280z dual duty brake setup suggestions
mforget replied to mforget's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Yess i saw this thread and many others... It would be 20-25 min sessions on a pretty fast track with a couple of hard braking zones.....with the v8 i highly doubt the stock setup would be adequate....i think rear disks would be mandatory too.... With my e36 track car i just buy cheap plain chineese rotors from the local auto parts store and throw them in garbage when they are done....its cheap and i can get rotors easily as needed.... -
Hi, i am currently building my 280z V8 LS dual duty car and i would like to see what other track junkies use for brake setups. I know most of the kits availlable, but my concern is that most of them use proprietary rotors or oem rotors that must be modified. Is there any good setup that would use on the shelf rotors? I know the toyota pickup vented setup do but i am wondering if it can really handle track duties.... Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

No dyno required as the ecu is self tuning. Based mainly on wideband sensor data......may not be 100% optimal like a real dyno tune but it can run really good let me tell you.....
-
No no forget the 2k budget i decided to put some more money in it....4-5k should make it....
-
I already started yess.... I would have to have someone finetune the ms3 for me and probably a dyno run so those costs adds to ms3 as well....ez-efi is nice for this you start the engine and go.....as stated before i already have one on my race car and i was impressed with that thing.... https://1drv.ms/v/s!AjU5VB8wXXw3lBnqqy2VusfxaXvp

Im still not ruling out the 4 bbl intake, considering i would have to buy a pallnet fuel rail, injectors, probably 60mm throttle body + z car depot ez efi kit....i could just buy the arizona z car 4 bbl intake and ez-efi throttle body kit and be done with it....cost would probably be similar...it probably flows a bit better as well....cleans up the engine bay....i dont know...
-
Do you have any porting done on the stock intake?
-
My plan was to use the z car depot ez-efi self tuning kit that they developped for the stock intake....but if the stock intake is a real problem, i may just put a 4 barell intake and ran an ez-efi electronic throttle body instead....i dont have patience to mess with carbs anymore....
-
Hey thanks for all the advice! Yeah I changed my budget for the engine work! But budget is growing real fast for not much hp from my calculations.... Injectors question is answered, i will go for bigger ones.... Now you have me wondering again about that restrictive stock efi intake......

Thread revival Im about to start my engine work, i now have to choose a camshaft kit for my planned setup : 77' L28 with flat top pistons N47 head will be sent for port and polish to match my cam Aftermaket EFI will be used Stock intake manifold. Headers and exhaust will be installed. Will be doing mainly street and occasional track days with this car. Im likely to buy one of the schneider cam kits from zstore : http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic12e03/10-2000 So i have 2 questions : 1- Knowing that i will be using the stock L28 intake manifold, am i wasting money by going with a "big" cam like the 10-2005? 2- Stock injectors should be good for 200-250 hp from my understanding so no need to upgrade them right? Thanks in advance for your help!

Ho youre so right..... Great infos right there.. Sorry! But i am still wondering if there is any benefits performance wise over a megasquirt setup....
-
UPDATE : since the begining of this build i am looking for a self tuning EFI option that would fit on my L28 and didnt found anything.... I have the FAST EZ-EFi 2.0 on my V8 LS track car and this thing is awesome. So i looked at FAST, Holley and FITECH offerings and found that their EFI throttle body kits would fit the L28 with the addition of an 4 barrel intake. I already talked to a tech at comp cams(fast) and he told me that it should work without a problem. I have to say that my experience is very good with the kit i have on my track car, i installed the kit, entered the base parameters, afr targets and the car was running at first start. Im tracking it for the 3rd season now without a single problem.... I highly doubt anyone got any experience with this on a L28 but ill ask anyway. Heres the kits in questions : http://fitechefi.com/products/30003/ http://www.fuelairspark.com/fas/ez-efir-self-tuning-fuel-injection-system-base-kithtml/ https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/fuel_injection/sniper_efi/sniper_4bbl_tbi_kits/parts/550-511 Is using a 4 barrel intake and efi should give some benefits over the oem datsun intake and megasquirt?

