  1. I built a backbone chassis for my Z31. One of the main reasons for building it was to move the engine back and make it an integeral part of the chassis. The engine is set back about 4". The front and rear are Jaguar, It's really light, and extremly stiff. there are some changes I"d make if I were to do it again, but nothing major.

  2. I put a 350 in my '84 NA a few years ago,and it was a pretty easy swap. Of course the ease of the swap depends on your experience level. I fabbed my own motor mounts and rear cross member, and used a TH350 tranny. Going with a manual would be a bit more complicated, but not a lot. As for being able to clear a blower, I wouldn't count on it unless you dry sump the engine, or use a pro charger. Of course a Z31 looks really good with a cowl induction hood.

    Good luck on the build,

    Joe

  3. I often come across threads about wanting to have the sound of a certain engine. usually a BMW V-12 or an exotic Ferrari. I've been giving some thought about how I would like my car to sound, and in my fantasies it always comes down to the NOVI. Although I doubt there is any way to get the scream of that overdriven gear driven supercharger, I can fantasize can't I? My sbc is transitional, so hows for any suggestions? (Even though I realize most of you are too young to have ever heard a NOVI)

  4. I'm using motor plates too, but mine aren't nearly as heavy as yours. Of course I also have a rear plate. I know what you're going through with the alternator. If you find a solution, please post it up because the alternator mount is making me crazy. Its good to see someone else using a Vertex Mag, only difference is that mine has the external coil. post-249-048173500 1314652371_thumb.jpgpost-249-071053200 1314652254_thumb.jpg

  5. Hey, I love my 924, even though I do hope there is a special place in hell for whoever came up with the Lambda fuel injection system. My too fuh is tons of fun to drive even though it could use a bit more power. there are a few people that have solved the problem with LS6 Chevy's. What I'm saying is if those big old Chevy's will fit into a 924, they should probably fall right in to a 944. ;)

  6. Since I had to move my wipers when I moved the firewall, I have to use an oscillating motor. I have tried several rear window motors but they don't seem to be able to pull both wipers and the associated linkage. I've been thinking that I might use a stronger motor on a rear window gear box. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and also does anyone know how much power a wiper motor makes?

  7. Why would you swap a sr in a car that weighs 3000 pounds? it requires torque to move which the SR DOESN'T HAVE! at least swap in a torque monster like a KA24DE/E

whats wrong with the VG30? their great motors. why down grade to a 4 cylinder?

    Welcome,300zx,

Here are a couple answers to the quote: ;)

    1. Because that is the engine I have.

    2. Because that's what I want to do.

    3. Just show me the money then you can do it your way.

  8. I bought an '80 Porsche 924 for about $800, and its a blast to drive, and pretty good on gas.

all the VW stuff has me looking for pics of the Transporter I built in the early '70s. It was the fastest VW I ever owned, probably because I had gotten a good deal on a 180 hp Corvair Corsa. ;)

  9. Sorry to hear about your wrist problems. Just don't do anything rash about getting rid of your Z. If I were you, I'd have someone build me a really strong auto , and add a high stall converter. Just keep us all informed how you're getting along, and remember we're all behind you.

    Good luck.

    Joe

  10. It seems to me that all the sanctioning bodies have outlived their relevance. NASCAR with their car or the future (or what ever they called it) has basically turned stock car racing into spec cars. Right down to the brand tires allowed. Smokey Yunick must be spinning in his grave.

The NHRA has been going downhill for years. First there was the "Bracket" system where its possible to loose by going too fast. then of course they aklso mandate that fuel has to be bought from their supplier, not to mention the billet block rules for top fuelers. The whole system seems to be built on money, not racing. No wonder old timers call it No Hot Rods Allowed.

The IRL is no better than any of the others, Basically, the difference between the Indy cars is the paint jobs. Honda supplies all the engines, and the chassis are also mandated if I remember correctly.

The FIA has always been a PITA They seem to think it is their duty to outlaw anything that resembles creativity. If an innovation lets s racer win, instead of letting the others catch up, they outlaw the innovations. This can be seen in the way they killed the CanAm challenge. When Jim Hall became successful using ground effects,(the 2J sucker car) the FIA came up with a rule against movable them. The Porsche 917's were practically unbeatable, so the fuel consumption rules were changed to make them unable to compete.

IMHO, these sanctioning groups should control safety standards, but then just get out of the way. After all what is racing without innovation?
