  1. Slave cylinder is none adjustable. The master cylinder is. The suggested bore size I have seen here is 13/16 and the car has a 3/4. You'll have to crawl under the dash to see the adjusting rod between the pedal and the master cylinder. Don't remember exactly but you might have to loosen one or two nuts and then turn the rod or just turn the nuts and then re-tighten. I'm guessing the lock nuts are loose and they turned by themselves. Another possibility is that the pressure plate and clutch disk are stuck. That sometimes happens when cars have been standing around for a year or two.
  2. Thanks for the site. I'll check it out this afternoon. Louie.
  3. That's exactly what I'm asking. I know that the 200 has a mechanical speedometer connection so my question is "Does the 700r4 also have provisions for a mechanical speedometer gear." Do I need a special drive gear or assembly or do all 700 transmissions have them. I don't have a transmission right now so the real question is "which overdrive transmission should I look for." I'm looking for ease of installation and cost/avialability. I would go for a 200 but they are harder to find then a 700(at local salvage yards). Louie.
  4. I know that this topic has been covered several times but I would like the avoid the several days of reading. I don't know how to narrow the threads down. We are building a second 260Z and this time we are using an auto tranny. My 7th edition JTR manual doesn't seem to cover my question relating to speedometer connection. Do all 700-R4's have a speedometer connection. I thought some had a speed sensor. I just ordered the speedometer cable from JTR on the last one (5 speed manual). I would hate to have to get an electronic speedometer. I will use a 200R if I run across one but 700's are more available. This Z will be even lower performance(305) so any tranny should be adequate. Any info here would be appreciated. Louie.
  5. I guess I've got the slowest Z. 74 260Z, 350 4 bolt block, .030 over, not sure of the cam specs but it's a mild crane cam, dished hypertuetic(can't spell or pronounce that) pistons, factory aluminum intake and a camaro 5 speed tranny. 15.50's The driver was somewhat of a novice and he was trying not to break the car since he didn't really have permission to take the car out. I think the shifting was part of the problem but the skinny 14" tires are probably another. The carb has also not been really working right. I think mid 14's are an easy possibility but that's about it without making some major changes. Louie.
  6. Thanks. I'll look for a gasket/moulding first and then start calling for a windshield. Louie.
  7. Anybody know where I can get a windshield for my 260Z hybrid. Body is all stock. Are windshields readily available at glass places? I'm in the San Antonio, Tx. area. Louie.
  8. We still have plenty of work ahead. I do have the new driveshaft flange so I'll have a new driveshaft made in the near future. I found out the day after the drive that the driveshaft bolts were only finger tight. Luckily they held. The clutch was adjusted and we are now able to shift. I haven't been back in it but one of my students took it down the road and he came back with a huge grin. He adjusted the clutch some more and then ran out of gas on his next run. he did manage to coast back in. We got into some minor troubles at work so it will be a few days until we can get back to it. I'm hoping to make it a daily driver. We have pictures. Maybe I can figure out how and where to post them sometime soon. Louie.
  9. We've been working on my 260Z for quite a while but the project had been dormant since April due to sevral other projects. I decided to start the year right and finish this car soon. Every day we have been working at least a few minutes and getting little things done. The engine is a early (60's) 4 bolt 350 block. According to the numbers it's also the same block as the 68-69 302 Z-28's. It went through a low buck re-built and we used the early 327 "camel-hump" heads and a Camaro 5 speed. Nothing high tech and all low dollar. Even so we probably have 2200-2500 bucks in it. (the entire car) Patience finally went out the window and we decided to take a sort drive in it even though it still has a few bugs. The clutch may not be adjusted right or it needs more bleeding but we do not have a good pedal. We used the recommended master cylinder but later I read here that most of you were using a bigger one. Oh well. I still had to go for a drive. We turned the starter and it started up immediately. It ran lousy and it took a while to figure it out. Turn out to be a bad rebuilt quadrajet. We had a edelbrock laying around so we installed it and everything smoothed out. The cam has a fairly mild lope and overall the engine sounds great. We have a home built driveshaft with the little ujoint that will be changed soon but I still had some fun. It could spin the skinny tires in second gear with ease. Overall it was fun and easy to drive. I wondered about the lack of power steering but I don't think it will be a problem. I will take some time now and iron more of it's bugs before I take it out on a real drive. I'm quite happy so far with the results. I can imagine you guys with the LT1's and stronger engines must really have a ball but I am quite happy with my results so far. Louie.
  10. Making the tranny mount is tough. A machinist nephew made all my mounts except for the tranny mount. We used a torch to heat and shape the piece but I'm not very happy with the results. looks strong enough but it's not as professional looking as the rest of the pieces. I think spending $55 from JTR is not a bad idea. Louie.
  11. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but aren't all chevy small blocks internally balanced except for the 400. I pulled my from a 305 camaro together with the 5 speed. It bolted right up to my 350. It's a work in progress so I don't know how it's going to work. It did come with the 10.4 inch clutch. Louie.
  12. I've been aquireing parts slowly and I'm almost ready to start my low budget chevy swap. I'm using the JTR book. So far I have gone by the book. It's going to be a mild 350 with a camaro 5 speed. What did most of you guys use for a drive shaft. I noticed the manual suggests using chevy u-joints and they have a flange available. Did anybody use theirs or did you have one made? How about the speedometer? Do we just use the cable avaible at JTR?
  13. I've taken the plunge and I've started on a 74 260Z. I'm still reading the JTR manual but I have started some work and aquisitions already. I've bought the recommended stock cast exhaust manifolds and a machinist nephew is doing all the mounts and brackets for me. The manual covers a lot of stuff but I still have lots of questions. Any help would be really appreciated. What 5 speeds are available? The manual mentions S10 transmissons(4.3). Is anyone using that. What about the clutch master cylinder. The manual mentions a specific one. Does anyone know where I can get one or one similar. All I have here is NAPA. I have more questions but I need to read more just in case my questions are already covered. My conversion is low budjet and the engine will use old tech. I have 194 double hump heads and I will probably go with flat top pistons for more compression on my 4 bolt block. I'll probably use a stock cam or something very mild from Cranes econo cams and the smallest 4 barrel carb I can find. Carefree cruising is my main objective. Thanks for any suggestions. Louie.
  14. It seems like everyone's happy with the Z-8s. I guess I'll continue leaning towards the V-8. I hope the manual gets here soon. I need to start looking for a tranny. Any opinions on the 200r4 over the 700r. Remember this will be cruiser with AC, not a strip monster. Louie.
  15. How is the steering without power steering? I don't remember it being too bad with the original L six but will the added weight make it that much harder. The Z we're building with the 280Z engine has a smaller aftermarket steering wheel and it's a little stiff but not to rough for me. The other one has the original wheel. My wife used to drive a stock 73 Z without any problems. How much more difficult is the 700r transmission installation? Is all this covered in the JTR manual? Thanks for your replies so far. Louie.