Hey great infos again thanks! Ill probably send my current N47 head for headwork since i already have it.... What compression ratio should i expect from flat tops and N47 head?
-
With the 2k budget i was ruling out the webers for sure. Your description is pretty much what i have in mind now after all those discussions, bumpers and ac are already off, emission stuff will come off, so MS, headwork, cam and exhaust, possibly headers.... I could start from there and see how it goes.....
-
Spot on....lol Everything was pretty clear until i pulled out that damn engine out of the car for the restoration project.... Now that i have it on the engine stand, it is less and less clear what will happen next..... But this thread is very constructive, thanks for all those advices!
-
If i could spend around 2k to get there it would be ok.... I can do the cam myself but i would send the head for the headwork.... I do most of the work myself on my cars execpt some internal engine works that i rather not mess with..... I just dont want to get to a point that i would regret to not have swapped another engine instead.....
-
Vintage power is what i would like best for this car but not at the expense of spending ridiculous amount of money.... And by "power" i mean something around 200-250 hp, it would be perfect for what i intend to do with this car.... I already have my high hp track beast so im not looking into that kind of build with the Z......Not for now at least.... But sadly, it looks like much $$ will have to be spent to get to those conservative number...lol For the ZX distributor thing, i read somewhere that the curve on them was more adapted(but not ideal) for the webers than the stock one but i may be wrong on that one......
-
Hey, thanks for the comments! Yeah im aware that not much hp can be get from those engines without spending ton of money..... Suspensions, brakes etc will be done, but in that area i already know what to do. So if i want to get some hps without breaking the bank, you would say big cam, head work and megasquirt? I may go this way and add some headers and exhaust to get some sound....
-
I saw those ITBs.....Very nice in my opinion...But pricey yes...
-
With your target of around 400hp, i would do a V8 LS/T56 swap without hesitation. I have one in my BMW E36 track car currently. Easy to get those numbers, reliable, easy to get parts, easy to work on, fit nicely in your chassis without affecting balance too much. Cost wise, i presume it would be around the same as a RB swap if not less.... But yeah, its a GM engine....
-
83k miles, i heard the same thing from an old mechanic friend of mine..... Your right about the triple weber setup, i think that most people do it for the same reasons, looks, sound and style.....Resale value also probably.... The car will be fully restored with the engine bay repainted etc.....It would be totally sick to have them under the hood but reading all the posts about the tuning issues, i may have to reconsider and go megasquirt instead..... Im not a big fan of carbs, even if i have some experience tuning them back in the days (not webers)......Webers would be the only ones i would put down there for the reasons already explained.
-
Looks like some very nice distributor there, but definately not cheap..... With an SU setup, do you even have to upgrade the distributor or the stock 280z one would do the trick?
-
What would be the distributor of choice to use with the triple webers?
-
Hey, thanks for the comments, yeah i already saw some of his posts, i dont know who should i trust about those cam specs. I dont mind to sacrifice some streetability but not to the point that the car will be no fun to drive at all on the streets.... By HD clutch i mean something stronger than oem....Probably ACT The distributor question is something i will have to adress, i didnt take enough time reading about the availlable options yet.... Head work is definately on my list if i can find some knowledgeable people over here(canada) to do the job. I have the engine on my stand right now waiting for my plan to be finalized.... So any other inputs on this are welcomed! Thanks!

Hi, i am currently restoring a 77 280z that i will be using as a dual duty street/occasional track day car. I am pretty set on building my L28 instead of doing a swap but i would like to get some advice on this topic. Ive spent several days searching on the forums and heres my current plan : Have the block opened to do ring/bearings as a preventive mesure. Install the 10-2003 schneider cam kit from z-store : http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/10-2000 (is this a good choice??) Triple weber carb setup, need advice between DCOE 40 or 45 MSA 3-2 headers. MSA twice pipe exhaust Early ZX distributor to get the timing right for the webers. HD clutch upgrade. Does it sounds like a good setup? Im looking more at reliability than high hp numbers. Thanks in advance!
