  1. Thanks you guys! Well... I'm proud to say that the registration is all finished up! And I've got about 450 miles on the car already. It runs pretty damn good for not having an ounce of tuning. The "unknown" trans that I purchased shifts perfect too. The car is a blast to drive! Handles like its on rails, and cruises around at 1100rpm at 70mph. Took it over to show my mom today and she made me stand for a few pics. :-)

  2. The process for registering the car goes....

     

    1. DMV to start the registration process. Need to have all receipts, Certificate of origin, and be early enough in the year to get one of the sequence numbers for SB100, and a lot of money to hand over.

     

    2. Make an appointment with the CHP for your car to be checked out and a VIN to be generated.

     

    3. Once you've got your vin, you can make an appointment with the Smog referee, he wants your sequence number, your vin, and then he will inspect your cars engine to make sure its got a closed PCV system. (which is the only emission that was required in 1965.) Then he will submit all the paperwork.

     

    4. Go get a brake / light inspection. You'll need to at least have your vin when you do this step, because they need to print the vin out on the certificate. So technically you can do this before going to the Smog referee, but you must have already gone to CHP.

     

    5. Go back to DMV and submit everything. Then wait for your plates to be mailed to you.

     

    It's all a huge pain in the ass, and I haven't even made it passed step 2 yet. I've got insurance barking at me to bring the car to one of their branch's so they can take pics of it. Meanwhile, my temporary registration tag has expired so I had to go back to the DMV to get another. But come to find out the lady behind the desk was in a bad mood today and will not give me one because I don't have my Brake / light inspection done. But she'll gladly give me a 1 day pass. Gee... Thanks! I better pass the brake / light inspection of I'll have to go back and visit this C again for another 1 day pass. But WAIT! I can't take it in for a brake / light inspection until I've gone to CHP and received my VIN, so it looked like I have to use my 1 day pass to go to CHP< then go get another to go for the brake / light inspection. :angry: :angry: :angry: :angry: :angry: :angry:

  3. Thanks guys! Don't worry, I'll get a video for you as soon as its worth of taking one. Right now I'm working on getting the car insured so I can drive it to get my CHP / Smog ref inspections, but its proving to be a difficult task. Can't get insurance without a VIN, Can't drive without insurance, Can't get it registered without driving it to get inspections. Haha

  4. Thanks guys! I actually have not been able to take it out yet. Originally I was going to take it out when the body was off, but it had no exhaust and would have been too loud. So I put the body on and decided I would take it for a spin when I got the exhaust finished. Now that the exhaust is finished, I already started putting the front end on but haven't finished that part yet. (Front end is loose and needs to be trimmed still) So I can't drive it around till the front end is finished. Looks like I'll be driving it whenever the car is pretty much finished. Which shouldn't be too much longer.

     

    And ya, its definately going to be getting some turbos in the future! :wink:

  5. Thanks guys!! I've been working my butt off on this thing and it seems to be finally paying off.

     

     

    Gollum - I couldn't agree with you more. So far on the Coupe I've put close to as much into it as I have on my Z, But the Coupe has WAY better brakes, suspension, chasses / frame, bullet proof rear end, Can fit any t ire under it that I want, Even has creature comforts such as... turn signals! and head lights that work correctly all the time. And high beams! Haha Oh, and I am also adding seat heaters as well. The original wiring on the Z was a nightmare, and half of the stuff didn't work. On the coupe, everything is 100% brand new (except for the engine / trans / rear end)

     

    I'm happy with my decision. :-) Should be an absolute blast when I'm finished.

  6. Got the ride height adjusted and measurement taken for a drive shaft. Also installed the Le mans fuel cap and connected the filler neck to the fuel tank. And that's about it. Put the seats back in to figure out where they're gonna go. I also need to figure out exactly where the body will sit before permanently mounting it.

    Are you gonna be in cbad in the morning? Theres a car show at the outlet mall by the 5 on Palomar airport rd from 7-9am. If you'll be there that early you should swing by

     

     

    I'll be up in Carlsbad in the afternoon for a soccer game. Probably won't be able to make the show. Anywho... If you're serious about coming down on Friday just shoot me a PM and I'll give you details and such. If you came Sunday, you could actually help with the install of the body. The more the merrier! But Friday works fine too.

  8. Ya I saw a guy on the FFR forum who was putting a SOHC motor into a coupe and he had to make clearance on the passenger side foot box. And everyone is also saying he will have to modify the hood. People swore up and down that I would have hood clearance as well, but I'm probably going to have a good 6 inch between the top of the intake and the hood. Should be fine.

     

    This Satursday I'll be up in Carlsbad, but will be working on it Friday and Sunday. Plans are to put the body back on. So I'll be at it all day.

