4 1/2" speedo and tach. To mount I used a 5" abs coupler which I cut in half. At its mid point the coupler is ribbed and it is the perfect diameter for the gauge. The pipe fits snug in the dash.

Thanks for your help Ihiryu. I got my gauges earlier this week and they look great.
I'll post photos when I get to installing them.

When you turn the side gears in opposite directions, you're forcing them through the viscous fluid which is what makes the LSD work. It should feel difficult to turn. If you turn the pinion and it is hard to turn, then you may have a problem. You could pull the main caps off and remove the carrier and look at the bearings, but make sure you mark left and right and top and bottom and put the shims back in correctly. If the pinion moves smoothly I'd just install it and go for a test drive and see what it feels/sounds like.
Thanks. If I'm only turning 1 side gear does the diff act the same as if I'm turning both of them in opposite directions? Unless I'm missing something, it makes sense in my head that it would, and the pinion does move smoothly.

I've just picked up a diff from a 91 Q45. This is my first experience with a LSD and I'm a little concerned about it:
1) Turning on either output takes a lot of force. I can do it by hand, but it is tough. A lot tougher than any of the open diff's seen - is this normal?
2) Looking at the diff it doesn't look like the drain or fill plugs, or any of the bolts on the cover have seen a wrench in years. When I opened the cover there was hardly any fluid.
Nothing looks irregular inside (I think), but I'm worried that this thing is toast. Is there anything I can do to give it a more thourough inspection?

I've seen some pictures where the harnesses are attached to the strut tower bar. I have no idea if its against regs, or even strong enough. I just know that I've seen it a few times.

Supposedly Sumaru's has one, but I have been there 5 times now and not yet run into anyone competant enough to even sell me a plug. I am pretty sure I am done with that place. Seemed sketchy in the first place.
Ya I try and avoid that place as much as I can. I was there this summer and I needed a 280Z front wheel hub. First he brought a 280zx, then a 240z and then the third time I went back into the yard with his guy to point out what the proper hub looked like.
Not my favorite place to go, but sometimes I have no choice. I try and make a point to walk around pick and pull or karbashers every couple of weeks just to see if there are any Zs there and take everything I can if I find one (which still isn't very often)

Car looks like a lot of fun. I'm in Edmonton too, but I'm with Calgary (that just sounds wrong) and am running a turbo, I used to run the triple webers though. Let me know if you need anything. I'd love to see that beast.
Also, if you're around Edmonton this summer, you should pull the car over to one of the Z club meetings (or to one of the autocrosses) and show it off a little.

ah I didn't realize the 240 had a paper glove box. What a silly choice of material.

Ya it sounds like its the tranny to me. especially if the sound moves with RPM and not speed. I would try swapping one of the two 4 speeds you have coming and see what happens. It really doesn't take too long. I had a 5 speed in my car at one time and 5th gear went. The transmission shop wanted 800 to fix it, so I just put the original 4 speed back in. I like the 4 speed and I still get fairly decent mileage on the highway.
-
Wheel bearings are pretty easy to rule out. Jack up each corner and see if there is any movement side to side, or top to bottom with a good tug and pull on opposite sides of the wheel.
-
Forgive my ignorance, but is there any advantage to a metal glove box other than the all important look cool factor?

Got caught bringing the car out a little too early last spring.
-20C and about 20cm of snow.

does it have to be new/newer?
Im going to say a job 'offer' is not a 'job' untill you start getting paychecks. I would be weary of getting into a car I couldnt afford if my job were to disapear. You may want to take care of any student loans or credit card debt prior to purchasing a hot new car.
your in canada... why not buy a R32 skyline
I'd like newer. Not new.
Ya I agree. I'm not planning to go out and buy something next week. I'm probably not going to seriously look at anything until later in the summer so that I can have it for next winter. I'm just looking to make a list of cars that meet my criteria, and keep an eye open for a good deal. btw - I'm graduating debt free.
Because of all of the highway driving, I'd rather not have a RHD. I'd like to be able to pass on the highway still.

Why the S4? Could you expand please?
I'm not too concerned about fuel economy. Whatever I get I'm sure it will be far better than the mileage I get in the Z. I'd rather have something fun to drive, than something really good on gas.

Maybe check your spark plugs & do a compression test. Thats probably where I would start.
Does it backfire or just knock?

I've recently finished university and I have 2 job offers on the table. I'm pretty sure which one I'm going to take, but both jobs are going to involve a lot of commuting and my current winter ride just isn't going to cut it much longer.
Job 1 is a fly in fly out job, but where I would fly out of is about 500km away from where I would live. So about 1000km every 2 weeks.
Job 2 is about 80km away, but I would be driving everyday. So about 800km every week.
The 2 cars I have in mind right now are;
1) VW R32
2) Subaru WRX
Anybody driven either car? pros/cons? I have always driven a FWD car in the winter, but I've never had to drive that far that often and I'm thinking AWD would be a nice/fun feature.
Any other suggestions which meet the following criteria:
1. Good on ice and snow
2. Fast & Fun to drive (when its dry)
3. Preferably a wagon or a hatch (somewhere for the dog)
4. Comfortable to drive

Looks good Jason. I'm kind of partial to the old Konigs though.

+40 offset
not sure on the exact width of the spacers. They're pretty thick - 20 or 30mm.
They rub on the front of the wheel on the stock front roll pan thing.
I think a front air dam, or lowering the car a bit would stop the rubbing.
-
I'm running 17X7 with spacers and 215/45/17s. Car is the stock height, but the wheels will rub a bit when I'm backing up and really crank it a long way to the side.
-
I did my own rebuild, but I got all of my machining done at Best Engine Rebuilders (16081 132 Ave). They also did some head work for me.
I had Campbell Automotive (14631 119 Ave) balance a crank some time ago too.
Both did good work and were easy to deal with.

Have you seen this thread?

ya this project is kinda on the back burner until i decide this. Im thinking I want some kind of red accent back there but just dont know what i want to do. there will also be red accents on the doors, seats and like I said embrorded in the dash will be a red s130 nordskog gauges with red arms. so ye I kinda think there needs to be something back there
Red speaker and amp?

Its really easy to make one. Just get some new line and a flaring tool and you can re-use the original hardware.

It's a fuel gauge with the speedo.
The three pod gauges were a little more involved. I cut pieces of plastic to fit flat behind each of the holes, and marked the perimeter of the opening on the plastic. I found the center of the circle and used a hole saw to cut out the opening for the gauge. Each piece was then epoxied in place.
Here's the painted dash
