  1. Yo, I have a 1976 280Z with a Holley 390 cfm, holley red fuel pump, arizona zcar manifold, and fuel pressure regulator set at 4.

the car runs fairly well, starts on first try everytime and is much more powerful than the old injection already, but i was told by a mechanic that i need to play around with some different size jets on the two barrells closest to the valve cover (the ones w/out the butterfly over them). The engine is a 2.8L bored .040 over, medium racing cam, flat top pistons, and im on a tight budget for this vehicle. I am trying to tune the car for racing and autocross for the summer. The jets on the electric choke side are the correct size i guess, but the others aren't, and I don't want to spend a ton of time and money trying to tune this thing perfectly and I am headed off to college at the end of the summer, so if any of you know which size of jets to use, or have at least an idea, that would be awesome. Thanks

  2. kill me now. If I saw that car in my town I'd be really pissed off. He's not fooling anyone, porsches don't come in tangerine orange! And yeah, why the hell are there civic headlights in the rear. RRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEE.

  3. I was all happy today because I finally got done with my whole four barrel set up, because I had a messed up FI system before. I got the cable linkage all hooked up to the pedal, and fired it up for the first time with it connected to the pedal. I drove it out of the shop and noticed a ton of oil leaking from in between the head and the timing cover next to the distributor. I wondered how the hell it could be the head gasket, I only had put about a thousand miles on the newly rebuilt engine, but that was the only gasket there. I then popped the valve cover and looked down the timing chain case, and my head gasket was clearly visible, the bolt hole on the gasket was torn, and it almost looked as if it got sucked in, which I know is not possible because the oil pressure pushes out anyways. I must have had the head gasket a little off set because I put my timing cover on after I put my head on, but it is weird how I never had any leaks before, and now it is like a waterfall. At least the engine sounds good though, runs great, holley 390 cfm, holley red fp, and arizonazcar intake manifold. But now Im left with having to take my whole head off and put on the new head gasket. While I have the head off, would it be a good idea to replace it with a metal one? Well, either way I have a lot of work ahead of me.

  4. I have used SU's and Holley four barrel carbs. Right now on my current Z after FI problems, I just installed the AZ zcar manifold, Holley Red fuel pump, FP regulator and a nice 390cfm. I did this all myself and I am what you could call an "amateur mechanic." This is an extremely easy setup, and the first time I turned the key it fired right up. The car runs great, and I am happy with the definite increase in hp. Just make sure to run a hot wire from the Holley red to a power wire somewhere else on the vehicle, (I almost hooked it up to the original wiring), as the FI pumps work totally different. I would recommend the 4-barrel set up, the SU setup is equally comparable though.

  5. Thanks tony. Are the small black cables which go through the firewall just choke cables or something? Again I don't know much about carbs, but I'm pretty sure the guy who is helping me will know what to do as far as tuning them and such, the main thing I am kind of worried about is the linkage, and missing that top part of it. Maybe ill get a universal linkage kit, who knows, but any more ideas and pictures of SU's in a 280 engine bay would be cool.

    Thanks

  6. Yeah, I saw that yesterday and almost crapped my pants. I really couldn't tell if it was a honda, a nascar, or a no, no, it can't be a Z. I really like the white console and blue stripes on the door panels. I think they call that "rice" blue, I'm not sure though. Gotta love spray paint. What are people thinking turning a classic into a wannabe honda. WHY? WHY? WHY?

  7. Well, I know I would need a special intake, and I wouldn't buy the MSA one, I would buy the arizonazcar.com one which is 259.00, or just make one out of stainless steel. I already drew up the plans for one. I wouldn't use a holley carb though, I would now probably use an edelbrock 500cfm performer. But I don't even know if this is a good idea yet, and the turbo idea is just a thought for me but I will either go SU, or 4 barrell. My FI system is crap, and I have a wiring problem hidden in my harness that 3 different shops can't find, so I AM gonna carb my car one way or another.

  8. My block looked worse than yours when I opened up my engine. My car sat with a blown HG for 5 years before I bought it. I got new pistons, and bored it .40 over and honed. Guess how much it cost? FREEEEE!!!! (except for the pistons) But usually each cylinder costs about $300.00 to get a 6 cylinder bore job. At least at this shop. But your block is fixable, even if it is cracked, there are always sleeves, and sleeves make your cylinders more bulletproof anyway. I don't know if it is worth buying a $175.00 block, wouldn't you at least get that block honed or possibly bored? Well, just trying to help out.

  9. Yeah, maybe it would work better using a four barrell set up though. Holley Red fuel pump, holley regulator, custom intake manifold, a holley carb bonnet, small turbo, 280ZXT exhaust manifold. I don't know, I'll look at the book and check it out, I'll figure something out for a crazy idea. I have seen tons of V8s with Vortechs with carb bonnets. If a 4 barrell can handle that much boost, I think it could handle the amount put out by a small turbo.

  10. Yeah, I am just thinking that I wouldn't use a stock 280ZX turbo, but something smaller like an old Subaru turbo. My buddy told me that if you have that much boost with carbs, you need a fuel pressure regulator that measures your psi and adds more fuel when you are at high rpms and at high boost, but then adds less again when you are at stock idle. I don't really want to use that crazy regulator, if I can, I just want to use stock parts. Should I try it with a small turbo? I could easily conjure up some parts at the junkyard, and weld up a mounting plate to the 280ZX exhaust manifold, and weld up the turbo outlet to the SU's. I don't know if it is just a crazy idea, but is it worth a try? I could probably do it for like a hundred bucks. Would I need anything else?

    Thanks.
