Cool stuff at NASA

Last weekend I went to visit an engineer buddy of mine and he gave me a tour of the shop he works in. It's a NASA contract shop and some of the stuff in there was absolutely amazing. They run a cooling routine to test flight equipment at low temperatures. The cooling chamber is about 40 foot diameter and about 4 stories tall. They were in the process of bringing the temperature in the chamber down to 7 degrees Kelvin. I'll do the conversion for you....that's -446.8 ºF. It takes 30-60 days to get it down that low using liquid helium. They also had a subwoofer to test flight equipment for vibration durability during launch. It used a horn subwoofer with a mouth about 12 foot in diameter, in a room the size of a movie theater standing on end.

Impressive stuff. Photography was politely discouraged so I don't have anything to show.
