Guest TKR514
I'm doing a restoration. The old paint is fine but the clear coat is beginning to flake in a few places. Can I just sand down to the paint & re-spray or is down-to-the-metal the accepted method? Is paint stripper the prefered method if I need to get down to metal? Thanks! JKDGabe
As long as the paint is solid that's fine. You don't want bare metal in some places and paint in others though. That will leave waves in the finish. I'd just sand off the clear...
Guest TKR514
I feel the paint is solid, no problems in 10 years so far. Just the clear seems to be lifting in a few spots due probably to sun/heat on the top of the car...
Guest Anonymous
Racer X is the paint expert around here but I have covered old paint with new before so here is my schtick. As mentioned, Should be no problem painting over old paint if the old paint does not consist of multiple layers.Just ruff up old paint for proper adherence to new paint and fill in bare metal or problem areas with primer. block sand
