  1. well my latest Z is the 73, which I got a month ago. The 350 was my 5th Z, the latest Z is my 6th. Actually, the experience most of us 350Z owners have had is that the older Z owners don't accept us as true Z owners. I know of at least 4 people who have not renewed membership in the Georgia Z club due to the attitudes of early generation Z owners. That is changing now though, as the 350 gets more established.

That’s an interesting point of view that few would consider. Thanks.

  2. Dear Abby:

I made my Fiber glass hood in the mid eighties and it has managed to accumulate three paint jobs since then. Ten years have passed since my last paint job and I feel it is now do for a repaint; however there seems to be the necessity to remove all these redundant layers of paint.

I have fallen in love with my heat gun. It has stripped away paint on far more projects than there has been time to repaint. Rust runs rampant.

My question is: Can any one see a problem with heat stripping a fiber glass hood? I know chemical stripper will work but I fear it might disturb the integrity of the gel coat underneath.

  3. Ya I have found the Poarche crew to be a pretty decent lot. A few times I have been past in a corner or past them on a straight and the reaction is usually a thumbs up or something positive. There are definitely good relations between the two marques.

  4. I tracked my shakes down to a loose lower joint assembly in the steering column. It was noticeable by a mechanical feel in the steering wheel. This was after I tried all the usual suspects, tie rod ends, balancing and a thorough ball joint and rack inspection.

  5. Totally agree. Machining always takes ten times longer than you'd think. I resort to machining when I have no other choice. And that's probably why I'm so slow at it. But I have a friend that is very good and anything machine still takes a long time. Even fancy CNC tools are not as quick as you might think.

Same here. One hour to set up the machine. Two minutes to make or break the part in it.

I think a CF bar would look nice. It would be a good area for experimentation because life goes on if the bar fails.

  6. headers.jpg

The headers on this V12 were made with individual flanges. The thought was that any deformation would be taken up by the 36’ pipe. This is a 3.2.1 design with 304 tubing.

The flanges were made from mild steel. Just something that was easier/faster to work with.

    No problems in 6 years.

  7. Vice Grips; A great tool for rounding off nuts/bolts, much quicker that the old wrenches, allows MUCH more force to be applied before slipping, causing even greater blood and skin loss.

Guilty! Last summer. No blood loss. Could see my knuckle bone. Then it got infected… This tool has been replaced by the pipe wrench.

  8. The car is at a shop near where I work. I think I might go check it out. There is a black turbo 911 there as well. I’m afraid if I go I might come home with the Porsche.

The GTO is up against real Ferraris for the same amount of money. Should be interesting to see what happens…if anything at all.

  9. It's a hybrid when the most frustrating thing about buying parts is when the guy asks: "What kind of car is this for?"

Or you know your parts guy so well he says “Go in back, have a look and see what you can find that fits.â€

Or you know your car’s serial number, but can’t remember your own zip/postal code.

  10. Back in ’77 when I was in collage I found a Hot Rod book on engine swaps. I was working on a V8 Pinto then. The book had an article on a Z with a SBC from LA. That was what got me thinking about a Z swap. I cleaned house during a move about five years ago and this book was one of the victims. Just got to keep that old stuff!
