I picked up a 1982 N/A 2+2 5-speed a couple months ago. Bought it after looking at pages and pages of ads for Beemers that just looked like too much trouble. I figure if I'm going to go through the hassle of owning a car, it might as well be something with a little character.
Picked it up from a retired USAF mechanic/shop owner that restores Z's as a hobby. He had the Antique tags put on it; I've registered it for daily driving since then. It needs a new transmission, but its drivable in it's current condition until I can schedule time for it to be in the shop. I think I'll wait for the weather to warm up a bit first. In the meantime, I'm reparing things as I find them... valve seals, shorted light sockets, injector gaskets. The small stuff. The clearcoat is trashed, but the paint underneath is in fair condition. The interior not in horrible shape for a car with 25-year-old leather seats.

I'm fortunate to have a dedicated Datsun/Nissan shop in my humble city.
I also own a 1981 Honda CB750 Custom with less than 20,000 miles that I picked up over the winter that has yet to be put on the road. That's an entirely different can of worms.
And a wise choice it was!!! These cars are great daily drivers with a good blend of ride quality, handling, power and ease of maintenance. I'm using my 77 280Z as my daily driver for this summer.

I use a company car for back and forth to work, but for all of my other normal driving this year I'm using my 77 280Z.

This is the only front air dam that I have seen that flows into the ZG flares and it's a custom build. I would also love to find one that could blend into the front flares.

Very interested, could you go into depth on what grit and hand or power tool polish? I have some western turbines that would look awesome polished.

Came across a pic of the car I was referring to.
Looks unfinished. Maybe if they were the flares with the hidden fasteners and painted to match the body?

Considering the zero feedback of the high bidder, its still not going to sell.

...Beautiful car! It looks like it is in such great shape that I wouldn't do anything to it other than maintain it. It still amazes me that this car sold for over $17,000 when new. Good luck with it.
Thanks for the compliment. Its going to stay just the way it is. I recently bought a 77 280Z that should satisfy my need to modify things.

I've seen cars in worse shape brought back to life. Indiana has some of the same problems as your area when it comes to rusted Z's. Just take your time and do it right the first time.

I bought my 81 280ZXT at the beginning of last summer. Flew to New Jersey and drove it back to the midwest. One owner, turned 70K miles on the way home and still has the original floor mats. Now its a sunny summertime driver only.

At first I guess it will only be the before shots. My 81 280ZXT goes into the body shop on Monday for a complete repaint. It is staying the factory color and the only change is replacing my slightly damaged front spoiler with a MSA Type I spoiler. I'm also replacing all of the emblems on the car with new ones. Hopefully in a few weeks I can also post a body shop recommendation.
Both sides had minor rust on the top of the wheel well on the front fenders. The previous owner took a welding class at a community college and decided to attempt the fix himself. Not a bad job for an amateur, but not what I wanted out of the car. I have two new Datsun fenders that are going on it. Passenger door has a small dent from a parking lot bump that also occurred before I bought it last year.
Front spoiler has been banged a few times and is rusting in a couple of spots where the paint was damaged. MSA Type I spoiler will replace the stock one.
Fender on this side has the same problem as the passenger side.
Should be done in about three weeks and I'll post the new pics as soon as I get her back.
