  1. You can put an LSx in but both the auto tranny and T56 require at the very least a little "massaging" of the firewall. There have been some very nice drag times and power numbers reached using the VG30dett, it may be a heavy engine but it is tough as nails. However, it will cost you.
  2. You would obviously be better of starting with a TT if you want to go fast, but I knew a guy with a 100 shot(IIRC) and it ran like a low 13 I believe. Not fast but much better than stock. Now like any engine you can build the hell out of it and put a big shot on it but like I said before, the TT would be the better option.
  3. Steering rack bushings may be completely shot.
  4. I have replaced every injector I have by means of the dremel method and can replace any injector inside of 10 minutes now. I will say that if you still have the weak OEM screws in there it may be easier to pull it because they tend to want to strip out easy. I replaced all of mine with allen heads which makes a world of difference.
  5. Well I would start off with the lower compression pistons, and for your low HP goals you could put stock TT pistons in there. You will also need bigger injectors. You could use stock TT size but I would probably step up to the 555cc. Then you will need to have a custom tuned ECU, which shouldnt be a big deal since there are a good number of people out there doing that now. I would also look into either getting an aftermarket fuel pump or getting a stock TT unit(which would be more than enough). Thats about the bare minimum that I would do(that I can think of off the top of my head). I guess since you are converting it to a track car then you will be getting rid of the AC so you should have the space for your supercharger. Making up a bracket isnt too big of a deal. As for what you can get rid of.....As you said the EGR, you can get rid of all the water lines under the intake plenum, since you have a 90 you can get rid of the AIV system. You need to do alot of searching through twinturbo.net to get more info, they have about anything you need to know about a Z32 on there. **My Opinion** - If you are going to go custom then go big. 380HP is hardly worth your time and effort. Put forged internals in the engine and get yourself a P1SC at the least. I would think you would be good for 600rwhp. Also, doing something just to be different when it comes to cars is rarely a good idea. Most times its different for a reason, because most people found a better way to do it.
  6. Hard launches on sticky tires is what kills the diff./axles in most cases on the NA, and if you can keep it from wheel hopping(use subframe spacers or solid subframe bushings) then it can handle it even better. But everything eventually breaks.
  7. Yes i am very interested about what has to be done about the firewall/lower cross member. As much as I think having kits takes away from the people that went out and did it themselves maybe now I will get up off my ass and finally do the swap I have been talking about for 5+ years.
  8. No one, as far as i know, has mated the two and for good reason. The Z32 5-speed is a decent tranny but the t56 is stronger. If thats not a good enough reason then think about your gear ratios. The 1st gear on the Z32 tranny is geared for much less power on the bottom end. It will be completely useless with the LS1. After that you are pretty close through 5th but in the t56 you have that nice double overdrive which gives GM their very decent gas mileage figures.
  9. All of the swaps in the 300zx are custom so costs vary widely. If you are having someone else do it I would say you will be up over $10k in no time.
  10. I think that the passenger seat sits slightly lower, so you could always try to swap one of those over.
  11. This is true when you are talking about cars with transmissions like the T-56 in it but this is not true for the Nissan 6speed. If the gear ratios that 240hoke posted are correct you will actually be turning fewer revs with a Z32 5speed in 5th than with the 6speed in 6th. They use the 6speed just as greygears said, to have a gear advantage to make up for the lower power car. The T56 has a double overdrive, something like a .75 in 5th and a .50 in 6th. Thats why they can run at 1200RPM when doing 80 on the highway.
  12. http://www.importpartspro.com/niin.html Guy has been in the Z32 community for quite some time and has built some powerful cars.
  13. Definitely check all of your connectors and make sure your vacuum system was all hooked up correctly. Just go through everything one by one because I know how much of a cluster that engine is and just looking quickly over everything you are bound to miss the problem.
  14. A custom single turbo has been built on a Z32 but it was a TT engine. Like said below the NA compression isnt really boost friendly but it can take a little with the right tuning. I believe that Z1 used stock turbos on an NA engine years ago and made around 400rwhp and with the higher compression it had a little more torque down low than a comparable TT compression engine.
  15. Im actually really thinking hard about doing the same swap and yeah I really wanted to keep my stock tranny just to keep my driveshaft and tranny mount stock and since the gear ratios are about the same as the r154 I just dont see the down side. I know, have heard, that the r154 is superior in strength but i have seen the Nissan 5speed hold up to some very powerful TTs. As for the adapter plate I have yet to see one. BTW, have you seen this engine in a 300zx engine bay yet? I have yet to see it and would like to get a look at the space left around it.
  16. This is a little more my style, which i know is a bit overboard for some people......With the engine that far back im not sure he had to modify the steering rack or anything else down there, just a whole lot of firewall gone. http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=575048&highlight=300zx
  17. My concern was more of the fact that everyone that does this swap has to chew up the firewall because the T56 has such a large bellhousing compared to the Z32 tranny.
  18. Has anyone tried to adapt the Z32 tranny to the LSx engine on a swap? Ive seen some very powerful TT Zs that the tranny is still holding up on so im sure it could hold out for a basic LSx swap.
  19. Emailed them about the kit for the Z32 and as of now there is no such kit. They are currently looking for a customer willing to donate their car to do the conversion.... In my email it was noted that said customer would receive a discounted labor rate.
  20. Where are you seeing this.. I looked at their site and it mentioned a upcoming 350Z kit, but didnt see a Z32 kit. Personally i hope they dont.......I like the rarity that comes along with not having any idiot proof kits out there. Let the guys that are willing to do the customizing on their own be the ones with them.
  21. Yeah I havent seen that guy around in some time.....Every LS1/Z32 swap I have seen so far is completely different than the next on how they did it. My opinion is just have a go at it yourself, you dont need a manual. edit: apparently this guy is planning on making a kit. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=121463

  23. Ok I see you are from New Zealand so im really not familiar with what kind of engines you have to offer down there, but being a stones throw from australia I imagine you can get your hands on LS1s. This engine is far better than the Rover engine, even if the only advantage was pure displacement. I am/was in the same boat as you. I too own a NA 300zx and for the longest time I wanted to swap in the TT engine, which yes if built right can produce over 1000HP but that is a fully built engine including forged pistons, rods, cams, big turbos, big injectors, etc.... However, the TT engine is a real pain to maintain and is very expensive to modify since there are a very limited number of aftermarket supporters for the car. I am 99% decided to go the route of the LS1 in my car since it weighs over 100lbs less than tht TT engine and also give much much more room in the engine bay due to the narrow pushrod design. There is no set way, or kit to put this engine in the car though, so it is on you to make up some custom mounts and position the engine/tranny where you want. As for your comment about the TT engine being an NA engine with turbos attached.....thats not the case....There are quite a few differences...this post is one that was made up some time ago about the differences... http://twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=technical&msg_id=740530
