I have an '84. ------- Sidetrack question, do you guys think a vg30e out of a junkyard is overpriced at 350? It seems a touch high to me.
-
That water/alcohol injection system seems pretty sweet. So you guys think that with a 9.1 to 1 block, with the turbo, a K+N or similar intake, full 3 inch exhaust, and this alcohol injection setup that I can safely run 8-10 psi? How much power do you think that would put to the wheels, about 220-230 hp and higher torque? Also, I wanted to know, would it be safe to swap the injectors to the larger (but used) ones from my vg30et?
-
I do apologize if this has already been answered, but: How much boost could be safely run through a turbofied vg30e? With an intercooler certainly in the works, but not on the horizon. What would the limits be at first, due to the heat, and after the intercooler installed what would the limits be due to compression issues? I ask becuase I have two days off from work and I'm running to a salvage yard where I know 3 vg30es are resting. If I can get a complete longblock for the right price, then this will be my new project. And can someone explain this water injection business? Sorry, to be truthful I've always been more into domestic v8 powered cars, and some of this stuff throws me for a loop. It's like a reservoir you fill and it shoots it onto the turbo?

Well damn, scratch the 14b. I'll just hold onto 10 pounds for now. I found a guy in my relative area with a supposedly good vg30et and a blown tranny. Actually, his car seems to be in better condition than mine. I'll probably throw my 5 speed in his car and go from there. About reaching 300hp with the stock turbo. I've been reading on z31.com for some time, and as far as I can get from there with a MBC reading 10 pounds of boost, a decent intake and full 3 inch exhaust I should actually be rising only to the 275 margin. What would the next step be to push it reliably over the 300 mark using the stock turbo and no i/c? (mind you I plan on using some n20 a little later with it too )
-
Does anyone know where I can find a shortlblock or longblock assembly for a vg30et? Would it be feasible to fit my turbo accessories onto a n/a engine? If so, what problems would I face (ecu/mounting/clearance issues). Also, I see some people stating that the higher compression of this engine would increase performance. But isn't the whole point of a force fed engine to have lower compression and more boost? The reason I ask is because someone around me has a 14b turbo out of his dsm for sale (internally wastegated also) and I was thinking about running 15-16 pounds of boost after I hooked up with an intercooler. What would be the highest compression I could run with stock vg30e internals? Thanks in advance, Michael

If you and/or anyone else on the board that has done the z31 v8 swap could make a thread and list as much info as you can, that would be phenominally helpful to me and the recent influx of people who seem to be interested in the same project. I have an '85 turbo with a crap engine, and it seems it would be about the same money to roll with a small block as to rebuild the VG30. How much custom fabrication was required? Can you make templates of your mounts?

I just bought a new car for myself (7 months of waiting!). And was wondering if the guys at HybridZ knew of a good technical Honda forum that I can talk about my '90 Accord coupe on. Of course the car's not much to speak of performance-wise, but it has to last me through Junior college at least, and I'd like to squeaze what I can out of it, and get rid of those nasty hubcaps. Which reminds me, does anyone have any used Honda wheels for sale? (I'm doubtful, but it can't hurt to try).

I've been searching and searching for some sort of automobile for myself for as little money as possible (lost my job recently, and am not very keen on finding another one soon). My girlfriend and I are out walking and happen upon a '93 240sx for sale with a marquee of $750. I didn't take alot of time to check it out (girlfriend wasn't real interested) but it looked like a nice, clean black auto nissan. The next day my g/f tells me to call him (i dont' remember the #, but she's crazy like that. she can remember anyone's phone number or address by looking at it once). I give him a ring and he says the rod bearings were recently replace and the main bearing is going out now. He says other than that it's in perfect daily driver condition. I've been reading about te KA24de on the internet in my spare time and as far as 4 banger tuner engines go, this looks like the one I'd want to work on most.(That, and it's a Nissan ). My question is this: how much would the main bearing be to replace, and what should I ask this guy about the car whenever I meet him? FOr 750 bucks, it seems like it would need alot of work. But I've never seen or heard it run. What are your opinions?

Hi. I totalled my pickup back in May and have been without a car since. I've been looking for something, but have little cash and options. This time I'm not going to just settle for something like I did with my 4 banger automatic S-10. I've waited this long for a car, so I don't mind waiting a little longer for something with some performance. I would have been looking for a car earlier, but I spent alot of summertime in the hospital and various doctors and therapists offices.(broken femur, hip, vertebrae and clavicle) The bright side is, I set off every metal detector I go through now Anyways, I was curious as to what type of performance is reasonable out of a N/A L28 engine. And I'm also open to other car types. I've been looking into alot of third gen GM F-bodies and may just get a TPI-powered pony. I've also gained an interest in the Subaru SVX (circa 92-97). I like the H-6 boxer AWD concept. I'm leaning more towards the 85-92 camaro or firebird, but I'm curious what kind of 0-60 times or 1/4 times I could get out of a 280Z/280ZX ? Thanks, Michael

http://mirrored.flabber.nl/winnoise/ Pretty cool little animation/recording. Not long to load, even on 56k.

