Quick question on chain tensioner.

I am putting on a new timing chain kit on the L28 in my 240Z.

The old tensioner had a gasket behind it. The parts manuals do not even show it.

The kit did not have it either. I assume everyone reassembles without gasket?

OK, Put back together without the gasket. Front cover is going back on now.

Then I can get the oil pan back on and the car back on the ground.

With the unusual warm weather here, this is the earliest I have ever worked

on the Z.

You don't need a gasket. What gasket set are you using? I've never seen a cam chain tensioner gasket.

Mine had a thin gasket from the factory. I got to talk with a 68 year old retired

Datsun mechanic. He assured me the factory installed them but are not available

and no gasket kits had them. I checked the parts manual and he is correct.

Very strange the the factory used them new.

No one will ever see this unless you take apart a motor that has never been apart

before. And finding one of those is rare. Mine happens to be one of those.

I recently bought a gasket set here in New Zealand which is a Permaseal branded one, it had the first tensioner gasket I've ever seen it in - there's one problem though, it's not the full size of the tensioner so the oil gallery on the rear of the tensioner isn't surrounded.
