  1. i'm also looking into microsquirt on my 280zx. have any of you heard if these work well or is it just easier to assemble a megasquirt system and go from there?
  2. well i hooked everything up, turned the key over and nothing. After dipping my head inside the driver compartment i noticed a electrical burning smell.... and you guessed it... it was from my ecu. So i assume i'm completely screwed now, this car is giving me a crazy headache. I'm about 99% sure i have a 83 ecu/harness. Would it be easier to just locate and buy a full 81 harness/ecu setup to match my engine and it's cas or say the hell with it and go megasquirt?
  3. on my harness i have a brown wire and a blue one that plugs into the ignitor. I assume they are the same thing yellow and black, just different colors.
  4. to start off i've searched this up and down for the last week and only found 1 diagram that helps and i have all the wiring breakdowns for 81-83 zx's. I have a 83 n/a 280zx that has a 81 turbo motor in it and i can't get spark for the life of me. I'm using this as a reference point. http://strausz.us/zcar/turboswap/my_schematic.tif My big problem is that i'm not sure if i have to use the existing wire harness from the n/a coil setup or bypass it and run it from scratch. i currently have my y/w and yellow wire from the turbo ecu harness ran and there is a lone blue wire from the n/a setup by the ecu that had a male female hookup and it's ran to the coil. Am i totally missing something here or could somebody walk me through it? It's frustrating me to the point that i'm ready to quit or just sell the car. any help would be much appreciated.
  5. which iat sensor do i need? there is 3 or 4 of them. Thanks btw. I really appreciate the help
  6. I've had nothing but wiring issues with my 83zx that i just dropped a 81 turbo motor in. I was thinking about going megasquirt after reasearching alot and was wondering if this kit had everything i needed in it. megasquirt ebay kit. thanks in advance!
  7. ok, after poking around some more i may have found an issue. My engine has the crank angle sensor on the front of the engine and my harness is a 82-83 style where the distributor has the crank sensor in it. Am i gonna have to get a 82-83 turbo dist and remove the cas on the front of the block or is there a way to wire all this in to make it work?
  8. tyvm! i'll give these a shot and check back. Also if i get it working I'll draw up a wiring schematic and toss it on photobucket.
  9. the closest they can come to my car is the 78' and i own a copy of that fsm. Anybody else have an idea or am i just better off locating a 81 harness.
  10. To start off.. I have a 1983 n/a 280zx with a 1981 turbo motor installed (cas bolted on front of the engine) I got a turbo harness for the car, installed it but i'm running into alot of issues and none of the writeups that i've found seem to answer my probs. I figured i'd ask you guys before i started hacking wires and probably screwing something up. Alot of my wire colors are different than the writeups i've found and pretty much all of them have a 6 prong ignition harness and mine has 8. Also for example most of the instructions say to look for the black / white striped wire near the yellow one on the ignitor but nothing matches color wise on my harness. I'm assuming i have a 82-83 harness and ecu.. Are there any threads i've missed that may help me? This is really starting to get under my skin lately and I really want to get this finished. Any constructive responses would by much appreciated.
  11. yup, everything fits all hunky dory.. i'm a smidge discouraged atm but at least nothing blew up.
  12. Well after poking around i'm pretty sure i figured out what it was. The turbo motor was an auto setup and i removed the flexplate off the block but there still seems to be a shiny spacer thats sitting between the crank and my flywheel and that wasn't the case with my n/a 5 speed setup. am i right here?
  13. Ok I am using a completely stock turbo block, a 5 speed tranny from a 83 280zx 2+2 n/a and my stock flywheel from the n/a. Everything is in the car and hooked up and when i try to start the car my starter will kick out and spin but barely catch the flywheel and just grind on the edge. I'm using the starter from my 83 n/a and i didn't think there was any real difference between the turbo on and it. Anybody have a clue whats going on here?
  14. everything is the same on the car and i have access to the loom, ecu and complete engine. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.
  15. I ended up finding a full turbo motor for my car in a junkyard for 300 bucks. Finally found the specs on that engine and they are rated for 160hp. I figure the turbo swap will be 100% easier, alot less custom fabbing stuff + more horsepower.
  16. I have a n/a 83 280zx that i've been thinking about doing a 302 swap on for awhile. Today i found a running 302 with tranny for 50 bucks that a friend wants to sell but that catch is that it came out of a 84 marquis, isn't the HO version that stangs have and I've read that these are a clunky v8. Any truth to this or should i be ok to do the swap? I don't care about my car being god awfully fast, I just want the v8 power because the motor in my car drives fine but is showing it's age. Anything you guys tell me would be much appreciated.
  17. I have a 83 280zx non turbo 2+2 and i'm changing the clutch out of it. So far it's been a nightmare because oreillys and car quest keeps ordering the wrong kit for my car since it uses the 9 1/2 inch disk. The store i ordered it from got a clutch for a 83 280zx turbo, will that fit my car since the 2+2 n/a version has the larger flywheel? Everywhere I look the pictures of the larger clutches are identical and I figured it would be a good idea to ask you guys before i drove 50 miles to pick it up.
