Lozer
Ive been searching all day trying to find the info i need and have come up with the answer for a 240 but nothing for a 280z. Q1. If i don't section my struts what will the adjustable height be ok for auto x? Q2 if i do secetion my struts which insert should i use? Mr2 rears? or 300zx? Now for auto x purposes what would you heavy seat time guys do? section or not section the struts? tires are 245/50/16 all around spring rates are 325f and 400r (with seam welding and bracing installed) front camber at 2.5- rear at 1.5- 1/8th toe out front 0 in rear current set up is pretty nutral with a touch of under steer. (riding the bump stop up front 1 inch of compression) Edited October 2, 2010 by Lozer
burninator
Q1. If i don't section my struts what will the adjustable height be ok for auto x? I'm not sure exactly, but your not going to get very much usable adjustment. If you lower it too much you'll run out of travel pretty fast. But at those rates your probly not going to roll very much. Q2 if i do secetion my struts which insert should i use? Mr2 rears? or 300zx? At that spring rate I think your looking at Koni yellows, or custom valved Bilsteins. (riding the bump stop up front 1 inch of compression) I would section them for sure. With sticky tires you'll go through that 1 inch of compression and it won't be so neutral anymore. Is that your current setup you have listed, or the setup you wanting to go with?
Lozer
thats the set up im going to be going with. My current set up is cut coils and blown struts. After some deeper hunting i found that the struts i want are the 87-89 mr2 rear struts to section the front. Everything is on order and coming soom. burninator
What are you going to use to section the rear? Front Z struts? Those are some pretty high rates and a big difference front to rear. I hope whatever struts you purchased can handle those rates. Good luck with your setup. It's quite different from what I went with. My setup isn't perfect, but I like how it handles a lot. I'm interested to hear back you impressions of how the handling is when you get this stuff installed. What tires are you going to run? Do you have an LSD? Lozer
ive got an lsd im running 245/50 16s 300treadwear tires all around. I'm gonna stick kyb's in there till i can get my koni reds rebuilt this winter. im not sure im going to section the rears yet. at the current height i have 2.5 inches of shock travel and with the tires i have i cant go much lower. I have an event coming up on the 16th ill let you know what i think. The current set up had a touch of understeer (what v8 z dosen't) I tend to like a very stiff suspension
burninator
I'm sure there are lots of V8 Zs that don't understeer. It's a matter of having the suspension adjusted to handle it. The lsd probly doesn't help the understeer but I'm sure is needed for traction. The KYB struts will definitely not handle those spring rates well. It's going to be way under-damped and not show it's true potential. I'm not sure about the Koni reds, but make sure before you have them rebuilt that they can be valved to handle those spring rates. It may very well be cheaper to just buy Koni Yellows from Beta Motorsports than to have your reds revalved. The Yellows are better struts anyways. Definitely post back after you try it out. Lozer
ok all is installed and initially adjusted (ride height). First impresion with these wheight springs OMFGBBQ this car has never stuck this well before. The under steer is mostly gone (might have been the wasted lca bushing i replaced too) and im happy as a pig in **** still need to play with the adjustment more and look into getting her corner balanced but right now im pleased.