Thanks for the fix. He actually offered the car to me for 800 through E-mail. I would have done anything to get the money before the 6th, but what efforts i had to make were too little too late. I've tried calling him multiple times, but only get voicemail. I've also emailed him 2 or 3 times. nada.

the link doesn't work for me right off, but if you capitalize the 'Z' in 280z, it seems to work. He says he bought this from a man who dropped the motor and tranny. It also says he owned it back to the early 80's, which i take it may mean that the engine is in the scarab position? To me it looks pretty far back in the bay, but I don't have any real experience w/ the cars.

Thanks for the further replies. (I got a raise tonight, btw 8) ) The search continues for a Z in my price range, be sure to E-mail me if you come accross a prospect plz! M1chael986@hotmail.com I talked to a member on this board about his car back in late december, early january. he said he was leaving for boot camp on jan 6th, and I haven't heard from him since. Perhaps you guys could fill me in? his car: http://www.pizazzusa.com/280Z. Best part about it was that it's local. That's a perfect example of what condition i'm looking for too. Spots of rust are really something (don't laugh) that i'm LOOKING for. I know that if i can get a rustball, then it'll be cheaper. On top of that, not to sound cocky, but I can delete most of the exterior spots in my school's shop. I also get to use the sheetmetal (of mutliple widths) for free. For all I care about how even the interior is, I'll make an entire new smooth floorboard to replace the normal one even if it doesn't match up w/ the other side. I'm certainly not hoping to restore the car. But back to that 280, if you guys could tell me what you know or think about this guy and his car, I'd be much obliged.

Mike, Pathogen: thanks for the opinions. I enjoy reading them from two different views. My dad never really had anything against me keeping it at his house. It would make for the third automobile lawn decoration. And recently he came around, he told me if I keep doing right and work in school for my diploma, he'll help me work on the car. Mind you he still doesn't want me getting a hybrid (for a new reason, he doesn't want me to get a non-original car. For the sake of depreciating value) but he won't stand against me getting a hybrid. However, I still have to raise the money myself. Fine by me, after all payments made, I pocket about 50 bucks every week. Given some time, I'll have the money. And some other good news: i just got accepted to a program at school that'll have me a diploma about 4 months before the rest of my class. And this summer, the local Wyotech recruiter is having a meeting with my parents and me. Wyotech is another bundle of disagreements between my father and me, but that's another story.

I appreciate all of the thoughtful responses, and have taken them all into consideration. For the record, however, I was never looking for a stock Z to eventually do a swap into. I've been searching more for an already achieved hybrid. I have a few hundred saved up, and about two or three times that coming to me some time shortly. Dont' get me wrong, I never blow my paycheck. I save every bit of I can, but that never amounts to much. As far as the work I can do on it goes, so long is nothing as serious as metal shavings falling down the carb happens, I can manage by myself. I have full use (and skill for someone my age) with various stick, mig, and tig welders and a plasma cutter. I've had experience in interior upholstery from my stepdad teaching me to upholster furniture. And my Uncle, who owns a body shop in Houston, says he'll give me a free paintjob if I ever get a car primered down and smoothed out. I understand fully the effects of the 'while i'm at it syndrome', but I generally have pretty good self control. To top that off, I'm a longtime art student and have spent plenty time sketching up how I want my interior to look. I'm fairly confident I can alter what I want how I want with minimul cash (knock on wood). I have no dreams of an expensive sterio, elaborate electronic gizmos, or a 10 second et. I simply yearn for a car that'll catch your eye from a distance, a car that I won't have to abuse and rev to keep going the speed limit, and one that I can occasionally have some fun in. I've taken a couple test rides in stock s30zs before, btw. It's great fun and all, but I've always thought of it as misleading power. It seems like you're going faster than your are. Maybe it's just me, though. Still, don't get me wrong, I can see that most of you have the background to see that I'm headed for financial decline with such a car. But the truth is I don't mind. I'm certainly not what you might consider college material and I've been in a financial slump for as long as I can remember. So I think it's time to stop paying on my 3000 dollar truck, and start looking for a car. I really don't mind keeping the car on the side of the house for several months. That'd give me time to check out everything i want to, and to make absolutely sure about it before I put it on insurance and started driving it. (i checked out insurance already, too. The payment is almost exactly what i pay for both car note and insurance every month. a little less) I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what you think? Thanks, - Michael

