  1. Thanks for the encouragement guys! I'm super excited to start gathering parts and get this show on the road!

My original plan was to do a 6.0 LQ4 engine and T56 but after adding up all the little stuff to make the LQ4 basically an LS1 set up I didn't see the value in it. New intake manifold, different brackets, harness, water pump, balancer, etc.... Plus I after doing some thinking I like the idea of shaving 85lbs off the front end to help make up for the weight the turbo, intercooler, and piping will add.

I'm going to order the pistons and rods soon. Some say you don't need them for my power goals but for about $1000 I can have a forged bottom end with a more ideal compression ratio. I've just seen too many boosted LS1's with broken 1st ringlands to not do it while the engine is out. I'm not going to go crazy with the rest of the engine though. The LS1 I'm getting already has the LS6 intake so I'll just run that. Im going to check the castings on the heads and if they aren't what I want then I'll be running some 317 castings with some upgraded springs and yella terra rockers. No porting of the heads this time. I didn't really feel like porting my LT1 heads was worth it in the end. Probably could have saved my money on that and done different power upgrades. As for the T56 I won't be opening that up either this time. Just going to get a nice clutch and roll with it. Haven't seen too many of these have issues so I'm not really worried about that.

  2. Why change the bottom end if your goal is only 500-600 whp? That's EASILY achievable with ~10 psi. On a good tune, that will live forever.

I honestly don't think it will live forever and I'm the kind of guy that likes to avoid problems if I can. Too many guys with FI LS1's seem to break the top ring lands so I'm a bit skeptical of what the stock motor can really take. Besides its cheaper and easier to just do it now when the motor is on a stand in my shop :-)

  3. Well the time has come for me to swap out the LT1 for an LS1. I am bored with the power that it makes and I don't want to spend money on the LT1 to make it faster. So I have been watching ebay for the past few months looking for a deal on an LS1/T56 drop out and I finally found one! $3900 shipped to my door for a 2002 LS1/T56 with 48,000! I haven't recieved it yet but its on the way. I am hoping to pull the LT1 out soon so I can start mocking up the LS1. Plans are for an LS1 with flipped truck manifolds(personally Im sick of header leaks and the manifolds have supported 1000HP so they wont be an issue) and a single turbo. I am going to put forged rods and pistons in the LS1 and drop the compression down to 8.5 or 9.0:1(somewhere in there). The goal will be 500RWHP for the street with 600HP for the track! I want a monster and this should do it!

I wish I could post more but with a full time job and starting my own automotive repair shop Im too busy to browse the forums as much as I would like. I'll be posting pics and info as I go along in the project though!

  4. Well I finally had enough time to work on my car and get this thing built...but its not working as I planned. I ended up having a friend weld up an alluminum tank and put some fittings on it. The tank is about 1.6 liters. I used the Tsunami high pressure pump and a mallory 15psi pump. I think the 15 psi pump may be causing the malfunction that I'm having but I'll take any other ideas...

Problem is that I can only build 30 psi of fuel pressure. I have the low pressure pump feeling the surge tank, the return line dumping into the surge tank, a line from the surge tank acting as a return line for the surege tank, and a line feeding my high pressure pump. I also have a check valve in the return line so that fuel from the surge tanke doesn't go up that line. I am stumped at this point, I figured the check valve would fix this but after installing it there was no change. I have tried adjusting the regulator but that hasn't helped either. It almost sounds like the high pressure pump is aerating but I find it hard to beleive with the surge tank feeding it....

    Anyone have any ideas?

  5. Im trying to avoid a custom fuel cell at this point. I like being about to use my filler neck to fill up so I'm trying to avoid a fuel cell. I think I am just going to have a buddy weld me up on out of alluminum. Im getting some rough dimensions tonight and then Im going to give them to him so he can have a look.

  6. After installing a new Aeromotve Sunami fuel pump early this spring I am now running into fuel cavitaion in my fuel pump when I do donuts and when I run the tank below 1/4 of tank. This pump flows way more fuel that the MSD pump that I replace so thats why I didn't have the problem before. I bought this pump because I'm going to be swapping out the LT1 for either a 5.3 or 6.0 chevy sooner than later. I can't stand the LT1 and I'm bored with the power it makes! So the Gen 3 V8 + turbo will be a near future project!

Anyways, I know a lot of you are running fuel surge tanks but where are you getting them? Summit doesn't seem to have them listed(or I can't find them...) and all of ebay's stuff is from Hong Kong or Australia(I'd rather buy from the states if I can to avoid any shipping issues).

    Thanks!

  7. And I thought I was the only one with this problem! I did my intake 2 times before I finally got mine to seal up in the rear. I was at a local speed shop shooting the **** with the owner and I asked him if he had issues sealing them up and he said "nope not since I started using "Permatex Right Stuff sealant" He swears by this stuff. I didnt do anything special when installing it. Just layed a nice THICK bead on the block and a little under the intake gaskets and a little on top of them(where they meet the block) and torqued it down properly. My leak is 100% gone finally!

