  1. DANG!

Sorry to see you having that bolt break!

My flywheel-crank bolts were backing out but I think the crank is bad. (hairline cracks from an accidential expedition to 8,500+ years ago when the tranny broke)

  2. I was wondering what psi... If anyone has ever put a pressure guage on a turbo manifold.

I think it has been done...one of teh 500HP+ L6 guys was saying how his exhaust pressure was lower than the intake pressure at high RPMs...

But for most of us with a "normal" turbo the pre-turbine pressure should be higher than the output from the cold side of the turbo.

Think about it, if your turbo has a higher pressure on the intake side wouldn't it normally spin the turbo backwards? AKA surge?

I have a feeling that the guys that see lower pressures on the exhaust side see it because of the excess amount of heat being put into the turbo at high RPM/pressure ranges.

That way more heat is being turned into energy to spin the turbo than just wind spinning a fan.

That is just my limited view though and don't count on it.

  3. I've considered doing that - using the na manifold, that is. However, if I go with the L28 instead of an engine swap, I may get a MSA 3-2 header and use that for a similar setup.

I would be wary of putting any backpressure on a thin mild steel tubular header like the MSA ones.... The stock cast manifold can withstand plenty of back pressure(turbo) though with no worries.

  4. How about a serious case of a dead distributor with a mix of SUs needing rebuilding?

My video(look at 40 seconds in...the third afterfire looks to have a hint of flame):

It was soo freaking loud inside the car from the "afterfire" that I had temporary hearing impairment after driving the crap...

It also blew out/compacted most of the muffler packing which made the car even louder. :-(

It was plenty loud already. I even contemplated wearing ear plugs when driving the thing.

The video cuts out most of the noise so it sounds more reasonable...but its not.

  5. Until midsummer at least, my stroker won't be taking much shape. I'll be able to purchase the Block soon enough, but with the modifications needed and sourcing other parts, I'll be a while.

Anyway....What do liners (the physical part, not the machine work) actually cost, on average? It may not be worth my time to cast and machine my own...

I have seen plain dry liners for $12 each... Whereas wet liners are a whole different story. Maybe $100+/cylinder?

Check out Darton for wet sleeves. They can install them for you too if you ship them your block.

  6. sorry guys, what plates are you talking about? Please post some pictures so I have some ideas. I don't mind bring back some small stuffs for you guys. Just send me an email and I will ask my friend to start looking. Some pictures to identify what you are talking about would helpful.

Licence plates... just old licence plates... like what the cops call in before they pull you over. Those.

Actually I'd be down for two.

  7. Johnc,

I just got a job welding on thick 18 gauge 304SS for custom resturant kitchen tables/sinks and general fabrication so I will be spending lots of time in the 35-55 amp range. These HF $50 helmets are good for the hobbiest or someone in welding classes but mine was going crazy at lower amps in TIG.

I have used a buddies 9002X before($275 to $900+ depending on acessories) and it is about half the weight of one the HF helmets which makes a difference at the end of a 8 hour shift. You can see different colors in the arc and weld with the 9002X which can help for low amperage TIG. I have also seen the head strap problem but it should not be too much of a deal if it breaks. Just tape it up as you said. Maybe some pop-rivets...

I will still keep my HF helmets for MIG welding on cars and for other people in the garage that want to watch.
