  1. Welcome to the wonderful world of 510 owners.

Does it still have a points type distributor?

As someone else said, 1 1/2 years is not that long.

I would pull the hose from the fuel filter (front corner of engine compartment) that goes to the fuel pump and stick it in a can of fresh gas. Then make sure you have a good battery. Next pull the air cleaner and put a little fresh gas in the carb and then see if it will start. If it does not start, pull a spark plug and see if it is getting spark. If no spark, pop the cap on the dizzy and check the points.

That car should start if it was running when parked.

Check out the following sites for good 510 info:

Good luck with the new 510.

  2. Seriously, how many people are going to look at your car and go "D@mn, that's an awesome ride.......except for those 'repro' euro turn signals." Please. It's especially funny seeing this kind of criticism from members whose vehicles are nowhere near OEM.

No one. That wasn't the point. The original post in this thread was taking about buying a set of these. No mention of NOS or reproduction. 280Zforce mentioned that he had a set of NOS for $175 and 280Z - 75 said he had seen them for $19 a set. then he showed a link to an ebay auction for only one side for $49, then it was metioned that the NOS sets brought way more money. He never mentioned that he was willing to accept reproductions so I was merely pointing it out. A guy in Europe or Australia may want an NOS set and be willing to pay for them. I was also pointing out that IMO that was alot of money for a reproduction set. Especially when he only wanted to pay $19 for a set earlier on.

Funny thing about NOS parts, they hold their value. Not so for the reproductions.

  3. I guess this seller on ebay uses A LOT of glue to make that one look brand-new. He sells them on ebay all the time too... use to be $19. Ill pass on yours though. But thanks for offering.

Those in that eBay auction are coming from Lebanon in the Middle East. It is $49 with shipping. That is a good price. Does he have both sides?

I ahve an NOS set but I wouldn't sell them for $100. Maybe $200

  4. Nice Dave. Sounds like a great project. A bit scary to let a 16 year old drive a nice classic Z car though. Z cars are tin cans and don't offer much in the way of safety protection. Unless you plan to install a full cage like it your LS1 car. Maybe a 77 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham or a big hummer or something would be better for the beginner drivers.

  5. OK. Since I jokingly suggested an LS1 Z car club I feel compelled to follow this thread.

    My car is a 1972 240Z.

The motor is a 2002 LS1 from a Camaro SS with 20,000 miles. It has the LS6 block. The motor is stock.

    The transmission is a T56 6 speed from a 2001 Trans - Am WS6

I used the JCI (Johns Cars Inc.) install components. JCI motor mounts, A/C setup, driveshaft, fuel pump, speedo signal converter, etc.

I used the JTR Trans Crossmember and Air intake system.

I had Speartech make a custom wiring harness and reprogram the computer.

    I have the Sanderson Headers.

I started on the swap in May of 2004 and hope to have it back on the road this spring but no later than August in time for the international Z Car Convention.

The car has coilovers on all 4 corners with eibach springs, camber plates, Tokiko 5 way adjustable inserts, strut tower bars, poly bushings, etc.

Brakes are soon to be upgraded along with adding a 4 point rollbar and sub frame connectors.

That's all I can think of for now.

Oh yeah, I am in Maryland near Washington, DC

Lets hear from the rest of you so we can have a good resource for the newbees.

Updates since I posted this so long ago.

Car is 90% or more completed. It has been on the road since August 2005 and I have driven and enjoyed it for about 10K miles.

Can now has a Q45 VLSD with MMS adapters, MMS 13" big Brake Kit, New NOS Dash with speedhut EL lighted stock gauges, Vintage Air AC/Heat system, Leather Recaro Seats and 16" x 7" Panasports.

I have had it on a dyno and it made 340RWHP and 365 RWT. I have run it down the 1/4 mile track 2 times. Both runs were tracktion limited and I ran a 12.88 at 109mph.

I have done 7 track days with the car and it has performed fantastic. The car is extremely reliable and also gets great fuel mileage. I got 30+ Miles per gallon on a 900 mile trip.

