I would think the vacuum was cause the compressor to stall, wouldn't you be more likely to overspin the turbo in that condition?

85s also have the watercooled turbo, I think they may have changed mid 85 model year. The water lines are easy to find if you're poking around the junkyard.
I think MR2 just has an electric pump (which would be much easier to do at a retrofit application), NSX and S2000 (probably more) have fully electronic racks. Any of the electric/hybrid cars would've had them as well I'd imagine.
