2011 GTI Here. After a turbo swap, intake, exhaust and intercooler upgrade I'm now probably somewhere above 300whp (based on advertised numbers from the company who does my tune and Dynos from other people with similar mods)
I love my hatchback. If the Focus ST had been out when I was car shopping, I may have given it a chance.
I was going to go for the gti but I was thinking of would want some upgrades for power? I probably would, but the st has more power so I won't want to do any...at least for a lot longer lol

I think it shares motor/trans with Mazda 3-which could be another possability.
Shouldnt be the same. The eco boost engine is new and its a 6 speed manual.

So Im in the market for a new d.d. and with a baby on the way I know im going to need 4 doors. We have a smaller SUV for my wife, and since Im the one who commutes to work everyday im looking for a hatch back. Im really into hot hatches and there isn't too many options here in the US. We have the MS3, the GTI, WRX(hate the interior unless I get an STI but then its out of the price range), a mini which has two doors for a cooper, or a clubman or that weird mini suv thing which I thing is hideous...Now ford came out with the new Focus ST. I'd like to start out by saying I've never been a Ford fan, actually was pretty against American cars all together, but times are changing and Ford has come back with such good design, reliability and quality in the last few years. So today I went and test drove the new 2013 Focus ST and I fell in love.
Before I took the car for a test drive I had to make sure the baby seat fit in the back, and after a little struggle with trying to hurry up and get it in there I had it clipped in and it fit with enough room for people to sit in and still be comfortable in the back, even though its a bit cozy in the back
So I took the car around the block and after I got back the salesman let me take the car on the freeway to drive to the next exit and get back on the freeway and head back. It's been so long since I've driven a manual, I didn't stall it or anything but I forgot it was a 6 speed...while I was still in 4th lol. The torque was so good it didn't even get high into the revs so I had to make sure to make some extra gear changes Needles to say I get back have to talk to the salesman about color and options, I hate doing that at a dealer lol. I didn't buy it but I am planning on it, I want either Blue or Black. The one I drove was Race red...Not my color, and then the package I want is the St2 package which has the Recaro seats and the Myford touch. Price is 26,800 for what I want, and its pretty reasonable for what you get with lots of soft touch material, good ride and so fourth. It has great handling, quick steering, and big summer tires, the clutch had very nice feel and was very easy to drive.
I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on HZ, I don't know how many people like front wheel drive cars here. BTW the FRS/BRZ is not an option because there's no room for a babyseat
So lets here some opinions

Is that the view of the ceiling from your barely open eyelids after way too much sanding, too much coffee, and nothing in the stomach to calm it all?
The cheapster in me is looking at this glass table next to me saying "you know, we're moving again this year... I could re-purpose that as a dedicated head sanding surface..."
How bout you try it soon and let us know how you like it. Lol

Is this how Tony D resurface head?
I'm thinking about bring my N42 head to http://www.davescylinderheads.com/.
I'd do that with the hire grit sand paper...or just go pay to get it cleaned. Lol which is probably what ill be doing.

Lathe Parting Tool
Glass plate with 600 grit spray adhesived to it, and plenty of marvel mystery oil with gyrations in the lapper's traditional "Figure 8" whilst chanting "tocheaptapaya, tocheaptapaya, tocheaptapaya" ,,, best done in a thatched hut under the influence of The Betel Nut...
yes!! Ill be laughing myself to sleep tonight.

Lol i was kidding.

Yes Nathan, Thanks for making me throw my Z in the trash...HA! Jk Well If I finish my 240z maybe I'll try my hands at a 260z
-
Hey...Whats this about the 260z being a better least hassle chassis?
-
She's going to be a sweet ride!

I used simple green, acetone, and then after those i ended up using paint stripper and air craft stripper with a paint scraper. I didn't want to use a razer blade because its really soft aluminum, even though Ive so many people using that method I don't like that idea, I'll keep at it though. Head should be straight though, that Im not worried about.
-
Would you run this?
-
So I've been cleaning this for about a week now, I soaked in hot simple green for a few hours, turning it on all sides to losen the dirt, oil, etc. I'm now wondering what is acceptible in the Z world as ready to be put back together? This isnt in anyway race track ready or anything, but even though you can still see old HG on here, its really smooth and flat. Is this acceptible to get my engine up and running?
-
love the egg white on that!
Right! It was awful. Had to get rid of it, She'll be british racing green at some point
-
OK I'll bite. This is a video of my 240z when I got her running 2 years ago...Before I took her apart to restore her lol. She had the original E31 block with a E88 head someone swapped out from the original e31 head. There is a huge exhaust leak and the carbs are shot, but yet she runs!

Well its dropping below freezing tonight, but I'm working a half day tomorrow so it should give me some time in the garage tomorrow. Damn cold
-
No problem Alex, it was nice having you come by again. Good luck with the parts selling and congrats again on the baby!
Thanks!
-
Ok I need to get this thread and ball rolling again. I'm putting a few items up for sale so I can either save up for the paint job or save up for rims or my triples set up. Anyways its been cold lately(not as cold as other Z members have to deal with ) so since I'm going to be a dad in the next 30 days or so it will be tough to get away from the baby and doing car work but I just need to get this body work done and then can send the car to get painted. I was working on a e31 head that I had at the shop but found a better one from another hz member(thanks again leon) so I'm putting the other head up for sale with some work already done to it. So hopefully I can get some more work done since I spent a few hours in the garage last night to get back on track
-
Sweet deal!
-
Congrats! Hows the little lady taking it...?
-
Thanks Alex! Sorry to hear about the dog, hope all is ok there. If you want to cancel the order, I can sell you some used valves from my E31 head if you'd like. I don't think I'll ever use them. Just keep plugging away, an hour here and there, and that Z will get back on the road!
Actually I do want to buy them! I'm on you.
-
The Z looks so good now! Really jealous... I ordered some valves from the Z store last week and they haven't shipped yet > the person im emailing says that they didn't have them in stock but the blah blah blah never sent them blah blah... so needles to say my head is still not done. I wanted it get it down before xmas but good thing I didn't since I spent almost 500 bucks on my dog at the vet : /
And I was really looking forward to continuing now that my car can only be driven once a week so I commute with my wife and drop her off at bart. Man I need a car lol
-
Lookin good!
-
It sounds like a good idea but man, people would thrash the s*** out of those cars! You'd have to have some serious insurance coverage...
Yeah, just let me know, she's all yours.
Yea i figured they would, but that woukd be a bad ass rental company. Rent the car of your dreams...20-40years ago lol
Yes.....i will have to explain to my wife how a running Z ud in tge driveway but it'll ve cool lol.

Yea I have always driven a auto for my DD, but now that I work closer to home and don't have a 80 mile drive almost everyday, im getting something that I can hit the corners on the way home to relieve some stress. My new job is very stressful and I im getting a little compassion fatigue/burned out in this line of work.
