  1. Thanks for the replies, The car is an automatic(TH350), the tank has gas(about 1/3 full) and the carburetor (Q-jet) makes the squirt(I heard a hissing sound when I yank the throttle cable). Today I tried to find out if the cylinder is flooded, but before I try to do the work I thought I'll try to turn the car again since the battery should have electricity from yesterday's boosting. It turned over once, then nothing ever happened. The battery has gone dead again. I boosted the car yesterday for 5 full minutes, with the booster car running around 2000~2300 rpm the whole time. I am very sure all my electrical appliances are turned off. But 5 minutes of boosting only allow the engine to turn over once? That sounds weird to me. Should I replace the battery? Can 5 minutes of boosting be gone just after 1 attempt to start? Thanks for helping.
  2. Hello, all I got my Chevy 383ci V8 240Z couple days ago. My first American V8 car, also my first carbureted car. I asked questions about the car on my first post here : http://hybridz.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=37056 The car is great just as advertised, but there's a problem : The car rolled off the delivery truck just fine, and I put it in reverse to back it up little bit more, all is fine on the day of delivery. The second day the car won't start, turns out I might have accidentally turned on some electrical appliance and the battery is weak(weak turn-over, weak lights). I boosted the car with my daily driver, a VW Jetta, the battery has juice again. Then I tried to start 240Z with jumper cables still hooked as described in the normal boosting procedure. As soon as I start the car the engine made a loud roar for a second, then it died down, still won't start(but will turn-over). The loud roar might be because I touched the gas pedal but I am not sure that heppened. What could be wrong with the car? Have I "flooded" the cylinders because I cranked too much? How do I know if the car is flooded and how do I fix it? Thanks in advance. Keng-Pei
  3. Nissan-Fan REAL Helpful people are plenty in this forum. Break down your questions and ask them in different sections(drivetrain, engine, turbo charger, etc), simple questions get answered faster. Personally I am not knowledgable enough to answer your questions, but I am getting a V8 Z in a few weeks. Archive/search offers a lot of good reads, you learn from unexpected threads, but they just don't answer questions when you need it.
  4. Thanks for the input, fellas Once I got the car and drove it, if the gears and rpm feels alright, then I might look into getting a R200, which is close to the original TH350 ratio and appears to help both launching and high speed cruising. Now where can I find an R200? Probably pick and pull special, I mean what kind of car/truck should I be looking for? Thanks
  5. Hi guys I am new to cars and engines so I don't know if this idea is sound or feasible at all but I 'll say it anyway. I remember reading an article about a VW Touareg travelling in eastern Canada and the car has an engine option that is a diesel V10 twin turbo. So I was wondering if it is possible to put it into a 1gen Z. Also is it possible to modify a diesel engine(de-stroke it?) to make it run on regular gasoline? Here's the spec of the powertrain(it looks weaker than a regular SBC, but it's a stock diesel engine after all. RPMS are very low, hence the 6 speed manu-matic) Engine : Twin turbo 4.9L SOHC V10 diesel Power : 310@3750 Torque: 553@2000 Transmission : 6 speed manu-matic Car itself is permanent 4WD and weighs 5825lbs, manufacturer claims 0-60 in 7.5 secs. Top speed is 130mph electronically limited.
