i hear alot about the taurus fans...how thick are those things...as we all know there are problems with clearance...would that fan fit? and i assume it pushes some air? cause at idle i have cooling problems...although my new thermostat helped

does anyone have any experience with the high performance aluminum blade electric fans by perma-cool? (http://perma-cool.com/Catalog/Cat_page16.html) im doing alot of mods and upgrades to my z right now and i need to fix this overheating problem i have once and for all...my current fan is small and insufficient...are these fans any good? is the exposed blade design a problem? any info would be great. thanks as always guys!

all of these i think would work...how well does that aluminum stuff work...it looks like its for temp insulatioin...i want it as quiet as possible inside...i have a three inch pipe from the manifold so i want whatever will kill that and other sounds most...for a reasonable price...thanks guys!

i got a quick question...i need some kind of sound dampening material for my rear deck...i wanna be able to lay a sheet of rubber or sound proofing under the carpet in the deck to take some edge of my muffler and get rid of some rattling...anyone have a suggestion on a cheap substance or brand of sound proofing that i can get quickly?

definetly!

thank you very much! i think i got it working...as long as i can keep the two seperate components inside the lighter (pos and neg) from touching...then it works as a switch...the lighter doesnt appear to be heating up though...i changed the hot wire from gauge 18...which fried...to guage 12...which didnt...is the large guage lowering the lighter resistance and therefore keeping it from heating?...doesnt matter that much... thank you all...i just need to figure what guage to use and what size fuse...you all have been very helpful!!

sunmaster...im sorry...i dton understand...if i connect the ground to the slot where the 12v hot lead plugs in...then what do i connect to the relay?... please bear with me guys...im tryin!!
-
ok now were getting somewhere...so if i decided to sauder the lighter...exactly what...or how would i do that to lower the resistance?
-
ok...so what i need to do then is use a bigger wire...but if the lighter is a big resistor...is it going to transfer any power to the relay to get it to switch over and engage the starter motor? and it does generate heat...but i dont think its supposed to fry the whole wire...will a bigger wire solve the problem...or is the high resistance the problem?

i thought about fuel cut-off...and a switch on the ignition switch...but when i thought about installing the kill switch...i wanted something that would reset itself after i started the car...a lighter...a push button switch...something that i would hold while i started...and then release afterward...i wont remember to switch a manual switch back when i shut the car off... and as i was thnking about that...i realized that ignition switch...and fuel cutoff...would both shut off the car if i used the lighter or a push button because it would only stay active while i turned on the car...the only mechanism i can think of that can allow me to do what i want...and be very hard to hot wire...its a set up using the starter relay... i guess what i really meant to ask was can this be done?

ok...so my 1974 260Z got stolen the other night...and the cops returned it to me hours later...unscathed...i know...lucky...but anyway...i wanted to put a kill switch in it to deter theft and stuff like that...i planned on doing it in the cigarette lighter...i was gonna run a hot lead from the battery to the lighter...and then a ground out to the starter relay...push in lighter...start car...lighter pops out and reactivates the "kill switch"...i hooked it all up...turned on the car...and then tried to turn it over...when i did...the whole wire...all the way back to the battery...fried...so mch smoke i thought there was gonna be a fire...and the car didnt start either... so there is the explanation...now whats the cause... checked to make sure the lighter was 12volt...i have a 12volt inverter that works in it all the time... checked to make sure the hot lead idea was a good one...the power that passes from the battery to the solenoid goes straight through the starter relay...so there was no error there... the only thing left that i can think of is that 1) i used to small a wire... or 2) the lighter cant displace enough electricity to keep up with the amps flowing through the wire... now i know next to nothign about electricity...but i thought when the lighter was engaged...all it was doing was linking the wires connected to it...creating a complete circuit...and mimicing the setup that was there before i tampered with it... anyone know why this would happen...or how i can fix the problem? A friend suggested that the lighter wasnt 12 volt and that i would need a resistor on the battery side of the lighter...and a capacitor on the relay side...to make the circuit work...so i am thouroughly confused... anyone help?

im pretty sure the rad is good...and i probably need a new fan...but i never thought about my pump...see the problem is...i dont know anything about this car aside from what ive discovered...the guyi bought it from didnt tell me anything... Also, the other day i flew down the freeway to get my temp up, and then i got off and let my z idle till it got nice and hot. Then i popped the hood because i heard thats a good way to see if theres too much heat in the engine bay that cant escape, and there was no change in the temp...i think it was still going up...so i dont think putting a fan system or something in there would help much...but i could be wrong...im new at all of this... I suspect that getting a cross flow radiator with multi-cores would eradicate the heating problem, but of course i think of this after buying a new radiator. the flow goes straight down on mine, and i wonder if the coolant is getting enough time too cool off. Anyway... so my rad is new and functional, my hoses appear to be good, and i have a fan, but not the best...which means i need to check my pump, change the thermostat, and possibly get a bigger fan...its winter now, so she doesnt get so hot anymore, but i will tie up these loose ends, and then get back to you guys...thanks as usual for all of the suggestions...and sorry about the unusually long posts...

