luke002
Hows it going? I have the manifolds off my car, and looking down the intake valves all of them are level except cylinder #2 valve is noticeably lower then the rest. Is this a problem? I don't want to put my manifolds back on if there is a valve problem. Also I broke off a thread tap in exhaust manifold hole closest to the radiator, I can't get it out, has anyone drilled a new whole below it to amend this? Thanks
ttodhunter
I might be way off, but is the cam pushing the valve down?
beermanpete
Having an open valve is normal. There are always a few open valves, each at a different lift depending on where the engine happens to stop. Removing broken taps is difficult. I have heard (never tried it) that the tap can be fractured by hitting it with a punch and hammer. There are tools designed for removing taps. Look here: http://www.waltontools.com/products/extractr.htm There are companies that specialize in removing broken screws and taps. Check with machine shops and auto mechanics in your area for leads. surpip
sometimes, if you where backing off from a cut, you can get a couple picks in the flutes and turn it out by hand or zip tie the picks together and turn with a screwdriver either way it sucks. luke002
Thanks. As far as the broken tap goes, I left it in there, and drilled a whole below it without problems. Since the head protrudes 1/2 inch where the manifolds bolt up, this gives you the clearance to drill just about any where the manifolds bolt up. 19762802+2
Yeah except you run the risk of hitting a water jacket which would suck and having to drill a new hole in the exhaust manifold and having sealing issues because of the new hole in the intake/exhaust gasket. Nhuwar
Taps are tool steel so there very hard. A normal drill bit wont even cut them. If you could get it cold and hit it with a punch it will break easy. Used some canned air with the can upside down so the liquid comes out. Spray it on the tap for a few minutes the give it a few good smacks. If that doesnt work you need a diamond cutter or a tap extractor. On a side note you can dissolve it with nitric acid. It wont do much to the aluminum but it will eat up the steel. This is what a lot of machine shops do when they break off a tap in non ferruos metals.
