bigjake34452
hey guys going to get the head resurfaced and had a quick question. I need to remove the cam what i was wondering is can i just unbolt the journals and pull the whole assemble out and put it right back or do i need to leave them and pull the cam through by taking the retainer springs off and moving the arms out of the way? KiwiCowboy
The cam journals are aligned bored and in the FSM they say not to remove them. Many do and re-install them with no problems. When in doubt, follow the FSM recommendations.
PapaSmurf
Don't listen to that - the fsm lies big time here it doesn't matter. I've never ever had a problem with doing it the easy way. Hell I've even swapped cam guides from different engines after polishing the hell out of them of course Just keep them in order and lightly grease before reassembly and you'll be fine. brownclee
As long as you keep the cam towers in order and torque them down with the cam in place, you'll be fine. I even made my own 0.080" cam tower shims (0.080" aircraft grade aluminum) and replaced and torqued them with no issues. By the way, the shims were to maintain cam timing after removing 0.005" from the top and 0.075" from the bottom of the head.
