  1. LMAO..... while I admire the spirit of that, it didnt do a darn thing to prevent 9-11. .

    It was never meant to. Why would you think it does?

    In my mind, the scariest aspect of torture is the slippery slope we find ourselves on if we use it and accept it's use.

    Now you are starting to see my point.

    From some of your comments in the threads about the patriot act and gitmo I will assume you are playing devils advocate here.

    We will never live in a world that is 100% safe from crazy people. Kind of foolish to even try. Eventually the fear will wear off and people will again realize they are at greater risk driving a car than being killed by a terrorist. When that happens we will fall back on system that has worked for us thus far.

    The constitution doesn't technically apply to non US citizens, but I don't see any reason why it can't.

    This is a somewhat academic discussion. Even the people who are asking “you have to wonder†are all saying they don’t support torture.

    Guess my Richard Jewel argument went unnoticed?

  2. Shoot. Any high school physics weenie could prove that mathematically;

    distance = 1/2 * (Acceleration) * (Time Squared)

    The fastest the car could accelerate is 1 G, with no friction of any kind.

    So the quarter mile time is

    time = sqrt( 2 * (5280 feet/4) / 32 ft/s^2)) = 9.08 seconds

    To run that time the trap speed would have to be 198 MPH!!!

    Not exactly competitive in pro stock.

    Add a little friction and cap the top speed due to wind resistance and Scottie could easily take it.

  3. If you draw an imaginary line straight out of the back of the transmission yoke and a second line straight out of the diff yoke, they should be parrallel. So if the engine and trans are angled slightly right to left, then that is OK as long as the diff is angled in the same direction. Same for the up-down angles.

    If the two lines are not parrallel, you will get driveline vibrations like said above. The drive shafts on a Z are relatively short and, because of the generally low (high numerical) rear gear ratios they spin at higher RPM's than a car with say a 3.08 rear diff. All of this makes the alignment more critical.

    You aren't screwed yet. If you did the JTR style trans mount, then you can easily slot the trans bolt hole in the crossmember to align the engine right to left if needed. Some washers in the trans or diff mount can adjust the up down angles.

    Get the car finished and see if you have any vibrations when accelerating at speed.

  4. But, given the above example and the hindsight we all now have, torturing Atta would have been the right thing to do.

    But if we had the hindsight we wouldn't need the torture. And without the hindsight, well, do you really think hooking Richard Jewel up to a couple of batteries would have solved the olympic bombing case any more quickly?

    There are better ways.

  5. He's right, actually. The 69-70 crankshaft (not fully counter-weighted) used to shake the clutches apart and were very unreliable. But even the fully counterweighted cranks used to be changed after each race because the would bend. The factory race teams would run qualifying with the crank from the previous race, then would put a new crank in before the race... So - Nissan used to win, but they had a very short life on some of the engine components.

    Well that's it. I am selling my 70 Z and buyng a Porsche.

  6. Not the mention the Krylon flat black on the bar cage. Or the ill fitting top and the copious surface rust on all the engine components? Or the hole full of wires where the radio use to be?

    Pictures can gloss over a lot. Might be a nice car, but I personally would have to see it in person.

  7. This has been discussed in many threads before. Some people feel the only correct way to relocate them is to actually measure the change in bumpsteer. That going "up and over" some fixed amount is only a shot in the dark and may not translate well to your particular chassis.

    For what it is worth....

  8. For that matter if the plug wires are on the wrong plugs the engine will be down on power.

    Make sure the carb throttle blades are opening fully, especially the secondaries. Pull the air cleaner, look in the carb and have someone floor the gas pedal (engine off of course). Are all 4 blades fully open?

    Is the engine otherwise running smoothly? No rough idle, excessive vibration, loud clanking noises, smoke? No oil in the radiator or antifreeze in the oil? Is the parking brake stuck? Can you easily push the car when out of gear? No slipping, i.e. do the engine revs follow the speedometer correctly? Oil level good?

    Might be worth taking the car to a diagnositic station and have an experience mechanic give it the once over.

  9. The cops aren't going to do anything. In fact, what could they do? They don't know who belongs to what and no crime has been committed.

    But the girlfriend. She can do anything. Women have all the legal power in these situations. It is her house because she lives there. Cut the lock off the door and don't worry about the alarm. Can't get arrested for breaking into your own house. Just tell the cops (if they show up) you can't find the key.

  10. Smog equipment I wouldn't worry about. There is so much low hanging fruit that the feds simply don't need to go to such labor intensive extremes.

    Stories of street kills, performance mods and posting videos of smokey burnouts are another matter. These things can come back to haunt you should you ever get in an accident where someone gets hurt.

    Remember the drag racing murder trial in San Deigo a couple of years ago?

  11. I know he is right...

    With no data, how do you know he is right?

    Because the car ads say so?

    And no, it isn't obvious that all new cars are safer than old cars.

    And even if they are, that doesn't automatically translate into old cars being "unsafe".

    Tell your friend to grow a pair....

  12. I paid $3200 for my 70 240. All original. The guy had just finished rebuilding it for his wife when she decided she wanted a bigger car.

    Fresh paint, perfectly straight body, no rust, rebuilt engine, 5 speed tranny upgrade, vented hood. The guy had a buddy who worked for a Nissan dealer. He had the guy replace all the weatherstripping, decals, dash and recover the seats. The only thing that was missing was the 240Z emblem on the glove box.

    Basically a perfect 240.

    Did I mention that was in 1989 in LA?

  13. You guys don't know when you are on to a good thing...

    Let's see... $1.21 per litre' date=' 3.7854 lt per US gallon, exchange rate at around $0.79 per Au dollar... That makes is ~ $3.61 per gallon in Australia.

    As my car only gets 23.4 Mpg... perhaps I should turn the boost down.[/quote']

    Now now. Don't start a panic here. There is no call for such extreme measures

  14. Definitely good news. Have wondered how you have faired since going away. Have missed your insightful posts. For what it is worth, your posts have more than likely not disappeared, they just can't be found by the search function. If you can find your old account, you can usually find the old posts under your user profile.

    Hope you can put your two year ordeal behind you. That kind of inner hostility can tear a man up inside. Maybe leave the battle for someone else to fight a while? God knows you have sholdered your share of the battle.

    Hope you regain your sense of Karma. Several months of Z therapy sounds like just the ticket.

  15. I was looking for alternative solutions to the external setup Tim has...

    Could always build a tank with Tim's bong built in or attached to the side. Has the disadvantage of two fuel pumps, but it should be absolutely bulletproof at preventing sucking air. No amount of baffles or trap doors can say that.
