    LOL, actually, now that I think about it, you can actually use a 2G Eclipse BOV as a popoff valve...they just refuse to stay closed at anything above 12psi and make it very difficult to build boost past that point...

  2. You're right, a Mitsubishi does indeed have a CBV, but it does not relieve pressure if the boost gets too high.

     

    The only failsafes Mitsubishi has for too much boost is fuel cut (feels like you've hit a brick wall!!)

     

    CBV's and BOV's are pretty much always plumbed into the intake tract between the turbo and the throttle plate, while pop-off valves are oftentimes plumbed directly into the intake manifold after the throttle plate.

     

    There have been a number of turbo cars built among the years that have not had a BOV. Archer Racing (6 time SCCA champion for it's class) never once used a BOV on their car from what I remember.

  3. No, you're thinking of a "Pop-Off" valve, which is a boost limiting safety device that opens under a certain pressure.. Some BOV's can be setup as a pop-off valve, but most of them aren't. BOV's are operated by intake manifold vacuum, rather than intake manifold pressure (although, there is really no such thing as vacuum, it's just a relative term to atmospheric)

     

    However, you are correct with your terminology of the CBV. Some manufacturers call a BOV a CBV, with aftermarket manufacturers referring to it as an actual BOV (HKS, GReddy, Blitz, etc...)

If you already have the 680's then they'll work, but 550's should easily work nicely, too (depending on how much hp you are actually going to be able to extract) and may end up being alot less expensive than the 680's (I figure about $400 for a set of 6 Lucas injectors, maybe less, though), of course, my figures are at the crank, so getting 400+ RWHP from 444's is pretty good!!

     

    Of course, if you're running a standalone, you shouldn't have any problems getting them to idle, but many people with other makes have had problems getting 680's to idle right.

  5. Maybe this concept doesn't apply to Z's, but...

     

    In a DSM, we're getting about 350hp out of the 4 450cc injectors that come stock in them. Let's drop that number down to a more conservative 300hp, though, to keep the injectors from being pushed.

     

    That works out to be about 75hp per injector at a duty cycle of around 80 to 85%. If we multiply the max hp per 450cc injector times the total numbers of injectors, which in a Z would be 6, we get a total potential horsepower figure of 450hp using 6 450cc injectors (easily within real world parameters)

     

    So, with that being said, I don't think running injectors larger than 550 would really be necessary, unless you were putting down at least 500hp, and they'd be alot easier to tune, and 450cc injectors can be found for practically nothing from many DSM'ers and DSM shops.

     

    ..and before anybody starts complaining about the referral to DSM's, remember, concepts usually apply to all engines equally.

     

    Of course, you know what they say about opinions, everybody has one and they all stink...or something like that =o)

  6. Contrary to what some people say, just about all "performance" turbos and turbo "upgrades" were designed for diesel trucks.

     

    Usually one thing that makes a difference is the turbine housing. It might be something like a 6, 7, or 8cm housing for a car, but for a diesel truck it could be something like 10, 11, or 12cm, which would cause way too much lag for a car.

    Ok, so this is what we *know* we can use to upgrade our Z injectors.

     

    1990-1994 Eclipse A/T injectors - 390cc

    1990-1999 Eclipse Turbo M/T injectors - 450cc

    2G RX7 turbo injectors - 550cc

    Mercedes injectors - 420cc (I'm not sure which models, but if you guys can tell me I'll be glad to put up everything I can find out on my site)

     

    I know the Eclipse injectors can be found very very cheaply.

  8. From what I've seen so far, you should be able to run Eclipse injectors (450cc/min)...these can be found for practically nothing. I personally have 4 sets laying around.

     

    Most of the time they get upgraded and tossed in the garbage, or some place close to it.

     

    If you can use the 550cc RX7 injectors in a Z, then you should be able to use the Eclipse injectors, since we sometimes upgrade to the RX7 injectors if we find them cheap enough.
