71/77 Conversion...

A sad day has come, and I have been told by my body man that to fix the front end of my 71 will be a whole lot more money than I have to spend on it right now...it may be the day when its over for my 71...it needs new floors, new frame rails, new rad support, essentially, a whole new front end...

after hearing such bad news, I bought a 77 shell in good shape...but the problem is, it is just a shell...no interior, no wire, no motor, no tranny, nothing...it comes with tires and brakes and a rearend...I am going to be attempting to transfer everything out of my 71 into my 77 now...I have an L24 with some extensive work done to it that I am swapping, and am going to try to essentiall build the exact same car...I am currently building a fibreglass mould to make myself a fibreglass hood, and am also building a mould for the flares that are on the 71, as well as possibly front fender moulds as well, so I can cast as much as possible out of fibreglass...

can anyone tell me how hard it is going ot be to retro fit everything out of my 71 into my 77? I am pretty sure that all of the mechanical aspects shouldnt be difficult, but I have been told that the dash and console have different mounting points and that the whole interior could be a pain in the ass to fit into the 77...

has anyone done this before? can anyone offer any help/suggestions to make this whole ordeal a little easier?

thanx...

Start switching parts and look for another 280 to take parts from too. (and then write a detailed hand book on the differences). Sounds like you have a handle on the major differences now.

For what's it worth, yesterday a couple of kids I know purchased a wrecking lot 72 240 (complete) and proceded to swap parts from a bent 77 280Z. They asked me if they could swap their new 280 dash into the 240. I told them that the mounting brackets were different and suggested they sell the 280 on EBay. This evening I stopped by the chat and the 280 dash was nicely and cleanly mounted into the 240. According to them, the mounting brackets are spaced correctly, but the 280 dash needed to be "pushed" a bit to fit. It was in there, looked good and used the 280 "valance" cover between the dash and the windshield. My credibility took a big hit. Try it it might work.(The kids deleted the heater and are not using any a/c heat controls.)