  6. Thanks for the input Wow, a whopping 3 speed, despite the fact that it is tough, do I need to change it? (i.e. if it's on your street car, would you change it?) Planned use of the car is occasional fun driving in good weather. I usually don't go faster than 70kph(44mph) on the streets, but on the highway I usually do 130kph(81mph) Using the calculator above, with default 255/50/17 tire (I'm a noob, what do those numbers mean ), and 3.75 rear diff. 44mph or 70kph = 3117rpm (2nd gear) 87mph or 130kph = 3776rpm (3rd gear) At those cruise speeds, rpms seem ok, then again I have not driven the car yet. If there's a need to change the trans, which AUTOMATIC trans will be a good candidate? Thanks in advance
  7. Hi fellas, I just bought my V8 240Z yesterday and it is pending shipping. The owner flew in from Toronto to Vancouver on official business so we had a chance to sit down and chat(and exchange payment/ownership too) I knew the car is automatic(which I prefer, for now at least), but he never said in email what kind is it. When we met f2f, he said he remember the transmission is "350Turbo" (he's the 2nd owner since the conversion, so he doesn't know everything about the parts) So I am here to find out what you gents think about "350 turbo", how many "speeds" and are the gear ratios on the high side or on the low side? BTW, the motor is 383ci sbc stroker, rear diff is from a 85 300ZX, which is 3.7? IIRC Thanks in advance
  8. Hi, I was reading a tech article in which a SBC 383 was build into having 475hp before NOS. One of the "must have" item mentioned in the article was beehive valve springs(cross section of the wire looks like an egg, overall shape of the coil looks like a Japanese sake bottle less flare) How is the spring "better" than regular springs? What does a better spring contribute in terms of performance? Thanks in advance.
  9. Hello, I've been searching for some 0-60mph times of various cars/motors on this site. For example, a fellow on this board says : "My 383ci Chevy 240Z does 0-60 in 5.5 secs" And then I compare this value to various car specs in car magazines, for example : Honda S2000 does 0-60 in 5.5 secs Here's what I don't understand 383 ci 240Z : 2500lb/350hp HondaS2000 : 2800lb/240hp Clearly the V8 Z has less lb/hp than S2k, but why do they have the same 0-60 time?
  10. Hello all I just got a pretty clean body shell. The ex-owner paid a shop to restore it, but then let it sit in his garage for some time. Now it is starting to have some surface rust showing. Here's what I am trying to find out : For Body & Engine bay : what should I do with the rust? For bottom : what kind of undercoat to use? Can undercoat be sprayed over surface rust, or do I have to sand everything under the car? Thanks in advance.
  11. Thank you guys for the input I just sent the seller a deposit today. I'll probably get it sometime in November, I'll let you guys know when I have the car. AND THEN I'll hit you with a train load of new Z owner questions!!!
  12. Hmmm...sounds like a great deal, it's very likely I'll get the car. Got some more questions for you gents though : What does it feel like to drive such a car(Chevy 383 stroker in 240Z)? Would it be hard to control as if the car would dart forward as soon as some pressure is put on the pedals? Is a car like that used only on race tracks or can I use it as a daily driver? Thanks in advance
  13. Here are the photo shots, Looks like the engine is not parallel to the centerline, is this normal? Let me know what you think about the car? Thanks
  14. Mike , thanks for the reply. I've emailed him/asked about rust problems, and what kind of diff., axle, brakes are on that car. I am waiting for his reply. I emailed him earlier for some questions of my own, here's what I gathered. He didin't do the conversion himself but bought from a guy. He had several Z cars, sold all of them(including an anniversary edition 300ZX) except this V8 Z which he intended to keep. His company is going to relocate him(likely to Asia because he can speak Chinese better, just like I do). That's why he's selling his V8-Z. He is coming to Vancouver next month, so we will have a chance to meet F2F. I asked for photos, and photo of damaged areas. He sent some, the car seems fine with collision damage to the front right fender. I'll try to upload the photos later. BTW what kind of horsepower/torque does the Chevy 383 stroker put out? Acceleration time when married to a 240Z? Keng-Pei
  15. Hello, all I just registered and have a few questions. I can get in touch with a guy that is selling his 240Z. The car has a Chevy 383 stroker in it. What's the general consensus about the engine? Where can I find out more about this engine? He said the engine only has 4000k(I guess he means "kilometer", our Canadian thing), and the car is 53000miles. The car needs some bodywork and a new paint. He and I live on different sides of Canada, with him in Ontario, me in British Columbia. How do I move the car across the continent? How much am I expected to pay for shipping? With a 6000$CDN price tag + shipping across the continent. Is this deal worth the money? I am currently taking my first Datsun 280Z(very rusty) apart, I wanted to restore it, but college is going to make me busier and busier in years to come. So I am considering spending my budget on an already build car instead of my original plan of working from ground up. Thanks in advance Keng-Pei