I love my LS1 powered Z car. This is the way Datsun should have made them.

  6. If you want the FI tank from a 280Z that will almost bolt into a 240Z, you need the tank from a 1975 or 1976 280Z. Then you need to use the 280Z mounting straps or get longer bolts for the 240Z straps.

The 77 and 78 280Z tank is a different design.

    I have a 76 280Z tank in my 240Z too.

  7. I've actually been lurking here for almost a year.. Every time I'd go to post something, I'd search and discover it had been discussed and answered ad infinitum. I don't have enough knowledge to offer advice to anyone as a reply, and I didn't want to clutter the forum with dumb questions and hostile "Use the search!" answer.

I also did not think you were selling the car in your avatar. I figured you had another Z laying around, perhaps a stock project you had abandoned. If I had, I definitely would not have lowballed you like that. Your car is indeed awe inspiring and very well done.

I based my price on what I'd seen stock decent Zs going for on eBay and Craigslist. I've seen quite a few go around the $5K range. A little higher if they are exceptional for have a story behind them. Even the perfect, <30K original mile cars are being listed for <$20K, and they aren't getting a whole lot of interest at that price.

Forgive me if I have come off as haughty or indignant. I'm merely trying to explain my position.

No problem. You sound like you have been doing your homework. I should have made it clear as to which car I was offering.

Best of luck in your search for a Z car. Take your time, It will pay off in the end. I looked at over 20 cars and it took almost 2 years for me to find mine.

    Happy Holidays,

  8. David, very nice car.

    Thank you!!

I am not sure most people would understand a "good bit" to be a 600% increase, but good luck selling you car in this market.

If you are serious about selling it, you should be as aggressive as you can be as soon as you can, because with all the housing foreclosures and all the job lay offs - - especially those coming after the new year - - I think you are going to see a lot of nice cars for sale in an ever-declining market. (No house means no garage and no job means that you are selling your classic cars)

If you watch ebay, you can already see it happening. Cars are not selling. It took almost 3 months for a guy to sell a really nice fully built twin turbo 350z and he ultimately sold it for like $28gs I think - -after asking $38.

There is one on there now, that the guy cant get $25k for.

    Anyway, good luck.

I am not trying to actively sell it. I have given some thought to it over the past year but I am still attached to her. I am fortunate that I am not in a position where I need to sell it as the economy is not well suited for "toys" right now.

Also, You can't compare a Collectible 240Z to a mass produced 350Z. These days, 350Z are very plentiful and many people have them and lots of them are for sale, modified or not. 240Z are much more rare and very collectible and there are still buyers out there with cash even in a challenged economy.

As to the 600% increase, the original poster is a newbie here and from what he wrote in his post, I was not sure if he was looking for a really nice LS1 powered car or not so when he came back with

" Depends on what the car has done to it and the condition. A stock, in good condition Z, probably around $5000. If it has some parts in it, maybe a bit more. If that's laughable, let me know and I can adjust it. I don't think it's an entirely unreasonable amount though."

If he had even glanced at the pictures in my signature or Avatar or had a real grasp of the Z car market, he would certainly know that it would not be a $5000 car. Good LS1 motors are still selling for $3000 alone. So after I read that, I was just trying to be nice about readjusting his offer. It was obvious that my car was going to be way out of his budget.

    Happy Holidays,

  9. In percentage terms, what do you consider a "good bit" readjustment?

It would certainly need to many times the $5000 mentioned. If you look at the work that was done, the quailty of the car, and just the cost of the parts to build it, you would see that it would cost $35K -$40K to build another one like it. The car when I got it was close to $10K before the engine swap, brakes, suspension, stereo, interior, A/C , etc. And it was a clean lightly modified 240Z. And that was in 2003.

I would like to see a 240Z as clean as mine in stock condition for $5K. I would buy as many of them as I could find at that price. (not joking so sned them my way)

I would entertain serious offers over $30K. Or a bit less cash and a trade might be a possiblilty too.
