  1. I'm no expert on the engine but do know that a VQ30det is being used in the Nismo and other 350Z in the GT 500 class (twin turboed not single like the stocker). It was also used two years ago "instead" of the RB26dett engine in the 2003 Nismo Sykline JGTC cars. That doesnt prove its a better engine, and of course any prfessionally prepared engine bears almost no resemblance to the stocker. But facts is facts. And of course we now know that the VQ30DETT powered Nismo 350Z won the JGTC championship in its first year of competition over Twin turbo V-8 Supras and Twin turbo V-6 NSX's. Just my two cents.
  2. have it change color to black as the engine heats it up. Anyone have experience with this heat activated paint? http://www.trippininc.com/
  3. I live in west los angeles. I just got two quotes for body work on my 1973 240z. The original color of the car is Datsun color code 115. It was repainted in red by the P.O. The car has a scratch like dent on the passenger door ( not deep at all) one ding on the rear tailight panel and one ding on the left corner edge of the hood. Two rust bubbles (2mm in diameter) on the windshield cowl cover, thats it for rust. I love red 240Z's but the P.O replaced the dash with a crack free one and the engine compartment and wheel wheels are still looking good with the original blue metallic paint so I decided to go original. The interior is white ( aka beige or off-white). I need to have that restored as well. Any suggestions for body and interior shops in the los angeles area that take good care of Z cars are welcome. If you have pictures of your car painted in the 115 color code please send them to me at: oatmilk@hotmail.com Both quotes came within a $200 of each other: R&I front & rear-$150 Strip paint down to bare metal for cracks and chips-$600 Repair dings & dents ( whole vehicle), remove parts to gain access-$500 Primer and wet sand car complete and paint car complete in BC/CC $1850 Paint door jam, underhood, inside trunk-$295 Color sand & buff complete-$300 Total-Shop#1 $3695, Shop# 2 was $3500. 1-2 months to do the work at both What do you think? I have seen both shops work and they both are good. One shop will use Dupont and the other PPG. I asked about imported paint systems...Sikkens, Glassurit and so on, and the typical response was they are good but your mostly paying for the name and importing costs. Thanks for the help in advance,
  4. I know it seems wierd for the rims to fit both cars. Thats why I went to try them on. I 've been so confused on the how and whys of why some fit and others dont. I was looking at my 280zx turbo snowflake rims earlier before I went and they seemed to have an offset more similar to newer rims than the typical older rims. What sealed the deal was measuring the turbo rims and then using the offset chart on this webpage: Can someone post it? http://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html#backspace I figured to take the guy up on his offer of trying them out. He said it would help him when other Z guys would call anyway. Like it said take it for what its worth. If it helps one person, it was worth it to me going down there.
  5. FYI. Check out these on EBAY: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7939647833&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT I actually went to the palce and tried them on the back of my stock height 1972 240z. The rears fit with about a little over a 1/4" inch between the strut housing and tire. The front of the same rim was about 1/4" outside the rear wheel well. if the car was lowered you would rub with these tires. Using tires that didnt have as much bulge would help a bunch, but it would still be close. Using the front rim on the rear of my car, it fit perfectly. Actually the rim was inside the wheel well by a few millimeters. It would tuck perfectly on a lowered car. I hope this helps somone regarding fitment at least regarding the offsets listed. The guy is really cool. The rims are really light.
  6. I havent asked how wide they can go, but the feeling I got was that they could do just about any size. Our rep agency reps this company, so thats why I can get the great deal(under $300 each for any size I want in a 5 or 6 bolt pattern) And your right, there wont be a clear cut winner. Lesson learned for the next time I think about posting such a question. I almost feel like going wider and using ZG flares since I wll be getting them custom. I called Group A about custom Simmons which I like... way to expensive. CCW's,dont really care for the look. Kinesis, HRE too expensive as well. Anybody selling any Epsilons?
  7. I have an opportunity to get some custom billet rims made by US Wheel. They dont have any mesh styles so I have to choose from what they do have. I want something that seems race not bling so that automatically outs some of the listed styles. I like the Intense 5 in a 5X114.3 17x7 or 8 with a 4" B.S. to tuck on a non-flared 73 Z w/coilovers. Not a huge fan of 5 spokes on early Z's but i think the huge ols school lip will make me feel much better about them. I was also thinking of having the centers coated in Black (my preference), or gunmetal, or bronze or gold. It would be really cool if someone could photoshop the intense 5's and whatever else on a Z...hadman??? It would help me out big time. Heres the link: http://www.uswheel.com/bonspeed/set.htm thanks in advance, P.S. how do I change my info decription below my post?
  8. Taking these wheels into consideration: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7918864752&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT Question 1: Using a 5 lug conversion kit with the stock offset (MM, Jaime T) or Z31 offset how would these rims fit on a lowered 240z or 240Z running ZG flares? May not be the lightest rims or big dollar quality, but you cant complain too much about the price and looks imho. thanks in advance,
  9. go to a album called promisekeeper Z and you should find my white 71 z with a motorsport body kit, e31 l24 and 4spd. thanks for the suggestion and reply.
  10. I have 240Z that I like except the motorsport body kit on it. The car was formally owned by a body shop owner who put the body kit on for his son, hence it was did right and is molded to the rest of the body. It looks fantastic...if you like body kits on Z's, but I dont. Can you safely remove the kit without damaging the body too much? Maybe I'll trade someone that likes body kits for a car with no kit. Any advice is appreciated. thanks,
  11. I knew it wasnt the 350 engine, just referring thats its in the same VQ engine family which should give nissan plenty of real world results if they should decide to turbo the 350 some day. Nevertheless this would make a cool swap especially if the 350 tranny bolts up.
  12. Has anyone thought about swapping this engine: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2476711766&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT
  13. I'll definetely contact you. My friend works at the japenese engine place, thats why I can get it so cheap.
  14. Hello All, My first post to HybridZ. I've got love for purist and hybrid's. Too many nice cars around to hate. Lifes too short. I got a chance to buy a 1JZGTE (complete engine only) for $700 US. I live in west los angeles. I'm debating between finishing up what I have or going the hybrid route. What I have is a 71 240z(orig, L24 and 4 spd, 2 spots of rust perfect interior, dentless body with Motorsport body kit), 72 240z (nice black paint except roof, rusty pass.side floor pan, stripped interior, good L24 and 4spd) and a 81 280zx turbo (automatic, running). I also have a L28et long block sitting on the engine stand, a stainless steel single turbo header (purchased and sitting for over 10 years), custom built Innovative T3/4 turbo good for 500HP, Tial wastegate, huge custom Spearco I/C (think skyline big and thick), and a box of steel J-tubes for piping and a LD28 crank. Obviously, I got some decent stuff, yet I'm still enamored by the idea of going 1JZGTE, 2jzGTE or SR20DET. My friend at work just picked up his sr20det ($1500 for engine, tranny) to go into his 240z. I love the idea of the SR and going V-mount (radiator and IC). Still I like the way a inline six fills the engine bay. A 1JZgte for $700 sounds almost to enticing to pass up. With the 1JZ I know you have to mix and match trannies unless you get the rare jdm 5 spd that matches it. What to do sell the above and go 1jz? I'm stuck. The fastest car I ever rode in was a 3.0L Cartech FI turbo 240Z so I know I'll be more than satisfied with that. If you you want to help me finish my project and are in the area give me a ring or write. Someone convince me to stay on course. I apologize in advance if you fell I've misposted in the wrong place. thanks all, lk oatmilk@hotmail.com (310) 617-7615
