  1. Actually, I spent a few hours last night taking things apart. It actually looks like I won't have to remove/replace the whole thing after all. I'm still gonna need to cut decent chunks out of another car, but only the skin and not the whole thing.
  2. Awesome. Thanks a ton guys. I really appreciate it. I'll let you know how it goes, when it goes.
  3. If anyone else needs this sort of info, I'm piecing together other posts. As soon as I get into it myself I'll post pics here (this will be easy as my friend will be the guy doing the work, and I'll be the guy with the camera in one hand and a drink in the other ). Anywho, here is another post with some decent info on doing this. http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php?/topic/81068-removing-rear-fender-on-a-zx/ It seems like a TON of work. And that is oddly exciting to me.
  4. Normally I would agree; economically speaking. But I didn't get this for economics, it's more of a time killer/fun thing to do. No matter the hobby, you're always going to invest money into it that will not have a return other than personal satisfaction/gratification. That's what I'm looking for with this. I would like to see it looking nice, running nice, etc. Doesn't need to be a show stopper, but I want to invest my time and money into my hobby, and see something come from the nothing that it currently is. This is why I'm not down with taking it to someone for every issue. I want to put my hands on as many of the issues as I possible can. The only thing I want someone else to handle are the things I simply can not. Like the dash. I'm not going to buy a new one, or even a used one. I'm going to fix what I have. Same with the rest of the interior and a lot of the other rust issues. If I simply can't handle it due to ability, then I have a few buddies that will help on the cheap. Otherwise, whether I break it or not, it will be of my own accord. Ya know?
  5. Just the skin. Both side panels, and the back butt (I don't know what to call it.) This is my worst case scenario. I had enough time to tear into the sides to get a look at it, but haven't removed the tail lights yet to really asses the butt. So, if I only need the panels, I'm thinking I can just cut them and get them welded. But from the surface, the butt looks pretty rough and I'm afraid I won't be able to "fix" it rather than replace it. That would be really awesome, but so far my expectations have been pooped on. Where I find rust and think I have it figured, there's more right behind it. I'm trying now to approach this as a "it's even worse than you think it is" mindset. Better to be pleasantly surprised than grossly disappointed. And getting a new car is not an option. I have a history of setting my mind and doing what I need to do until my goal is met. I could have bought 2 wheels and a shifter and I won't stop until it's all pretty and moving.
  6. I should mention that I have a few friends that are welders. I am somewhat handy myself. I'm taking this to a body guy to consider my return on investment (if it would be worth it to just have someone fix the bad stuff), but I do enjoy doing some of this stuff myself. If I can remove the piece, and I can have a friend weld it, I would do that. If it's not so simple as heading to the JY, spending 10 minutes to remove it and simply welding it back on, well then I'm likely to spend the money.
  7. I'm taking my car to a few body guys over the next couple weeks to get quotes/solutions. The following problem is something I don't think I can fix myself (unless someone has an idea on how), but I do need to educate myself on the process/solution before I shell out any moneys. If you look at the following pic, I need to basically remove the rear of another car, and mine and bring the other piece on to mine. There are a few at the JY I can pick up, but I don't know how to remove this section. The red lines are what I need to cut. I can take more if I need to, I just don't know how. There are a recent post http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php?/topic/91334-tail-light-panel/ where z-ya eluded that he had to drill a bunch of holes to get the following piece: This is what I need with a little more of the sides. Any details/suggestions/info on getting this removed from mine and another car is greatly appreciated.
  8. is at work...thinking about his car; using company bandwidth to read Hybrid Z forum posts.

  9. Right on. I'm gonna tackle it as soon as I sell my bike (shouldn't be more than a month from now). The part that's got my fear at the moment is the rear. I need to replace the quarter panels/whole rear body. I'm simply not able to do that. I have a welder friend that can do the floors for me, but we are all a little scared of cutting mine and another car in an attempt at replacing the rear body. The red lines are the cuts I need to get rid of the rust I can't repair. Every time I talk about this I get more angry. Most of the rust isn't really that bad. But the kid I bought it from explained that he "does body work for a living, so he knows what he's doing." There wasn't a single rust spot on this car that was actually taken care of. Instead, he just threw bondo on it. And I mean threw it. I can't find any spots where he even tried to smooth it out. And you can see where it just kept growing, more bondo thrown at it, and it kept growing. I simply can't fix any part of the rear. Sigh....Ok. It's cool. It's a project. It'll be fun.
  10. @Kelltainer, Exaclty what I'm looking for. Thanks a ton @sticky280zx, I greatly appreciate the offer. I prefer to find as many DIY solutions as I can. I have a huge rust problem that is a bit out of my range of ability so am going to be shelling enough money as it is. Stupid rust.
  11. 1981 280ZX NA 2+2 The following pics show my current dash. I've searched the forum and I think I'm still a bit confused about my replacement/repair options. It's in pretty rough shape, and I would like a better look. I'm not a purist, so I don't mind if it isn't the stock dash. I see that there are several "caps" for around $90. But is that just something you throw over your shabby dash? That seems like more of a bandaid to me. Then I see that I can buy full replacement dashes for around $1400. That's just silly. I also see a few posts from people planning on swapping a 240sx dash. There are 5 at the yard I go to, and I'm heading there tomorrow. So my question is, am I correct about the cap option? My buddy said buy the cap and rip up the old stuff on my dash currently "it would look like new" he says. The logic seems sound, but I don't have much experience in that area. If swapping is my option that's not the worse news I could get. I don't mind trimming, cutting, kicking it in there. I'm just trying to understand my options a bit better without forking over too much more than I paid for the car. Thanks in advance for replies. This forum has been really helpful in my new adventure. I really appreciate it.
  12. Awesome. Thank you. I am curious, though, why the car seems to run just fine. My understanding of an 02 sensor is that it helps to determine what amounts of fuel to inject. Shouldn't then, my car feel retarded in some way; either too lean or too rich?
  13. I just bought my Z a few days ago. I paid for it and drove it all the way home with minimal problems (40 miles with no stalling, choking, sputtering, etc.). I get it home and open the hood for a closer inspection. Then I find this: It was just laying there right next to the injectors. I look through a FSM I got, and see that it's the "Exhaust Gas Sensor." The description of its purpose is: So yeah, that sounds kinda important. But it ran all the way home with no problems. The thing is, I can't find out where it is supposed to go. I looked all over the place according to the drawn image in the FSM. And then I see this pic by abc_was_here: So I can just barely see that it goes somewhere in this area, but I don't see anywhere on my car that it's supposed to go. What gives? Like I said, it seems to be running fine; but with a description like that I feel like I need it. Plus I don't want swinging parts hangin' around the engine while I drive.
  14. I can't thank you enough for putting this together. I am heading to the yard this weekend with this in hand. Will see what fits (my rear, not the car). I hope this keeps getting updated.
