  1. For all you engineers in here, I have a question about properly sizing a bolt in a joint (see http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7610/bolt.tif). The rod ends are connected to members that will be in tension, so they will obviously apply a load to the 3/8" bolt at their point of intersection with the bolt. I have analyzed the bolt for double shear. Do I need to consider bending stress in this bolt due to the fact that the points of intersection of the bolt and rod ends are not directly next to the alum. angle? Thank you in advance for any replies, I really appreciate it!
  2. Agreed. MIG > Flux core any day for auto body work. It is well worth the investment in a gas setup.
  3. I will definitely be rethinking the design. Thank you for the quick reply and the information. I really appreciate it!
  4. I'm sure a lot of guys here have experience with rod end selection, so I thought I would ask... For a project I'm working on, I need a rod end that will swivel so that the bolt will be at a 20 degree angle to the housing (instead of perpendicular to it). However, the diagrams on McMaster Carr are confusing me (see below). Maximum Ball Swivel Range6° to 22° | 23° to 35° I am not quite sure about their definition of the angle. Say for instance the rod end in question has a "ball swivel" of 6 degrees. Does this mean that it only sweeps 3 degrees in both directions (total sweep of 6 degrees) or does this mean that it sweeps 6 degrees in both directions (total sweep of 12 degrees)? Thanks for any input!
  5. Guilty as charged. We all make mistakes here and there, but my overall point is that grammatical errors are allowed to slide way too often these days (especially in professional situations).
  6. Yes I did that purposely. Yes, I believe it matters regardless of the stereotypical McDonalds customer. Maybe if McDonalds had it right, customers who may be less educated might have a chance to learn the proper usage. Anyway, McDonalds is a business and should conduct itself professionally (should be responsible for using proper English in all ads, documents, and so on). Well, I'm glad that other members here share my pet peeve and others related to using proper English. I think its great that many members have actually learned about professional writing and proper grammar here on HybridZ. Thank you to all of the administrators who have made it possible for members to get a free grammar lesson while learning about the great Z car.
  7. DING DING DING DING! We have a winner! Okay now for my rant: I see improper usage of "your" more and more every day. I am sick of it. Since when did it become acceptable to use improper English? Sure, sure everyone uses slang in everyday conversations. But, I have seen "your" improperly used in advertising and professional documents all over the place lately. I find that to be absolutely ridiculous. How many people had to give the OK on those advertisements or documents that apparantly don't know proper english?! Does anyone else find it annoying?
  8. This has to be one of my biggest pet-peeves... EDIT: Find what is wrong with this receipt (hint: it doesn't have anything to do with John's lovin haha).
  9. I agree with this bumper choice if you have some cash and can find them. Making brackets if you need to shouldn't be too difficult at all. Also, not to hijack the thread, but I agree with Dave's comment about your paint as well. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your Z painted, how much, what paint did they use, etc. PM me and let me know. It looks flat out awesome!
  10. I would like to contribute my share of complaints as well. Rain, rain, rain and clouds every single day. Yes, the lawn is nice and green, but it's beginning to look like a field since there hasn't been a dry day to mow it in well over a week. Plans for hikes, camping, or any other outdoor sports are shot. Maybe we'll get lucky and that big yellow thing in the sky will come back soon...it's been gone so long I don't remember what it's called... /end complaints The Weather Channel predicts sunny and 70+ deg for the 5th and 6th. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
  11. Are there any vintage Suzuki motorcycle gurus lurking around HybridZ? I picked up a 1979-1983 Suzuki RM60 for cheap that needs a piston and rings. The cylinder is intact, but the 1.0mm oversize (43mm total) piston that was in it is cracked. I'm having trouble finding a replacement 1.0mm oversize piston although I have found standard size and 0.5mm overbore replacements (of course the ones I don't need are the ones I can find haha). Does anyone know where I can find the part I need? If not, do I have any other options? Thanks in advance for any advice!
  12. Damn, I knew I should have gone to RPI. Wait, wait, nevermind. If I had then I would have had more debt in student loans than a new SS costs. Haha. Just messin with you. Anyway, that's awesome...how does it handle?
  13. I am currently an ME student working on a project and I need some EE advice for my electronics. I will be using two motors at 12V that draw 20A max and would like for both of them to be bi-directional. I would like to use a programmable (USB interface) motor controller that I have, but it is only rated for 1.2A max current. It's user manual can be found at http://www.pc-control.co.uk/images/Motor-Bee%20Manual.pdf and it's IC's spec sheet at http://www.pc-control.co.uk/images/L293D%20motor%20driver.pdf. I know that I will have to use the motor controller to control a transistor H-bridge circuit that will handle the higher current. The controller I am using outputs a PWM (pulse width modulated) signal and I do not know the frequency of the signal. I am trying to figure out what transistors to use in the H-bridge. Using BJTs would probably be simplest, but I've heard there are advantages to using MOSFETs instead. However, I've also heard that MOSFETs have trouble handling PWM signals at some frequencies (and since I don't know the frequency of the signal from the controller, this may be a bad idea). Can anyone give me some advice about any of this? Thanks in advance for any replies, I really appreciate it.