Guys, i've been looking into Datsun Z cars, specifically Chevy powered Hybrid V8 Zs, since I was 15 years old. I'll be turning 18 this year, and I'm still rolling in a 1996 S-10. I've been working for awhile, but saving money is very hard when you have a minimum wage job and have to nearly all of your income go straight back out for car note and insurance. I've tried explaining to my parents how much I think these cars kick ass, and shown them some of the cheaper ones I've found. Alas both of my parents have their own reasons for changing the subject. My father is a major obstacle, he's loved cars since before he was a teenager. When he turned my age, his first car was a big block '69 Mach 1. He tells me some of the crazy stuff he did when he was a kid, which is likely his main reason for him not wanting me to get such a quick car. He thinks that hybrid projects always turn into messes too. In his experience, he says, they all just turn into a rolling conglameration of backfiring hardware. He says my 20 second S-10 is more than enough car for me. I'll tell you about my mom's annoying behavior later. Do y'all have any advice that would help change my dad's mind? thx in advance. - M1chael

Matchew~!! What's up, man? I've seen this post before and even after I went down and saw your car, but it didn't click till just now that it's you (you know me ) I tell you what, my digicam has taken some pretty nice pics before, especially for what i payed for it (35-40ish). I'll get some batteries here in a few days and run down there. You guys wouldn't believe how pretty this car is. I love the paint on there. And listen to Len, I'd love to see you put that 280ZXT Turbo in there. You can smoke Derek's car with it(Of course with him driving, I could take him in my pickup ) Un-funded by my parents, I'm still on a quest for the money to by a cheap Z. So in the meantime, you should come down the street and give me a ride sometime Later - Michael

You guys think it's possible here soon that Nissan could make an all new Z car using the 5.6l V8 from the Titan pickup or the Pathfinder Armada? It'd definately be killer. If I'm not mistaken, the V8 makes around 300 horsepower and 380 ft. lbs. of torque? The great engineers at Nissan could surely find new ways to gear that power in a sports coupe. Could you imagine? Then they could have the Turbo model! Nostalgic of the 280ZX-T. Oh, well. Even if they never do it, I can dream

I'd post more, but I don't even own a Z car. I'm still in the 'Crap, I want one of those!' stage.

Earlier this afternoon, about an hour after school let out, I was cruising out to the lake. I'm on a small 35 mph road coming up behind one of those new Impalas (non-SS). The Impala is behind an 80s model Suburban, and we're all behind a school bus (the same bus I used to ride, in fact). The driver of the Suburban, likely because he was a kid, found himself irritated at the bus. And just after the bus had dropped a load of kids off, he decided to pass in the no-passing zone while the bus was still idling slow (even still had on his stop sign). After the old Chevy does that, I hear a siren. It's obviously a police siren, and i'm looking all around me, trying to see which way I should pull over. The bus stops immediately and the Impala in front of me, as I now see, is an undercover police officer . He pulls over the Suburban and undoubtedly packs him with a couple of hefty fines. It just brings some perspective to you. It did me.

Hope you enjoy it. I've been here all my life, but that's large in part because of the East Texas atmosphere. All the roots run deep around here, everyone's scared of leaving the Tyler area. I'm happy every time I see someone moving freely about the country, it reminds me that there's a world out there

AOL IM, post screen names to chat with hybridz members..?
M1chael replied to a topic in Non Tech Board
Well, I don't post here very much, but: AIM: M1chael986 I don't even own a Z , but i did test drive one once! And that's why i've been dedicating myself to saving money recently so I can buy a little Datsun of my own. I've given up alot to conserve money, and i'm stocking up little by little I'd like to join an AIM chat, to hear your opinions on HybridZs, but I couldn't join you Saturday, that's my B-day -
I was taking a buddy of mine to where his car was parked today (long story), and as i was pulling away i asked him "Hey, you wanna drag?" He looked at me and my '96 Chevy S-10 and laughed, then he nodded his head and said "Sure, follow me." So he jumped in his Grandma's Diamante and i followed him around (this was his neck of the woods, he knew more about the place than I did.) We finally find a place, about 1/6th of a mile long, that goes downhill with those horizontal stops, kind of like you see in San Francisco. The first hill is blind, but there's barely any traffic, i'm in the opposite lane of traffic as we pull to the hill, and a school bus pops in front of me (scared the pooky out of me!) and i darted back in front of my friend. Once the bus had gone by, we were both next to one another, laughing. "Okay, wanna go now?" he asked. I said we needed a way of starting off. I looked down in my pickup, and saw some dirty shoes. "I'm gonna throw this shoe high in the air, whenever it lands, we're off!" He agreed, and i reared back and chunked the shoe. The shoe landed and we both stomped on the gas, i held it at about 80% and my little 2.8liter 4 cylinder peeled away from him quick. By the time we'd gone over the first flat spot, i was holding the pedal all the way down. He just kept getting farther behind me, so i went ahead and got back in the right lane, and got up at around 75 mph before i stopped the beating. He pulled up to me, and we were laughing about it. He complained that his car had poor acceleration and that he was on empty. Excuses excuses i say, lol. So then I drove back to the starting point, picked up my shoe, and we left. (note: the shoe now has a dirty tire print on it, because i rolled over it at the start) Just thought I'd share.