  9. I just read through this thread getting extremely jealous, and then read that you were in san diego, and am now more than jealous. I absolutely LOVE the type 65, and have even made plans to Build one out of my terminator if it ever gets crashed (which is the first and only time ive ever been inclined to hope some retard would pull out in front of me in that car)

     

    Where are you at in SD? if you dont mind id love to come check out the project one of these days.

     

    Edit: on the topic of SC500 vehicles, i always heard horror stories of having to camp out at the DMV on new years to get them because they flew through them on the 1st, good to know they are at least lasting until February nowadays

     

     

    You know they say that the 03 - 04 cobra motor is too big to fit in these cars. They're only suppose to fit the 302's out of fox bodies apparently. But hey, people were also telling me that an LS1 wouldn't fit either. Guess I showed them wrong! You're more then welcome to come by the house and check out the project. I'm working on it just about every weekend, and even some week nights. I live out in El Cajon. Just shoot me a PM whenever you want to cruise by.

     

    I've heard horror story's about the 500 sequence numbers too. I was REALLY paranoid about not getting one of the 500 and having to wait an entire calendar year to get a shot at it again. But in August of 2011 I actually Called DMV in Sacramento and asked them how many they had left and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they had over 100 left!!! So I was confident that all would be well no matter what date I went in to start the registration process on mine.

    Oh ya!! That reminds me... Another piece of update info. I went to the DMV a few weeks ago and received the first piece of my, "kit car in CA registration" must. Because CA sucks, and only allows 500 kit cars to be registered on a calender year, The need to get to the DMV ASAP after Jan 1st is very important. I couldn't get Jan 2nd off of work so I had to go on the next available day off, which was roughly 2 weeks after that. Luckily for me, kit cars aren't as popular in CA anymore so I was roughly number 70 out of 500. And the last 2 years, they didn't even issue all 500 sequence numbers. So after I get it all completed my next stop will be an appointment with the CHP for a light inspection. Followed by a visit to the state referee for an emissions label. Then back to the DMV to submit all the paper work and get my plates. Pain in the ass process huh? Hopefully it will all be worth it.

  11. Palmetto - Thanks for the advice, I'm trying not to get too ahead of myself and rushing things. But things are certainly coming together well as I am almost ready to put the body back on the car.

     

    sq - Things are going pretty good! Soo much has happened since my last post on here that I don't even know where to start. I actually got the motor all fired up and running a few weeks ago, and am a drive shaft away from driving this thing around the block. Radiator and all the duct work in the front is finished. All the aluminum paneling is done. Interior is carpeted, seats installed, dash is done, All the switch's and gauges are finished. Today I painted all of the door frames and installed them temporarily before the body goes back on. Next week my goal is going to be to put the body back on the car.

  12. I have fought with oil pressure issues in my "old car" in the past as well. Here's what I would do, in this order.

     

    1 - try a different gauge

    2 - try a thicker oil / new filter

    3 - You can try a different oil pick up O-ring, but like Bigdeez said, its usually a problem that is found immediately after assembly and not something developed.

    4 - Remove the pan and inspect the rods / mains, If they're worn out they will cause the vehicle to loose oil pressure once warmed up.

     

    So on my car, one night I was at the track and everything was fine with the oil pressure. Then the next time I went to get in line to race I noticed the oil pressure was a little bit lower then normal while sitting there. But I just went and did the run anyway then went home afterwards. Next time I go drive the car, cold start the pressure is good. But as I continue to drive it, the pressure would drop big time. On my car I had a TH350 with no over drive, so when I was on the freeway the engine would be spinning 3k rpm at 60mph. I would normally have 50 - 60 psi of oil pressure at this rpm, But after the engine got hot the pressure would drop as low as 25psi on the freeway. And around town its gotten as low as 5 psi before. I ended up damaging the engine even more, and destroyed one of my turbo's. So I wouldn't drive it around while the problem is present. I had tried different gauge, oil, filter, new O-ring, and problem was still there. Once I pulled the pan and looked at the main journals, I knew what the problem was immediately. :-( Swapped in a new (used) 4.8L, and oil pressure was back to normal.

  13. Today I finally got to spend a lot of time giving the car some lovin! I pretty much got the engine and trans installed and permanently mounted in the car. Other things I finished over the past couple weeks are the pedals, brake components, and clutch stuff. (I have a functioning brake and clutch pedal now) I also welded up a Sump onto the stock fox body fuel tank, which was a huge pain in the ass.

    The motor sits very low in the car and has A LOT of room around it to work on it. There is a good 8 inch's between the rear of the cylinder head and the firewall area. A set of truck manifolds flipped to point forward fit on there no problem. And there seems to be a good amount of room on the sides where I'll be able to fit a couple turbos, I mean... Mufflers! :wink:
