  1. I have a very nice 1977 280Z all original with 102,XXX miles. Clean, clean. No rust means no rust. Email if you want photos. I am in California. jesseover@yahoo.com (805) 967-6213 Jesse

  2. Hey Howard, I may have what you are looking for. A very clean '77 280z five speed. How convenient we live in the same town,SB. I just registered today, 5/17 and it passed smog no problem last year. Please call me 805-967-6213--Jesse. Everything works but the clock and all the lights around the car are bright as new. I also have a sway bar for it that I never installed. Tires are at 90% and much maintenance done to car. It now has 102,000 original miles, not 202 or 302XXX.

  3. Alright Wiki D. I like the idea of installing the MS into my na ecu, clean up the wiring after install, change the valve cover, get it tuned well, look around for younger a green sniffer to do the check, maybe cross my fingers and I will probably be okay.I 'know'a guy too. He helped me out with my Camaro years ago. What about pulling the catalytic converter? Is this a visual check that could/will fail me if I can't find 'my' guy? I need to find that link you mentioned.

  4. Yeah this California smog stuff is a real bummer. I had a '69 Camaro in the late 90's. I think smog was anything post-'65 back then. I had a Performer intake and Holley 650 carb. I had to buy a stock manifold and carb to get it to pass, money and time spent I was not thrilled about. I'd then swap back and did this for two cycles. I had more energy then and that swap wasn't too hard anyway. The way I see now, I'm left with three options: 1. build a new motor and swap every cycle, 2: do a little vin swap from a junker, 3. my mom also has a '77, so if I found a cool smog guy I could have them sniff her car and couple the result to my car; I may be dreaming here? I'd be interested to hear any input on this last idea.

I did the turbo swap already to my last '71, and finding one completely intact for the '77 seems farfetched. Ideally, because the car is so clean, I'd like to increase power while keeping a stock appearance. I'm willing to stroke the motor out too, but any mod at this point is sketchy. I'll talk to the rep and see what he/she says. I'll keep you all posted.

  5. I know, it's a pain in the butt for sure. I had '71Z before this, which I installed the '83et setup on after reading through dozens of posts on Hybridz. I sold the car because I was ready for something nicer. This '77 is a reall marshmallow. She drives so nice, no rattles, sounds solid rolling over rough roads and all the weather stripping is perfect, so at 90 m.p.h she's solid as a rock. I'm just just missing the torque. But I'm also really conscience about ruining the car by fooling around with mods but a nice 3.0 Rebello with tripples would be so fine if I could afford it. Any thoughts on modifying such a nice Z?

  6. I got my complete L28et setup with great running 5-speed for $625. I've put 30,000 miles on it and it runs near perfect, aside from having to wiggle the ecu plugs from time to time. I bought the motor and trans is California.

  7. It's pretty easy swap, Jim. I did that swap in my '71 and it was the best $700 I ever spent. I ran a completely stock setup out of a '83. My Z was quicker than most other cars on the road, and could walk a 350Z from a dead stop until I let off the pedal. If you are going to sell the carbs let me know what you have.

  8. Hey Hybridz. I live in California, the state of strict emission control. I'm looking to increase power keeping a stock appearance. Also, being that my car needs a smog every two years I need to keep my emissions under control. I'm looking to increase the performance of my Z. Would having my head, or finding another head with port work, add performance to my motor keeping the stock injectors, cam and ECU. Would head work affect the emission output of the motor. Here's a couple pics of 'baby.'

  9. I'm just fishing for some opinions here. I have a complete L28et which I replaced the timing chain and tensioner about 2 thousand miles ago. The motor probably has 170,000 miles on it, but seems fine. It still has good cross hatching on the cylinders. I recently bought a 280z with 92,000 miles on it, motor too. I will be moving soon and am looking to reduce the crap I have. Any thoughts on swapping my turbo stuff over to the na motor since it has less miles? One motor has to go.

  10. I recently purchased a '77 280z and am thinking about putting my l28et into it. It's in my p.o.s. 240z now. This may be another dumb question, but did the L28et make your 280z feel much quicker? It made my 240z into a little rocket, I'm just not sure, because of the weight of the 280z, it'll feel much faster. Am I totally here? I kind of like the stock feel of the stock motor, but I'm lacking the pick up I enjoyed from the 240zet. Any comments?

  11. I recently purchased a clean 510 blue 78 Z. It has the 3-speed auto which I've decided I enjoy. I have a complete L28et and am thinking about putting it in it. Any idea how much quicker the car will feel? What's the power increase, about 35h.p? Will the tach work with the '83et setup?

    Thanks ya'll.

  12. Crap. I've been working to get the timing cover off for 30min and my back already hurts. Anyone have an idea what size the crank pulley bolt is? And what gaskets need be replaced pulling off the timing cover? And am I going to have to drop the oil pan? I'm making a list so I don't have to drive back and forth to the auto shop. I live in the country now and it's more than an hour drive round trip.

As far as the head being milled, they shaved .008in. The head was not damaged, so i guess you'd call it a clean up pass. Anyway, if you say this is too much and it'll affect my timing, I'm marching out and I'm buying a damn Honda!

  13. I have the motor pulled and head milled and ready to be put back. I'm wondering does the cam gear and chain have to line up with the marks I made. If the camshaft was not turned, nor the crank, the timing should be fine despite which notch the gear goes back on, right? This question is more out of curiosity, what I think really happened is the tensioner sucked of the chain down, which makes it seem like my marks on the chain and gear don't line up. But I'm not sure, this is my first time attempting a headgasket repair. Any thoughts or wisdom here appreciated.

  14. I've been reading up on head gasket posts and came up with a question. I learned that water entering my block could be the result of timing cover corrosion, and i am guilty of running my car for quite some time without coolant. My question is this, if it is the timing cover being corroded could this also be the cause of white smoke out the tailpipe? I will pop the timing cover off tomorrow to check, but I was just thinking how much easier this fix would be than a HG job.

  15. The head comes off tomorrow, then it's down to the machine shop to check it for cracks. I'll keep ya'll filled in if you want? I'm hoping it's just a shave and a head gasket. I'm going to AutoZone and as you probably know they sell Felpro. I think this will raise compression a bit, but I don't know for sure. I know I can use a calculator for this, anyway it's probably going to be fine unless someone thinks these gaskets are for the birds. Should I replace the head bolts? APR perhaps? Old ones just fine?

  16. I'm going to try to locate another P90. I spent a couple hours searching about cammed L28et's last night and it's not task I'm ready to take on. The stock P90 is capable of much more than I'm shooting for. I was just wanting the "rump, rump, rump" sound from my motor--not worth it. Build an N/A if I want that, right.

  17. Thanks. Anyone think this is a good or bad idea for my L28et. "E88 head off a 72' built with big valves, brass guides, cammed, and slightly ported." I'm exploring some options and am not sure a cammed head for the turbo is a good idea. I'd love the sound of some lope. Any thoughts here. Thanks again. By the way my motor is stock from ecu to t3