    Permatex # 25229

I got it at fleet farm. It comes in a areosal can with a tip to direct the sealant like a caulk gun.

  8. Wow I don't know when the board format changed but I think I like it! I don't remember when the last time I logged in...

Well an update, I did get the hood fixed finally in late October. If you don't know what happened, my alternator "blew up" and sent the metal cooling fins through the hood. I ended up getting the hood welded. The body guy did an amazing job! You can't even sort of tell on either side of the hood that there was a hole there! I debated going with a fiberglass hood or a carbon hoon but I don't really care for the shrinking or expanding of FG or CF so I just had it fixed. I also had my spoiler redone since it was pealing up after 2 cold winters in wisconsin sitting in a garage, atleast thats what I blame it on. The car is now sittin in my heated shop all winter with the thermostat set to not drop below 50*F :-)

The other big new is I started my own shop. Some of you know that I am a mechanic for Nissan by trade. I started renting a 1500 square foot shop in September and have been busy buying tools and trying to get the word out that I'm ready and willing to do work! I have always wanted to run my own shop and this is just the first step for me. Right now I work after my 8-5 job at Nissan. Some nights I'll work till 12AM or later. Its a lot of work but getting a good customer base before I go out on my own is my first priority. I can't wait to stop working for the MAN! Being my own boss and getting all the profit is so much nicer! I am setting up my LLC(limited liability company) this month and with the way things are already going this year it won't be long before I can quite my full time job and do this full time. It's amazing how much happier people are paying $40/hour vs the dealership $93! Not to mention the rediculous parts mark up!

I don't have much planned for the Z this winter. Maybe clean up my A-pillar gauge pod and deffinetly fix the problem that drains my battery after 5 days (pretty sure thats my clutch switch thats wired to a relay hot all the time).

So what have I missed in the last 7-8 months?

  9. Well its a spring loaded auto tensioner. Installation is straight forward...2 bolts hold it on. The only thing that was weird was that some of the fan blades on the alt. were bent forward when I went to do the tensioner? Not all of them though. They weren't hitting anything but they were slightly bent forward away from the alt? I have no idea why though. I didnt think much of it and just bent them back.

I have State Farm as my insurance company. And I have classic collector car insurance on it. I don't think it made a difference though. They called the claims adjuster and told them what happen and they said it was covered. Wasn't a big deal to them at all.

  10. Well good news my insurance company is going to cover everything but the alternator and belt. All I have to pay is my $100 deductable! Now we just have to find a hood since one from Nissan isn't available anymore. Im hoping we can just tell them that I can get a hood from a company out in CA(JohnC @ Betamotorsports). They are the same price as a new hood from Nissan if it was available.

No the alternator was not touching the back of the valve cover. The cover is notched for the alterantor though(factory).

I actually just put a new belt tensioner on last week with a new belt(bearing was noisey). All seemed fine and noise was gone. Never made a single noise before it blew apart. The case on the alternator is broke in half.

Not sure what brand the alternator was, it was a remanufactured though. I put in on the car over 2 years ago.

And it depends if I get a hood from John or if I get another non turbo hood weather or not I keep the hood vents.

  11. Yeah I've been turning wrenches professionally for 7 years and I've never seen anything like this. Looks like about $600 for a fiberglass hood from JohnC @ betamotorsports. I hate hood pins but I may have to go with some for the rear of the hood if I decided to buy this hood from John. I don't know how repairable something like this is? I'm going to get an alternator and new belt for this asap and then take it over to my painter and see what he has to say.

I just a can't seem to make it through a summer with out something going wrong with the motor. Last year it was OPTI spark issues and my steering gear box seizing up!

  12. So there I am driving out to my parents house in the Datsun to watch the house like a good son while they are gone, when all of a sudden my alternator decides to EXPLODE! Yeah it basically broke in half and then the cooling fins went through my god damn hood! Awesome! Time to upgrade to a fiberglass or carbon fiber hood I guess.....

Pretty much had it with this motor set up. If its not one thing its another with this god for saken LT1.....:x

  13. Im not great with numbers but that's not why I got it. I could have got a big tattoo of a z car or something but that wouldn't explain my love for all fast cars enough. I am a very technical person and I love fast cars so I figured something that was more on the technical side would show that I'm more into doing things the right way and not just someone who throws a car together and it goes fast for a while....that's how I look at it anyways! LOL :-)

  14. Well I turned 27 on Saturday and I have really wanted a tattoo for some time so I figured I give myself a Bday present! So on Friday me and 3 friends went down and watched me get my first tattoo!

I think its highly appropriate for me!

P.S. I know I haven't been around much this summer but thats because I haven't had any issues with my car so I've just been lurking! Feels weird just being able to drive it when I want! Almost like its not a hybridz and I just bought it like a new car! LOL