there is nothing restricing flow to my radiator but the ac condenser...i think thats what it is....and its in relatively good condition...and i dont have a clutch fan...i took it off to stop it from whacking my old radiator...i went through 1 radiator and two fans because my fans were hitting the top lip of the radiator...so i have an electric fan that i need to upgrade and a brand new radiator...it does fine at cruising speed, but when im doing start and stop or idling, it gets pretty hott...i need to change the thermostat cause it may be bad, but i was curious if my autozone guys idea was credible...

I know a guy that works at the local autozone and when i went in today to ask for a thermostat for my 260z, he told me that to fix my overheating problem, i needed to cut the thermostat and take out a washer and some other junk, ultimately causing the thermostat to stay open, but slightly restrict the flow of coolant, creating a slowly flowing, opened valve. Does this make sense? and if so, why wouldnt just taking the thermostat out work instead of this mod? He also said backpressure can significantly increase heat output or something. My muffler is seriously dented near the rear of the car, and i think it could cause a pretty good amount of backpressure, but could this be why my car is overheating, or even a contributor? thanks in advance

well the day i posted this...i went to kragen which is part of checker auto parts, and i was told they didnt have the part in stock, and that they couldnt order it at all...the people at my store are idiots...but i got one...thank you guys for the help

i decided to go to an electric fan for my z, but now i cant figure out how to get the fan clutch off. i tried to move the alternator over the belt adjuster arm to loosen the belt on the water pump and see if thats how you got it off...but my alternator wouldnt budge...im sure its really easy to take this off...but i dont know how to do it...and neither does anyone else i know...can anyone tell me how to remove a fan clutch on my 260z?

im lookin to finally put some electricity into my fan setup...does anyone know about how much clearance i would have if i took out my clutch fan to replace it with an electric fan?...i think i wanna put in a 14" fan, but i dont know what width i can allow in such a confined space...does anyone with a 260z have some fan sizes i can use? Better yet, would this one work? 14" Fan

alright then. thats alot easier than trying to figure em all out. ill trash em and get new ones if need be...thank you guys

this switch was under my dash within reaching distance of the driver, but well hidden...i think maybe it was a kill switch. but others say it could have been anything...it was disconnected when i found it though...theres 6 contacts on top...

i have a 74 260z, and i bought a stock replacement fan from Motorsport to fit in. Although i did notice that the plate on my door says my car was manufactured in september of 1973, the first month the 260z was made i believe...could that mean my car is realy a 73 and maybe im buying the wrong fan?? How do i fix this?

hey everyone...im new here, and i love it...theres so many cool people on here...i posted myself around the forums a little already seeking advice and i got it real quick...i look forward to being a part of the community, and i hope i can helpas much as everyone else does!

I need some more advice, this time regarding my fan. Basically, at high rpm's, or heat,(i havent found the cause yet), the blades of my clutch fan hit the radiator and bend backwards, stopping the fan from moving. The fan my z came with was shredded to pieces so i bought a new one only to find that the blade bent back a day later, so i cut an angle in it so it could still be used. I thought maybe it was the clutch. If it had gone bad it could be forcing the fan to spin too fast and cause the blades to warp into the radioator at high speeds. I replaced the clutch three days ago, and tonight i bent another one, and my peak rpms were only 3000. i dont know if i have an overly large, aftermarket radiator, a hot motor, a crap fan (aftermarket stock replacement), or bad luck. Theres only about 1-2 centimeters of clearance between the fan blades and radiator. I looked around but i couldnt find anything about this subject in these forums. Im just thinking about putting an electric fan in its place, but its a bummer after i payed $145 to get that fan clutch in quickly. Somebody please help!! Whats wrong with my fan!

those two switches on the right and the red one in the middle are the ones i dont know about...can somebody tell me what they do?...awtching them does nothing...i think theyre all disconnected...
-
ive looked everywhere trying to find out what these switches are...and ive only seen them on one other z...i have a 260z, and on my center console, right under my stereo i have an interesting assortment of switches. I have the regular defogger switch, hazards that dont work, and then theres the mystery switches: 1. Above my hazard light is a big red switch in a vertical position that looks like it has a light behid it (lights up when you switch it?) 2. A black switch that goes forward and back to the right of my hazard switch. 3. A Plastic switch that is the color of my choke light. It is disconnected right now, but i cant find what to plug into it. Does anyone know what these switches are?...i can prolly get a picture if them if that would help.
