By running @ high RPM it is overheating on long trips. Is there a cheap solution to a LSD... Like a diff swap that is closer to a R-180 ratio?
I need top end. I cant change my tranny. And my tires are already 26" tall. What is the lowest gear ratio available???
-
Im currently running a TH-350 tranny and a R-200 diff with 3.90:1 gears.
I think its geared too high. It will launch in 2nd gear from a stop light
(because it doesent have enough drag to shift into 1st on a launch)
My top end speed is 90 at 5000 rpm. At 50mph its running at 2800 rpm.
If I change to the R-180 diff (3.33:1) will it be strong enough and give me the top end and still get off the line? Im running about 330 hp...

That is the sickest thing iv ever seen.... Nice job.

Im running a TH350 tranny. I filed down the datsun shaft at the end of the speedo cable so it would fit in the chevy tranny hole. It works and seals perfectly, but my ratio is way off... Im also running a R-200 diff with
3.90 gears... My speedo reads 95mph when Im only doing 55. What can I do to fix this? Is there an adjustment that I can make to fix this problem. Can I change the gear in the tranny? Its racking up the miles on my odometer... (not a good thing) Thanks for any input...

Well thanks for all the help, Ill try it and tell you how it goes....

The radiator was just flushed, the thermostat is brand new... I will try the duel fans (pullers) and a shroud. I think is just showed that it was running hot, because the temp sensor was between the 1 and 3 cyl...
But i dont want to take any chances.... I also have the functional fiberglass hood loovers (backward scoops) you can see the heat leave.
Will the 5 psi fuel pump do the job or do I need a bigger unit? It feeds a Q-jet 750 cfm. Will it starve at high rpm?
-
Will it screw into the chevy manifold? Would the header heat make the unit that hot? What temp should the z run normally?
-
Deja... Im using a 4 core copper radiator, Duel electric fans (pushers), and a 190 degree thermostat... Is the guage wrong? Or the sending unit? Is the headers heating up my temp sensor? It is screwed in between the 1 and 3 cylinders... I really need any suggestions...

Im using an aftermarket electric fuel pump, at about 5 psi... I dont know the brand...

My Z is running like a dog... (sbc carbed 350) Ill drive it for a few miles and it will cut out on me and die... There is ALOT of heat in the engine compartment. I poured some water on the inner fenderwell near my fuel pump, and it boils the water... I have a sheild between the fuel lines and the headers, but it still over heats the lines... Im guessing that the gas is boiling in the lines, and the fuel pump hits the air pocket and it kills the motor... If I let it sit for a while or cool it down with water, it will run fine. What could I do to solve this problem? If thats the problem. I dont have a fuel return line, and im running only 5 psi, (soon to be replaced with a 7-10 psi unit)...
How do I lower my engine bay temp? Or fix the problem?
****ALSO my temp guage says that it is running @ 210-240 degrees. Im using the stock 240 sending unit and guage. Is this normal? What should it read? Is it hot because the sending unit is next to the headers? Is it running hot, or is it giving me a false reading? What is the solution..
I really need help with this... Its keeping me off the road.. Thanks...

What motor mounts are you using? I didnt have to relocate my hoses. The motor sits low enough to clear everything, the hoses run between the intake manifold and the valve cover... Plenty of space...

Im running a 350 sbc w/votrec heads, Eedelbrock proformer intake, 750cfm Rockchester Q-jet carb, crane cam (not to aggeressive) HEI ignition, Bored 30 over, duel electric fans, Shorty block hugger headers,
2 1/2" duel exhaust w/ H-pipe, (4" chrome Tips exit in front of rear tires)-looks very cool, but low ground clearance... Tranny is a TH-350
w/ shift kit and a 2200 stall converter; diff is a R-200 w/ 390 gears (yes Im sure)...
I will send pics as soon as I can... Need to down load them into my computer from my camera... And yes Im looking for another 350, I have another 240 ready for one right now... (strictly Drag race). I could use all the hook-ups I can get...
Man these cars hall ass...

Redding is easy living... No one here has a v8 z that I know of...
-
Let me know how that goes... Is the straight 6 altinator enough for a sbc 350 w/ HEI ignition?
-
After 5 months, I was finally able to drive my v8 z for the first time... I have never driven such a fast car. From 30 mph I hammered the throttle and stepped the car sideways, leaving 2 lines of rubber... It was awsome.
My trip was cut short though, my altinator wasnt working, and at high RPM it cut out my coil... Killed my battery.... Ill send pictures of it soon...
Ill let you know the E/T when I get it to the track... L8R:rockon:

It did have a mechanical fuel pump. Before I bought it it was changed to electric... My distributor was 180 degrees off.( not my fault) Hence the backfire. thanks for the help...
-
Im supprised I got to 3000 RPM... he he he
-
I feel like a fool. The guy who previously had the engine had to remove the distributor to get the engine out. I trusted that everything was fine... He put the dustributor 180 degrees off !!!!! I didnt think anything of it until my firing order was mentioned... I put the engine at TDC and the dist. is firing on #6... Not #1... It runs like a scalded cat...
I still havent driven it yet, had to go to work (bummer). Ill have to shake it down and make sure it is street worthy...
Thanks for the help... You guys rock...

The coolest thing is having too much power... Nice...

Im lost... If its running lean Why does it backfire (flames) through the carb? Sometimes it blows flames out hte exhaust... Is it too big a carb?
-
When i hit hte 4-barrel ( Q-jet ) it pops and backfires... It idels and runs fine in 2-barrel... Whats the problem? Is the carb too big? Im running the 2.4L electric fuel pump, is it not enough fuel pressure? Is my timing off? We tried 3 different carbs, all 750cfm... Is the carb too big (sb 350)
I also have my down pipes glowing red hot!!! They are made of flexable stainless steel... is this because its running to rich or too lean? Can I wrap them up in header wrap... is the steel to thin? how does everyone else limit their header heat and under hood temp... Please help Im lost...
-
The Q-Jet is too big then? Im having big problems... When i hit the
4-barrel it backfires through the carb.. What is it? Im running an electric fuel pump from the 2.4L... is it starving for fuel? is it timing?

Ron.. Use 280xz REAR springs 79'-84' They are for a 3600 lb car (2+2)..
They are very stiff, they help in acceleration and handeling. its best to install them on front and back. It will purk you ride height right up..( good to clear headers and exhaust system) ... You can see the differance and its cheap to do. Trust me
-
Thanks fot the info... I will use the Q-jet and see what I get... Thanks again....
What a difference the right size carb can make

Kinda to go along with this thread, I thought id ask my Question.
At high rpm my engine is cutting out. Only when I stab it, or get on it too hard. Could this be because of my 750 Q-jet carb? Is it too much fuel at high rpm. Or is my coil saturated and not giving off enough at top end? Mild built 350...300hp
