  1. My friend who's almost done with his mechanical engineering degree is going to teach me. But Im also not going to try and weld something on the car till I get the hang of it. I'll practice and some sheet metal first and most likely have my friend with me. What I'll most likely do is get a mig and then when I'm done I'll practice on some other stuff, when it comes time for suspension I'll either find a tig and just break down and buy it, or I have found tig rentals.

I think I'm going to end up getting the Lincoln 140hd Pack since it comes with a bunch of stuff and there's a coupon at lowes right now. The only thing I'll need to get is gas and some sheet metal to practice on.

Why do you think that a mechanical engineer knows how to weld? I am a ME and the only reason I know how to weld is I was a pipefitter welder for years before I went back to school and got my degree. I have 2 welders now an Miller Maxstar for tig and stick and a Lincoln 135 with gas for Mig. I really do no need an aluminum welder.

  2. Isn't there something about cars that came from the factory with dual carbs being exempt in calif. I had a XK140 coupe years ago that was hit in a parking lot. I got the insurance company to fix it instead of total it by requesting that they replace it with another XK140 Coupe, after having a high school kid in a mustang rental car for a couple weeks they fixed it. Tell them to replace it with another Z with the same mods.

  3. I remember seeing your set-up while searching. I hoping to see that you continued the project, but alas, another non-blow-thru turbo set-up. Any plans to finish up?

Sold the car, new owner put a V8 in it and it went through a tool box when it fell off of a jack. So no Z in my garage now.

  4. I was going to do a forced induction on 45 mm SK Racing carbs. My box is built out of 4x4 aluminum tube stock. Sold the car so they are sitting on the shelf now. Just realized I built the box over 4 years ago. I was also considering using it on CAI. I would also look at building a box for the air cleaner to get some positive pressure at speed.

  5. The way it is set up is if you have an Engineering Technology Degree from an ABET apporoved program you have to wait until after graduation to take the Engineer in Training exam and then it is the same wait as for everyone to take the PE exam. A regular degree can take it during thier senior year for the EIT. I really used one book the PE Referance Manual. If you get a change look at one in the book store. You will see it is just basic, plug and chug formulas, math based. Also look on Half.com and pick up an older copy of the book, it explains a lot of your studies better than in the text books.

We had a young engineer working for us a few years ago from a major engineering college who graduated near the top of his class who could not calculate the pipe size required on an air line. All of his flow work was done in a wind tunnel. Show to me that he didn't have the basics.

  6. There is another way into engineering. I have a BS in Mech Engineering Technology from Metropolitain State College of Denver, did not have to take Calc 3 or differential equations and my physics was algebra based not calc based. It is not the degree for those who want a masters in engineering. It is set up for a design engineering position. I had a back injury as a pipefitter and had to find a new occupation. Now that I have a PE no one really cares what I have.

  7. To get back on topic I have seen several people want to put a double overhead cam set up on an L6 with no results. It would be neat if someone did but the cost is just too much. Between the 2 heads shown there are too many differences.

  8. I was lucky classed were cheaper and some of my professors wrote thier own books, loose papers I put in a binder for my ME degree. Look at the bright side after you become an engineer you will add, subtract, multiply and divide, look in up in a book and know our answer makes sense.

Hang in there, if you do not understand the subject go to the professor and sit on thier desk and have them go through what you do not understand. They do work for you. I had to write every problem out even if I had the solution in front of me.

The Engineer In Training exam has about 10 differential equations the Professional Engineer exam only has simple algebra problems. It shows where most of us engineers use math.

  9. If you cannot find what you are looking for I have a turbo motor that is missing the the MAF and fuel rail. What I know it has is the intake, exhaust, turbo, engine, wiring harness and computer. I would like to get $400 with engine stand. I am located just west of Phoenix.

  10. Have 2 of them.

I put a hole in a gas tank back in the 60s. Sealed it up with about 10 cents of “Double Bubble†Bubble Gum. It never leaked after that and sold the car with it still stuck to the bottom of the tank 6 months later.

Broke a fan belt at night going across Northern New Mexico in my Ford Van. Light were going dim and the only gas stations open had replaced the auto parts for Indian Jewelry. I noticed that the Van was not overheating so took the AC belt and put it on the alternator. Drove from Gallup NM to Flagstaff AZ with just the wind turning the water pump. Going through some of the towns the Van would start to get hot but would cool right down on the highway.

  11. In some states in the US this is a Tow away ticket, the car cannot be driven. Zs use their tail lights as reflectors and DOT requires reflectors on the back of every vehicle. So you are dealing with federal regs not only state regs. Also in a tail end collision you could be found at fault.

  12. I have all of the parts for the ZX conversion these are the parts that the guy I bought the brackets from told me to use. I will only sell them as complete unit. Sold my Z so they are gathering dust. The mounting brackets are machined aluminum, near new ZX calipers and new rotors. Will let go for $280 including shipping. I also have set of front calipers off of a 4runner they are the wide model so need wheel spacers with stock rims, $80 including shipping.
