knowledge of cars to think that its either a carb tuning issue or a fuel pump that isnt working to full potential. And if anyone can just give me a quick incite as to how to adjust how rich/lean the carbs run?

Well the person I purchased the car from had apparently cleaned them out and tweaked them to get the car to run. To what extent they cleaned them and if they knew what they were doing I dont know. The carbs have spacers on them so Im not sure wether or not the jets are stock or not.. Im just trying to figure out the cheapest way to make the car drivable till I can get to making money to continue with the restoration.

You also need to get a fuel pressure gauge and figure out if you have too much pressure or not enough, If you do some searching you can find the correct fuel pressure, I'm guessing you have SU's. If you have just an electric pump you may be pumping to much fuel from what it sounds like your describing, but you might not have enough either. Determining your fuel pressure will help out a lot.
