TheSwede
Tjena.... ( Swedish for Hi ) First of all, excuse my grammar and spelling.... me not english wery god well here´s the problem, and trust me I´ve searched the forums for quite a while, and just cant find anyone with the same problem. The car is an 280zx stock injection non turbo. And what happens is that the spark "jumps" arround inside the ignitercap ruining it just after a couple of hours of drivning. And as we speak the car i acting irrational...hehe. When I fire it up ti runs on just 5 cyls for the first 5 minutes and then i kinda gets it right and fires up the last cylinder. This dosent always happen, sometimes it starts on all 6 and just runs perfectly..... The worst part is that it dosent matter if the engines cold, if it has been raining or ive just driven it. So please could someone just give me some info on common issues whith ignition on the old Z:s. Cheers...
ovenfood
Ii had similar problems, my problem was a leaky gasket tho (I think). Got down to like 4.5 cylinders once. But I never fixed it just kept driving :>
TheSwede
Hehe... Ok, thats one way to do it. Wich gasket are you reffering to, headgasket? But i still think my problem has to do with the ignition, a blown gasket wouldnt make my distrubuter cap pack in after 2 hours of driving. best regards pj
ovenfood
Yes head gasket. Have you tried a new dizzy cap or a new dizzy?
tec280zx
Loose rotor maybe?
TheSwede
Ive checked both the rotor and the dizzy.... But the car actually works now, and it seems that the guy at carparts store gave me the wrong plugs. When I took a look at them they where all dark black, so after switching to the old ones the car ran perfectly. And just to be clear.... what plugs do you guys recommend.. The car had Ngk Bp7es when I bought it, and the ones Iv´e been trying to run is Ngk Bpr7e. cheers.
ovenfood
I run NGK's I can't remember what they are. I "think" BP6ES (its one option hotter than standard) but that was due to my car not running right (it was water injected via the head gasket..) it helped and my mate ran his on (Champion N9YX) on cyl 1-5 and on cyl 6 it had (NGK BPR6ES) (I only know that because its on the floor of my garage) his ran fine before he took the engine out. I think the NGK plug was from his RB20DET. I hope this kind of helps.
tec280zx
BPR6ES is what run in my Z too.
zx_drift
I use BPR7ES-11 in my turbo ZX. BPR6ES-11 is stock heat range, 5 is hotter, and 7 is colder.
TheSwede
All problems solved.... As i said they gave me the wrong plugs..... and after making em give me a set of new ones, same as the ones the car had when i bought it, it works just perfectly. Its not the stock plugs, but as it turns out my ruff idle is beacause of the 280/290 cam the previous owner had installed....hehe. So to be honest with ya, the plugs i got might not be the right ones but the car runs and thats all im looking for this summer....Got plans for the old Z this winter. Thanks for all the input.
