  1. "I'm not even sure which one of these I have, anyone know?"

From my in person viewing experience, all MKIV Supras, SC300's with M/T and 1JZ's that came out of a MK3 Supra (japan only) all came with mid-sump(aka rear-sump) pans. All of the Aristos 2jz's that i have seen come with front sump pans. I still have my front sumps stuff. So my guess is that your pan came from one of the above. I'm not sure on Cressida's. I haven't researched them much. I thought they were front sump as well.

Us USA guys have it easy as all we have to do is order all of the parts for a MKIV Supra oil pan from our local dealer:

    upper pan(cast piece)

lower pan(stamped steel piece that actually holds the oil

    oil splash plate/cover

    oil pick-up

tube of Toyota FIPG 1207B gasket maker silicone(black silicone)

Replace all the parts above when you remove the like parts from your front sump 2jzgte and your ready to go. This has been my experience to date.

    Hope that helps.

  2. Hello and welcome to the 240JZ or 7M club,

1JZ mounts on the 1JZ engine block to my knowledge are in the same exact position as 2JZ engine block mounts. The 2JZ block is just a little taller than the 1JZ block so the mounts will be a little bit higher depending on how you look at it. The rubber/steel/aluminum engine mount insulators that mount to the cast aluminum engine mounts bolted to the JZ block are also interchangeable as far as I know. I put all the readibly available from any Toyota dealer, engine mount part numbers in a post started by Jason I believe.(click on my name and then click on "find all posts by oatmilk and you should find it)

What you may have gathered in reading the other Toyota JZ posts is that all of the mounts were custom made. If you look at Zgad's and Cyrus's mounts(the most well known and documented in the USA) you'll see that they too were custom made. My 2JZ mounts were custom made by BetaMotorsports. John told me that he could make another set of my mounts and it should fit into another 240z. So that may be the best option out there if you don't do it yourself or have someone else do it for you. FYI: My mounts look very similar to Zgads in layout. I'll post pictures soon in the Members 240Z Projects section. In the mean time you could check out Zgads/Cyrus pics in Members galleries section if you haven't already done so. I hope this helps you a little and leads you in the right direction.

  3. not sure if they still have them at that price though. Very knowledgeable people on the JZ engines.

Supraforums special : L19 head studs for the 2JZ $450

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We currently have 5 sets of L19 stock sized head studs for the 2JZ in stock and are offering a Supraforums special of $450 per set. The headstuds usually sell for $750 a set. These are the same headstuds that we use on our methanol racecar that has handled 45+ psi with no issues.

  6. Hello all,

After giving out my $0.02 worth of advice on this type of swap, I'll be posting some pics of my car's progress in the Member's project section. Working with John Coffee, owner of BetaMotorsports, has been a wonderful experience. You get what you pay for in this instance. A consumate professional. No hidden fees or charges, an up-front honest guy with the skills and knowledge to back it up. Oh yeah, the less I think about all the money I'm spending the better :-). Now if I could just find an honest roofer just like him, I would be set.

Look for the pics soon as I figure out how to do it.

  7. "My worry is when I do get the engine, and when it comes down to the install, are there any wiring worries I should have? Just in the engine area, I plan on running a painless chassis harness". Man do I wish they made a Datsun 240z specific kit.

I think you'll be in good shape with the painless kit though. Your questions are good ones though. I still havent figured that out yet. I still need to check on some stuff still regarding my stand alone and the factory ecu wiring before I can give out any advice in that area. Zgad or Cyrus i think rewired their cars so it gives me hope. I don't plan on figuring it all out myself. I'm sure there are some smart electrical guys that will take what i think is complex and make it look simple if I get in over my head.

  8. To be honest I never opened up the top of my engine but while switiching oil pans the bottom looked great (piston walls looked great, crank and rods looked fine, no metal shavings or junk in the oil or oil pan). I know that doesnt mean much but take for whats its worth. To be honest I found my engine from a place that was in te Whittier area. Forgot the name at this moment. It had a compression test tag attached that showed good compression. Doing a live compression test would be the best but like you said your not near any jdm importer shops. To be honest without doing a live compression test its a crap-shoot. Ask the shop for references. Also google the shop name. If someone has had good or bad experiences with them they usually let someone know about on a car forums. You might also want to look at the vendor area on this website. I seem to recall someone saying they sell jdm engines on there. You can also call Vildani. The do many of the sr20det swaps so I'm sure they have a good line on jdm motors.

Hope that helps. Oh and one last thing, be very cautious of buying from Canadian jdm sellers.

  9. With regards to wiring I'm not there yet. I'll let you know what I have accumulated though:

OBD-1 USDM 2jzgte complete engine wiring harness

I will also be getting a HKS V-Pro harness for the 2jzgte supra.

The critical things you need for a 1jz as I see it are:

1jzgte jdm engine with wiring harness and ecu if possible

    1jzgte flywheel

    7mgte R-154 5 speed tranny

    7mgte clutch kit

    electric fuel injection fuel pump

modifed stock fuel tank with a sump added to it

    fuel surge tank

custom engine mounts (Mazworx if they are close to you would be good) but depending on your skill you can also do it yourself I suppose.

    custom driveshaft

custom fuel lines (stock lines may be able to be utilized)

1jzgte ecu or a aftermarket stand alone ecu(MS2, HKS, Power FC, AEM...)

The 1jz stock engine mounts should be very similar if not exact to the part numbers I listed above. If you have a specific question I'll be glad to help as much as possible.

  10. Congrats on the start of your project. My project is like yours (2J-240z)

I already had a aluminum fuel cell box in the car so I bought the following to go inside of it:

ATL SA115 15 gallon "Saver Series" hard rubber bladder

ATL ST2 Drop-in surge tank upgrade

ATL LS-12 Level sender with gauge installed

ATL SF110 Alky Foam (so I can run E85 someday)

Nice compact set up. It cost a lot but I see as a very important safety piece. I can modify my budget in other areas to make up for the expense.

    Hope that helps a little

  11. I understand about Supra forums totally. No search function for almost a year now and not very post friendly. If you have any other questions just ask. I have been prepraring for my swap for like 4 years it seems so I've read up a lot on this stuff. I almost have to pinch myself to believe my swap is actually in progress.

  12. Are the pans and pickups custom?

No. As far as I know most people use mid-sump and rear sump interchangeably when talking 2jz oil pans. You want a mid-sump oil pan set up. All the pieces can be ordered from you local toyota dealer.

I want to keep the engine basically stock (except engine management and a front mount), is it possible to fit the exhaust on the passenger side for the TTs?

It is possible and has been done in two 240Z's that I have seen on the web, one of those being Cyrus's Z. Not sure on 280zx's but I bet it can be done if it was done on 240z's.

Would 2JZ mounts work on the 1JZ?

I believe they interchangeable based on everything I've read ans saw pictures of.

aka could I use someone else's design (since there are a few 2JZ swaps already) to mount it in?

You could copy them by looking at the pics, but I don't know of anyone currently selling them. Mazworks would like to have the car there to do one like Zgads last time I spoke with them last year. So far they're all custom made. Just throwing it out there but an easier option that even made me think twice about my swap was 2jzswap.com. They sell a rather complete kit to drop in a 2jz into a 240sx for a decent price.

Now on the transmission, of course I want a manual, but from what I have read, only the 1JZ-GTE (singe turbo) came available with a manual. So I need the bell housing from that and it should be a straight swap with an R154 5 speed right?

    Correct.

Are there any other manual transmission choices (I think the weaker W58 is one? I need to check if that ones even available in the states...)?

The other options would be W58 and V160. V160 six speeds are very strong while W58 are weaker than R154s and much weaker than V160's. All of this I have read about, not from my own personal experience. Five speed W58's came on US model Lexus SC300's.

  13. Toyota dealer part #

    12315-46041 Bracket, Engine List$:83.94 each

    12311-46041 Bracket, Engine List$: 83.94 each

    FYI:

The part numbers above are for the late model Supra engine brackets (model years 97-98). There is also early model Supra engine brackets(model years 93-96). In addition the engine insulators (rubber mounts) were different for the same model years as listed above for the engine brackets.

The late model (97-98) engine brackets are sligtly longer than the 93-96 engine brackets

The late model insulators are slightly shorter than the early model insulators.

Mixing and matching the parts can give some wiggle room on engine heights. I learned all of this from speaking to one of the Toyota dealership guys that sells parts on Supraforums. For my 240z install, I'm using the later model stuff for no reason other than the dealership could get them the fastest. I know of no performance difference between the two. I highly recommend browsing the Supraforums website to learn even more about these engines if you have the time or care to.

So far your project is looking great. Congrats.

  14. If your engine is an Aristo JDM engine (originally front sump) then that is probalby your problem. As Mike mentioned moving to USDM Supra TT mounts will make them not extend out as far the mounts you have now. I would show you mine but they are at the fabricator. If you need part numbers let me know. Your engine mount rubber pieces look to be correct though.

  15. I think you'll do well with a 2jzge. Plenty of people making lots of power on it. Check out ClubNA-t forums. There is a guy on there that sells a Chinese built complete turbo kit for like $1600.00 with many, many satisfied customers and provides what seems to be excellent customer service. Easy 400whp. One of the best bang for the bucks in the Supra world it seems. I myself am going 2jzgte but I if i was to do it again I would go 2jzge since I have modest whp goals.

  16. Both conversions will cost a decent sum of money. There is more 240Z/RB installation parts support than 240Z/2jZ which is pretty much all custom.

Both engines are great so its could be a toss up there performance wise but you did bring up the possibility of using another 2jz family engine. Taking that into consideration I would give the 2jz a slight edge. N/A 2jz engines are available for pretty low prices compared to 2jzgte's and RB26dett's. Of course you can burn through that savings pretty quickly due to the custom install. If stock parts availability is king, then the 2j wins for me being in the USA.

Some will ask what is the purpose of the car. I will ask what do you see yourself driving regardless of purpose? What do you see being under the hood when you day dream about it? If you have a engine in mind then stick with it and move ahead with no need for second guessing. If you don't, then the available 240z/RB install kits would push me into that direction since it possibly can save you some fabrication costs and you get to learn from a lot other people's experiences and know-how.

I have found that cost's savings choosing between a less expensive engine (RB25/1JZ) and a more expensive engine (RB26DETT/2JZGTE) can quickly become forgotten about after accumulating parts. Buy the best engine.

Not sure if my rambling helps or not but best of luck with with your choice.

  17. For R154 manual tranny guys:

    1. Get a JDM 2jzgte auto engine: pull off the tranny and flex plate, install a throughout bearing (from clutch kit below) into the back of the crankshaft

    2. Get a R154 tranny from a Mk3 Supra turbo

    3. Order a JDM 1jz-R154 bellhousing (check supraforums)

    4. Order a 1jz flywheel (driftmotion)

    5. Order a complete clutch kit for a Mk 3 Supra turbo (your choice)

    6. Pull the bellhousing from the stock Mk3 R154 tranny and install the 1jz bellshousing and clutch kit

Now your all good to go to marry the R154 tranny to the 2jzgte. If you get ahold of a Mk4 Supra V-160 tranny then just install the TO bearing and marry the engine and tranny.

    For 2jzgte/TH400 guys:
